Book Synopsis Adventures in Bookbinding by : Jeannine Stein
Download or read book Adventures in Bookbinding written by Jeannine Stein and published by Quarry Books. This book was released on 2011-06-01 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each project in this book combines bookbinding with a specific craft such as quilting, jewelry making, or polymer clay, and offer levels of expertise: basic, novice, and expert. Illustrated step-by-step instructions and photographs demonstrate how to construct the cover pages, and a unique binding technique, easy enough for a beginner to master. Each project also features two other versions with the same binding geared to those with more or less experience. The novice version is for those who have no knowledge of the craft and want shortcuts, but love the look. For the quilter's book, for example, vintage quilt pieces become the covers so all that's needing in the binding. Or if you're interested in wool felting use an old sweater. This offers great opportunities for upcycling. The expert version is for those who have a great deal of knowledge and proficiency of a certain craft - the master art quilter, for example. For this version, an expert guest artist has created the cover and the author has created the binding. This offers yet another creative opportunity - the collaborative project. Since crafters often get involved with round-robins and other shared endeavors, this will show them yet another way to combine their skills. No other craft book offers the possibilities and challenges that Adventures in Bookbinding does. Readers will return to it again and again to find inspiration and ideas.

Book excerpt: "Our most accomplished contemporary purveyor of horror fiction strikes again in Everville, a tale of worlds in conflict. . . . [Barker's] extravagantly unconventional inventions are ingenious refractions of our common quest to experience and understand the mysterious world around us and the mysteries within ourselves." — New York Times Book Review From master storyteller and New York Times bestselling author Clive Barker comes the spectacular sequel to his masterpiece of dark fantasy, The Great and Secret Show, that reveals once again the age-old battle between good and evil. On the borderland between this world and the world of Quiddity, the sea of our dreams, sits Everville. For years it has lived in ignorance of the gleaming shore on which it lies. But its ignorance is not bliss. Opening the door between worlds, Clive Barker delivers his characters into the heart of the human mystery; into a place of revelation, where the forces which have shaped our past—and are ready to destroy our future—are at work.

Book Synopsis Arts and Crafts Book Covers by : Malcolm Haslam
Download or read book Arts and Crafts Book Covers written by Malcolm Haslam and published by Richard Dennie Publication. This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before the age of the paper book jacket, publishers issued their books in cloth-covered boards, which were stamped with designs in golf leaf and color. From around 1860, artists of the Arts and Crafts movement supplied many of the best designs. Dante Gabriel Rossetti, William Morris and Walter Crane led the way, and they were followed in the 1890s by Laurence Housman, Charles Ricketts and Selwyn Image, among others. Prominent Arts and Crafts architects, such as Philip Webb and C.F.A. Voysey, also designed book covers. Malcolm Haslam explores this uncharted territory, investigating not only the designs and designers, but the publishers and binders as well. He introduces some artists, little known today, whose designs filled the bookshops and bookshelves of late Victorian and Edwardian Britain, and he shows how designers in Europe and America were influenced by British book covers decorated in the Arts and Crafts style. Ninety-nine of the best covers are illustrated and described, and details are given of over fifty Arts and Crafts designers who worked in commercial book production, and their marks and monograms are shown.

Eighteen-year-old Dara needs to find a wealthy patron in order to duel professionally and avoid a lifetime working in her parents' Fire Lantern shop. Her efforts are disrupted when her coach asks her to train with Prince Siv, an infuriating-if handsome-young man who refuses to take the sport as seriously as she does. But the prince's life may be in danger, and soon Dara will discover that Vertigon isn't as peaceful as she thought. As threats emerge from the shadows, Dara will have to raise her sword to protect Siv-if he doesn't irritate her so much that she decides to run him through herself. From the author of the Seabound Chronicles comes a new fantasy series about sword fighting, cur-dragons, molten Fire magic, and one young woman's effort to prove herself.

I am tempted to describe Petry as a magician for the many ways that The Street amazes, but this description cheapens her talent . . . Petry is a gifted artist.” — Tayari Jones, from the Introduction The Street follows the spirited Lutie Johnson, a newly single mother whose efforts to claim a share of the American Dream for herself and her young son meet frustration at every turn in 1940s Harlem. Or maybe, like me, you have the patience of a gnat and don’t want to wait six months to have a cover designed by someone else when the book is ready to go NOW. Or maybe money is tight and you’re trying to see if that book you wrote has any potential without bankrupting yourself. Or you’re ready to put that book out in print, but in your genre you know it’s not going to sell all that many print copies. Or in large print. Whatever the reason, you’re looking to design your own cover but you don’t want to go through the trial and error of figuring out a design software on your own. Well, good news, especially if you already read Affinity Publisher for Ad Creatives. This book is here to walk you through how to use Affinity Publisher to create three basic ebook covers: one with a central image, one with a side image, and one with an image that fills the entire cover. And then we’ll walk through how to take that ebook cover and turn it into a paperback for Amazon KDP and IngramSpark as well as a hard cover for IngramSpark. When you finish this book will you be able to create a book cover like the masters who charge hundreds or even thousands of dollars for their work? No. But you will be able to put together a nice, servicable cover that leverages stock photos. And sometimes that’s all you need. So let’s go. Take your self-publishing to the next level today. Please note that the print version of this book is in black and white but the ebook version has color images available if your ereader is in color. You can learn the skills you need from either version, but there are certain images in the book that are better viewed in color.
