Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited book is the first major review of what has been achieved in Borneo Studies to date. Chapters in this book situate research on Borneo within the general disciplinary fields of the social sciences, with the weight of attention devoted to anthropological research and related fields such as development studies, gender studies, environmental studies, social policy studies and cultural studies. Some of the chapters in this book are extended versions of presentations at the Borneo Research Council’s international conference hosted by Universiti Brunei Darussalam in June 2012 and a Borneo Studies workshop organised in Brunei in 2012. The volume examines some of the major debates and controversies in Borneo Studies, including those which have served to connect post-war research on Borneo to wider scholarship. It also assesses some of the more recent contributions and interests of locally based researchers in universities and other institutions in Borneo itself. The major strength of the book is the inclusion of a substantial amount of research undertaken by scholars working and teaching within the Southeast Asian region. In particular there is an examination of research materials published in the vernacular, notably the outpouring of work published in Indonesian by the Institut Dayakologi in Pontianak. In doing so, the book also addresses the urgent matters which have not received the attention they deserve, specifically subjects, themes and issues that have already been covered but require further contemplation, elaboration and research, and the scope for disciplinary and multidisciplinary collaboration in Borneo Studies. The book is a valuable resource and reference work for students and researchers interested in social science scholarship on Borneo, and for those with wider interests in Indonesia and Malaysia, and in the Southeast Asian region.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: North Borneo Sourcebook seeks to address the lack of available data for the languages of northern Borneo, where forty to fifty distinct languages are spoken in the Malaysian state of Sabah alone. While members of the Summer Institute of Linguistics (SIL) have worked in Sabah for several decades and have published articles on individual languages, until now no comprehensive survey of the languages of Sabah had yet been done. In addition to the languages native to Sabah, also included in this monograph are closely related Southwest Sabah languages spoken in neighboring parts of the Malaysian state of Sarawak, the Indonesian province of Kalimantan Utara, and Brunei Darussalam. The author has included 594 entries with equivalents in each of the forty-six languages that represent the linguistic variation in north Borneo, along with introductory sections listing the personal pronouns, demonstrative pronouns, and case markers for each language. This sourcebook thus fills a critical need in surveying the languages of a single large area in an island of Southeast Asia. Many language communities in this region are endangered and likely to disappear as functioning entities within the next generation or two; this book may be the only record we will ever have of their existence. Linguists and those with an interest in Austronesian languages will appreciate the breadth and detail that illuminate the linguistic scene in an area where before there had been only pinpoints of light.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents a new publishing venture in terms of its range of concerns with regard to English in Southeast Asia. The chapters in the volume reflect the interests and themes of the annual Conferences on English in Southeast Asia held since 1996 among participating universities from nine countries: Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, Philippines, Australia, Hong Kong, Thailand Indonesia and New Zealand. This is believed to be the first time that such diversity and coverage has been published in a single volume. The three sections of the book cover topics which have been consistently discussed at the conferences during the last ten years. The Varieties section features chapters on phonology, dictionary making, syntax, code-switching and the communicative strategies of English speakers from ASEAN countries. The Literacies section focuses on ICT in English language teaching, Information literacy, bilingual and multilingual issues in Southeast Asia, recent developments in English language teaching and education in Thailand and questions of heritage and identity with respect to English in Malaysia. In the Literatures section the concerns are with new generation writings in English in Malaysia, the literature read by young Filipinos, the use of English in Malaysian newspapers in the context of general elections, the discourses of Asian English newspapers in relation to notions like “globalisation” and “global English” and ASEAN English on Internet websites. As a collection of work by experienced academics engaged in the issues germane to the roles and status of English in Southeast Asia this volume is an excellent resource for university students, university teaching and research staff and university library collections.
