The constriction at the bases of the semilunar valves is caused by the aggregation of white fibrons tissne at this point greatly in excess of the elastic fibres fonnd in all other portions of the aorta. The function of this fibrons band is to prevent dilatation of the aortic orifice and conseqnent regurgitation of blood after the systole is complete. I have not been able to measure the amount of pressure sufficient to rnpture the aorta here, as, in the varions experiments made, the valves wonld either yield or the pressure wonld be relieved by rnpture of the artery beyond this point.' THE SECOND SEGMENT. This, the transverse portion of the aorta, varies in length from three to four inches in different subjects, and extends from near the costo-sternal articulation of the right second rib, obliquely to the left and backward, until in the neighborhood of the upper portion of the third dorsal vertebra it turns quite abrnptly downward as the descending portion.
