Book excerpt: The definitive career guide for grad students, adjuncts, post-docs and anyone else eager to get tenure or turn their Ph.D. into their ideal job Each year tens of thousands of students will, after years of hard work and enormous amounts of money, earn their Ph.D. And each year only a small percentage of them will land a job that justifies and rewards their investment. For every comfortably tenured professor or well-paid former academic, there are countless underpaid and overworked adjuncts, and many more who simply give up in frustration. Those who do make it share an important asset that separates them from the pack: they have a plan. They understand exactly what they need to do to set themselves up for success. They know what really moves the needle in academic job searches, how to avoid the all-too-common mistakes that sink so many of their peers, and how to decide when to point their Ph.D. toward other, non-academic options. Karen Kelsky has made it her mission to help readers join the select few who get the most out of their Ph.D. As a former tenured professor and department head who oversaw numerous academic job searches, she knows from experience exactly what gets an academic applicant a job. And as the creator of the popular and widely respected advice site The Professor is In, she has helped countless Ph.D.’s turn themselves into stronger applicants and land their dream careers. Now, for the first time ever, Karen has poured all her best advice into a single handy guide that addresses the most important issues facing any Ph.D., including: -When, where, and what to publish -Writing a foolproof grant application -Cultivating references and crafting the perfect CV -Acing the job talk and campus interview -Avoiding the adjunct trap -Making the leap to nonacademic work, when the time is right The Professor Is In addresses all of these issues, and many more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between the area known as surface science (which mainly deals with single crystal surfaces) and the vast area of the surface properties of dispersed solids (knowledge of which is widely applied in catalysis and materials science) there is still a remarkably wide, although gradually decreasing, gap. Because fundamental physico-chemical problems are involved, this borderline area needs to be explored. With this objective, the Trieste meeting brought together specialists with a variety of origins and backgrounds, with the aim of stimulating the growth of our knowledge in this area. This proceedings volume contains ninety-three papers, comprising plenary lectures, short communications, and poster contributions on the applications of physical and theoretical methods to perfect and dispersed (microcrystalline and amorphous) metals, oxides, and mixed systems. Special emphasis is given to metal-support interfaces. The book thus provides a wealth of up-to-date information on a topic of current interest which will be of value to researchers who use chemical and/or physical methods for the study of surfaces.

Book excerpt: SECIII-Social, Ethical and Cognitive Issues of Informatics and ICT Welcome to the post-conference book of SECIII, the IFIP Open Conference on Social, Ethical and Cognitive Issues of Informatics and ICT (Information and Communication Technology) which took place from July 22-26, 2002 at the University of Dortmund, Germany, in co-operation with the German computer society (Gesellschaft flir Informatik). Unlike most international conferences, those organised within the IFIP education community are active events. This wasn't a dry academic conference - teachers, lecturers and curriculum experts, policy makers, researchers and manufacturers mingled and worked together to explore, reflect and discuss social, ethical and cognitive issues. The added value lies in what they, the participants, took away in new ideas for future research and practice, and in the new networks that were formed, both virtual and real. In addition to Keynote Addresses and Paper Presentations from international authors, there were Provocative Paper sessions, Case Studies, Focussed Debates and Creative Exchange sessions as well as professional Working Groups who debated particular themes. The Focussed Debate sessions helped to stimulate the sense of engagement among conference participants. A Market Place with follow-up Working Groups was a positive highlight and galvanised participants to produce interesting reports. These were presented to the conference on its last day. Cross-fertilisation between the papers generated some surprising and useful cross-referencing and a plethora of social, ethical and cognitive issues emerged in the discussions that followed the paper presentations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Video games have long been seen as the exclusive territory of young, heterosexual white males. In a media landscape dominated by such gamers, players who do not fit this mold, including women, people of color, and LGBT people, are often brutalized in forums and in public channels in online play. Discussion of representation of such groups in games has frequently been limited and cursory. In contrast, Gaming at the Edge builds on feminist, queer, and postcolonial theories of identity and draws on qualitative audience research methods to make sense of how representation comes to matter. In Gaming at the Edge, Adrienne Shaw argues that video game players experience race, gender, and sexuality concurrently. She asks: How do players identify with characters? How do they separate identification and interactivity? What is the role of fantasy in representation? What is the importance of understanding market logic? In addressing these questions Shaw reveals how representation comes to matter to participants and offers a perceptive consideration of the high stakes in politics of representation debates. Putting forth a framework for talking about representation, difference, and diversity in an era in which user-generated content, individualized media consumption, and the blurring of producer/consumer roles has lessened the utility of traditional models of media representation analysis, Shaw finds new insight on the edge of media consumption with the invisible, marginalized gamers who are surprising in both their numbers and their influence in mainstream gamer culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The word is out that miracles still occur, and that a major one is happening here ... 'Have you seen Bilbao?' In architectural circles, the question has acquired the status of a shibboleth. Have you seen the light? Have you seen the future?" Herbert Muschamp's future is now. What can we learn from "The Guggenheim Effect"?" "Hailed as an "instant landmark," Gehry's Bilbao Guggenheim brought a new sense of relevance to architecture in the transformation of urban landscapes. It was the story of the architect as hero and, as Greeks believed, of architecture as the first art-arche. Bilbao was doing for the Basques what the Sydney Opera House had done for Australia. Gehry, while complaining of being "geniused to death," became not only the master architect but the master artist. As a result, after Bilbao, every city has dreamed of its own Guggenheim effect. Gehry's optimistic artichoke amid Bilbao's post-industrial ruin has become an icon of what architecture can do for a city in decline. Warhol seems to be right in his prognostication that every museum should become a supermarket. Yet Hal Foster wondered, "Why all the hoopla?" Wasn't Gehry's museum risking the most problematic aspects of modernist monumentality and post-modernist faux populism?" "In this volume, artists (Fraser, Haacke, Muntadas, Sekula), architecture critics (Colomina, Gilbert-Rolfe), urban planners (Azua), art historians (Guilbaut, Guasch, Moxey, Welchman), museum specialists (Camara, Viar), art and tourism writers (Lippard, MacCannell), and anthropologists (Zulaika) discuss the various aspects of the Bilbao Guggenheim from an interdisciplinary perspective." -- Book Jacket.

Book excerpt: These papers are a selection from papers presented at the 4th International Conference on English Historical Linguistics (Amsterdam, 1985). Most studies deal with some aspect of an earlier stage of English, though present day varieties of English are also under investigation. Many of the papers show that there is a growing interest in the question why a certain change has taken place. Furthermore, the volume contains a considerable number of papers on historical syntax.
