Book excerpt: A chance encounter with an old llama astonishingly reveals a language Allen didn’t know he could speak in this captivating and one-of-a-kind middle-grade novel. Eleven-year-old Allen has a recurring nightmare, a persistent habit of humming, and difficulty connecting with other people. Making a fresh start, he and his grandmother move to a small village in northern New York. But when he meets an old llama at a winter festival, the encounter reveals a language he didn’t know he could speak and unveils repressed memories that contradict what he has long believed about his earliest years and his parents’ deaths. When the llama’s life is threatened, Allen vows to free it. Together they begin a desperate trek through a snowy wilderness, a journey on which Allen must wrestle with lies about his past while struggling against the elements to survive.

He learned how to play and mastered all the musical instruments in his high school band. He also sang with his mother in the church choir. He soon started writing gospel and inspirational songs for the church. His dad is a deacon in their church in St. Louis. Jason Skarr is the stage name for Franklin Jay Scarborough. His best friend, Marty, convinces Franklin to change his name to Jason Skarr in order to keep his parents from finding out he is a singer in a band. Franklins father wants him to be a deacon in the church and teach music in high school or in a college. Franklin wears his mothers rosary around his neck all the time. Before finishing school, both friends form the band with help from other kids in the school band, and the bands backup singers are discovered in a karaoke bar. They are hoping to be discovered by somebody and start a singing career.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sociolinguists have been pursuing connections between language and identity for several decades. But how are language and identity related in bilingualism and multilingualism? Mobilizing the most current methodology, this collection presents new research on language identity and bilingualism in three regions where Spanish coexists with other languages. The cases are Spanish-English contact in the United States, Spanish-indigenous language contact in Latin America, and Spanish-regional language contact in Spain. This is the first comparativist book to examine language and identity construction among bi- or multilingual speakers while keeping one of the languages constant. The sociolinguistic standing of Spanish varies among the three regions depending whether or not it is a language of prestige. Comparisons therefore afford a strong constructivist perspective on how linguistic ideologies affect bi/multilingual identity formation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Above Misminay, the sky also is so divided by the alternation of the two axes of the Milky Way passing through the zenith. This mirror-image quadri-partition of terrestrial and celestial spheres is such that a point within one of the quarters of the earth is related to a point within the corresponding celestial quarter. The transition between the earth and the sky occurs at the horizon, where sacred mountains are related to topographic and celestial features. Based on fieldwork in Misminay, Peru, Gary Urton details a cosmology in which the Milky Way is central. This is the first study that provides a description and analysis of the astronomical and cosmological system in a contemporary community in the Americas. Separate chapters take up the sun, the moon, meteorological phenomena, the stars, and the planets. Star-to-star constellations, the "animal" dark-cloud constellations that cut through the Milky Way, and certain twilight- and midnight-zenith stars are analyzed in terms of their spatial and temporal integration within an indigenous cosmological framework. Urton breaks new ground by demonstrating the indigenous merging of such forms of "precise knowledge" as astronomy, meteorology, agriculture, and the correlation of astronomical and biological cycles within a single calendar system. More than sixty diagrams clarify this Quechua system of astronomy and relate it to more familiar principles of Western astronomy and cosmology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Equally concerned with the lives of ordinary Andean people and sweeping historical processes, this book unveils a complex colonial world of indigenous villagers and their Spanish neighbors from the ground up and in the process examines one of the most significant indigenous uprisings in the Americas. This rebellion, known by the name of its leader, T£pac Amaru, ignited in colonial Cuzco near the former Inca capital during the late eighteenth century (1780?83) and spread rapidly throughout much of the Andes. Led by the descendant of the last Inca ruler, the rebellion severely disrupted the colonial economy and proved to be the most serious challenge to Spanish authority in Latin America since the sixteenth century. Focusing on the Cuzco provinces of Quispicanchis and Canas y Canchis, which were the wellspring of the rebellion, Ward Stavig examines the issues, values, and themes central to the lives of ordinary Andean women and men?senses of identity, conceptions of sexuality and gender, the threat of crime, the value placed on work, competition for land and its relation to cultural identity, and the impact of forced labor. Stavig interweaves an intimate and richly textured portrait of the lives of Native villagers with an analysis of economic and political colonial institutions to show not only how Native peoples in Cuzco made sense of their lives but also how their strategies of survival shaped colonial society.

Book excerpt: She wanted a simple life, and got werewolves instead. Meet Whoopsie, a somewhat sheltered young woman whose life was filled with love, laughter, and joy. She recently finished her university degree, got a job at the veterinarian’s office in her hometown, and moved into a comfy lakeside home with her best friend. Life was good. Simple. But that all changed on her twenty-fifth birthday. Her body was changing, and not in a normal, human way. Her hair and eyes had a mind of their own, and she was attracting a lot of attention from people with a strange glow to their eyes. She thought she was losing her mind, until her parents told her the truth about her family and the world around her. Shapeshifters were real, and now that she was twenty-five, the beasts were going to be coming for her. And they did… _____________ The Whoopsie Daisy series is a medium-burn paranormal romance / urban fantasy series where the main character may decide to pick more than one mate from a selection of love interests (reverse harem). It features a quirky main character who grows into her strength while surrounding herself with all sorts of shapeshifting creatures (werewolves, vampires, cat shifters, and more). ⚠️ This is not a series for children (contains content intended for mature audiences including coarse language, violence, and steamy scenes). Content notes are available on the copyright page and the authors website. This is a rewritten edition of the previously published book “Whoopsie Daisy” by C. Sunrise. ⚠️ _____________ C. Sunrise is a Canadian author who spends too much time in the great Canadian outdoors and takes way too many pictures of her dogs (and the beautiful scenery, of course). She hasn't spotted a werewolf, bear shifter, or sasquatch... yet. Until then, she'll keep adventuring and writing fictional stories about fantastical creatures. Keywords: paranormal romance, shifter romance, shape shifter romance, shape shifters, werewolf, reverse harem romance, why choose romance, strong female lead, alpha werewolf, paranormal suspense, paranormal thriller.
