Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The service sector is steadily growing as services that previously were undertaken within the family unit, now show up in social accounts as health care, education and public sector services. Technological changes make possible a process of intermediation in service activities, a separation in space or time of the recipient of services from the original producer, and the increase of v̀alue-added' services. This conference met to discuss implications of the growing service sector, with the larger goal of identifying frameworks for policies to support an efficient and expanding system for production and exchange of services domestically and internationally.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Technopoles - planned centres for the promotion for high- technology industry - have become a key feature of national economic development worldwide. Created out of a technological revolution, the formation of the global economy and the emergence of a new form of economic production and management, they constitute the mines and foundries of the information age, redefining the conditions and processes of local and regional development. This book is the first systematic survey of technopoles in all manifestations: science parks, science cities, national technopoles and technobelt programmes. Detailed case studies, ranging from the Silicon Valley to Siberia and from the M4 Corridor to Taiwan, relate how global technopoles have developed, what each is striving to achieve and how well it is succeeding. Technopoles of the World distills the lessons learnt from the successes and failures, embracing a host of disparate concepts and a few myths, and offering guidelines for national, regional and local planners and developers worldwide.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cities such as New York, Tokyo and London are the centres of transnational corporate headquarters, of international finance, transnational institutions, and telecommunications. They are the dominant loci in the contemporary world economy, and the influence of a relatively small number of cities within world affairs has been a feature of the shift from an international to a more global economy which took place during the 1970s and 1980s. This book brings together the leading researchers in the field to write seventeen original essays which cover both the theoretical and practical issues involved. They examine the nature of world cities, and their demands as special places in need of specific urban policies; the relationship between world cities within global networks of economic flows; and the relationship between world city research and world-systems analysis and other theoretical frameworks.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using international examples, leading scholars present the first critical analysis of cluster theory, assessing the cluster notion and drawing out, not only its undoubted strengths and attractions, but also its weaknesses and limitations. Over the past decade the ‘cluster model’ has been seized on as a tool for promoting competitiveness, innovation and growth on local, regional and national scales. However, despite its popularity there is much about it that is problematic, and in some respects the rush to employ ‘cluster ideas’ has run ahead of many fundamental conceptual, theoretical and empirical questions. Addressing key questions on the nature, use and effectiveness of cluster models, Clusters and Regional Development provides the missing thorough theoretical and empirical evaluation.

Book excerpt: The study of quality of urban life involves both an objective approach to analysis using spatially aggregated secondary data and a subjective approach using unit record survey data whereby people provide subjective evaluations of QOL domains. This book provides a comprehensive overview of theoretical perspectives on QOUL and methodological approaches to research design to investigate QOUL and measure QOL dimensions. It incorporates empirical investigations into QOUL in a range of cities across the world.

Book excerpt: Regional economics – an established discipline for several decades – has undergone a period of rapid change in the last ten years resulting in the emergence of several new perspectives. At the same time the methodology of regional economics has also experienced some surprising developments. This fully revised and updated Handbook brings together contributions looking at new pathways in regional economics, written by many well-known international scholars. The aim is to present the most cutting-edge theories explaining regional growth and local development. The authors highlight the recent advances in theories, the normative potentialities of these theories and the cross-fertilization of ideas between regional and mainstream economists. It will be an essential source of reference and information for both scholars and students in the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The motivation for this book comes from the apparent inability of existing orthodox location theory to throw light on a series of location-production problems which are typically faced by modem manufacturing and distribution ftrms. These problems are related to the treatment of time by ftrms, who normally view time costs in terms of inventory costs. From this perspective, traditional industrial location and linkage analysis can be re-cast in a form in which space time problems can be dealt with in a unifted manner. The role played by input factor prices and market prices in location behaviour becomes dependent on the relationship between the frequency of shipment and the distance of shipment. This approach provides new insights into the relationship between the optimal location of the ftrm and the value-added by the ftrm, under conditions of either ftxed or varying local factor prices. The approach can then also be extended to discuss the of the spatial changes involved in the new Just-In-Time (JIT) production question philosophy. I would like to acknowledge the many helpful discussions I have had with Bernard Fingleton, Masahisa Fujita, Geoff Hewings, John McCombie, Ron Miller, John Parr, Tony E. Smith, and my colleagues at the University of Reading.
