This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Papers of the British School at Rome, Vol. 3 The publication of a third volume of 'Papers' by the British School at Rome may fairly be taken as evidence of its continued activity and usefulness. The first paper contains a further instalment of the valuable work which the Assistant-Director, Mr. Ashby, is doing for the recovery of the lost history of the Campagna Romana. In this department of study Mr. Ashby has won for himself a well-deserved reputation as an indefatigable explorer, and a scrupulously accurate observer. It may be added in proof of the estimation in which Mr. Ashby is held by foreign scholars, and also of the friendly relations existing between the British School and the other foreign schools in Rome, that some of his shorter papers have been published by the French School in their Melanges. The papers by Mr. Stuart Jones and Mr. Wace are both of them valuable contributions to the study of a subject which has only recently received its due share of attention, the growth and development of Roman historical sculpture. Of especial importance are Mr. Stuart-Jones's arguments in favour of assigning the Borghese reliefs to the time of Trajan, and Mr. Wace's claim to have discovered in the Lateran and Vatican Museums fragments of reliefs belonging to the time of Domitian, which help to fill a gap in our knowledge of the development of Roman historical reliefs. This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Papers of the British School at Rome, Vol. 1 The title of this volume sufficiently indicates its character. The two monographs which it contains are the first fruits of the work done by the newly founded British School at Rome, and the hope of the Committee is that they will be followed in due course by many other similar papers, and will form a series not unworthy to be compared with the Mélanges of the French School at Rome. Of the two papers, that by the Director on S. Maria Antiqua will no doubt be found the most interesting by the majority of readers, but Mr. Ashby's possesses an importance of its own as a contribution to the task of reconstructing the Roman Campagna as it was before desolation and silence fell upon it. Book Synopsis A History of British Baking by : Emma Kay
Download or read book A History of British Baking written by Emma Kay and published by Pen and Sword History. This book was released on 2020-11-23 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A cultural and social history of Britain’s breads, cakes, and pastries through the ages, from the author of Dining with the Victorians. The Great British Baking Show and its spinoffs are a modern-day phenomenon, but the British, of course, have been baking for centuries—and here, for the first time, is a comprehensive account of how Britain’s relationship with this much-loved art has changed, evolved, and progressed over time. Renowned food historian Emma Kay skillfully combines the related histories of Britain’s economy, innovation, technology, health, and cultural and social trends with the personal stories of many of the individuals involved with the whole process: the early pioneers, the recipe writers, the cooks, the entrepreneurs. From pies to puddings, medieval ovens to modern-day mass consumption, the result is a deliciously fascinating read.

Download or read book Spartacus written by Aldo Schiavone and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2013-03-05 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spartacus (109?–71 bce), the slave who rebelled against Rome, has been a source of endless fascination, the subject of myth-making in his own time, and of movie-making in ours. Hard facts about the man have always yielded to romanticized tales and mystifications. In this riveting, compact account, Aldo Schiavone rescues Spartacus from the murky regions of legend and brings him squarely into the arena of serious history. Schiavone transports us to Italy of the first century bce, where the pervasive institution of slavery dominates all aspects of Roman life. In this historic landscape, carefully reconstructed by the author, we encounter Spartacus, who is enslaved after deserting from the Roman army to avoid fighting against his native Thrace. Imprisoned in Capua and trained as a gladiator, he leads an uprising that will shake the empire to its foundations. While the grandeur of the Spartacus story has always been apparent, its political significance has been less clear. What were his ambitions? Often depicted as the leader of a class rebellion that was fierce in intent but ragtag in makeup and organization, Spartacus emerges here in a very different light: the commander of an army whose aim was to incite Italy to revolt against Rome and to strike at the very heart of the imperial system. Surprising, persuasive, and highly original, Spartacus challenges the lore and illuminates the reality of a figure whose achievements, and whose ultimate defeat, are more extraordinary and moving than the fictions we make from them.
