Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fictional World of Javier Marías offers a fresh perspective on the narrative universe of one of Spain’s most distinguished contemporary authors. In order to establish the origin and meaning of uncertainty in his fiction, this book presents interpretations of a range of issues inherent to Marías’s canon, in particular those related to the nature of language. With the relationship between language and uncertainty at its heart, this study considers the use of foreign languages, translation, and the effect of silence through an analysis of: Todas las almas (1989), Corazón tan blanco (1992), Mañana en la batalla piensa en mí (1994) and Tu rostro mañana (2002-2007).

Book Synopsis Approaches to Teaching the Works of Miguel de Unamuno by : Luis Álvarez-Castro
Download or read book Approaches to Teaching the Works of Miguel de Unamuno written by Luis Álvarez-Castro and published by Modern Language Association. This book was released on 2020-04-01 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A central figure of Spanish culture and an author in many genres, Miguel de Unamuno (1864-1936) is less well known outside Spain. He was a surprising writer and thinker: a professor of Greek who embraced metafiction and modernist methods, a proponent of Castilian Spanish although born in the Basque Country and influenced by many international writers, and an early existentialist who was yet religious. He found himself in opposition to both King Alfonso XIII and the military dictatorship of Miguel Primo de Rivera and then became involved in the political upheaval that led to the Spanish Civil War. Part 1 of this volume, "Materials," gives information on different editions and translations of Unamuno's works, on scholarly and critical secondary sources, and on Web resources. The essays in part 2, "Approaches," offer suggestions for introducing students to the range of his works--novels, essays, poetry, and drama--in Spanish language and literature, comparative literature, religion, and philosophy classrooms.

Download or read book Galdós written by Brian J. Dendle and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-12-14 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sheer volume of prolific Spanish novelist and playwright Benito Pérez Galdós's literary production has rendered overall assessment of his body of work all but impossible. The later volumes in his ambitious and popular Episodios nacionales series, in particular, have suffered from scholarly indifference. In this acclaimed study, Brian J. Dendle closely considers the twenty-six novels in this series written between 1898 and 1912. These episodios, Dendle contests, are artistically superior to the earlier volumes and offer a unique opportunity to establish the ideological profile of the mature Galdós.
Book Synopsis Discovery of El Greco by : Eric Storm
Download or read book Discovery of El Greco written by Eric Storm and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2016-05-24 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in Dutch and translated to Spanish for the fourth centenary celebration of the death of El Greco in 2014, this book is a comprehensive study of the rediscovery of El Greco -- seen as one of the most important events of its kind in art history. The Nationalization of Culture versus the Rise of Modern Art analyses how changes in artistic taste in the second half of the nineteenth century caused a profound revision of the place of El Greco in the artistic canon. As a result, El Greco was transformed from an extravagant outsider and a secondary painter into the founder of the Spanish School and one of the principle predecessors of modern art, increasingly related to that of the Impressionists -- due primarily to the German critic Julius Meier-Graefe's influential History of Modern Art (1914). This shift in artistic preference has been attributed to the rise of modern art but Eric Storm, a cultural historian, shows that in the case of El Greco nationalist motives were even more important. This study examines the work of painters, art critics, writers, scholars and philosophers from France, Germany and Spain, and the role of exhibitions, auctions, monuments and commemorations. Paintings and associated anecdotes are discussed, and historical debates such as El Greco's supposed astigmatism are addressed in a highly readable and engaging style. This book will be of interest to both specialists and the interested art public.

Book Synopsis Manuel Machado by : Gordon Brotherston
Download or read book Manuel Machado written by Gordon Brotherston and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-06-03 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A biographical and critical study of the Spanish poet Manuel Machado (1874-1947), who was highly thought of in his lifetime but who, since his death, declined in popularity. His brother, Antonio, whom he once overshadowed, became more widely read. The first half of the book is biographical, setting Machado against the general literary background in Spain, and estimating his debt to French influence. Dr Brotherston deals in some detail with the Modernista movement, so that the study is almost an account of Spanish literary life of the time. The second half of the book is critical; Dr Brotherston wishes to show the fine quality of certain poems, and to affirm Machado's real importance and distinction. The generous bibliography will be useful to readers closely concerned with Machado and his period.

Book Synopsis Historical Dictionary of Modern Spain, 1700-1988 by : Robert W. Kern
Download or read book Historical Dictionary of Modern Spain, 1700-1988 written by Robert W. Kern and published by Greenwood. This book was released on 1990-02-21 with total page 736 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new reference work on Spain could serve as a model for other historical dictionaries. Among its winning features are the fact that it treats a topic on which there has not been a single general reference work in this century and that it has an experienced editor who is a noted scholar in his own right, a first-rate cast of international contributors, a judicious choice of entries, a consistent style, a superior bibliography and a good index. Reference Books Bulletin Historians face a number of challenges in interpreting the complexities of modern Spanish history. With few authoritative works available in the field, the Historical Dictionary of Modern Spain, 1700-1988 fills the need for a comprehensive reference and summarizes the work of a new generation of Spanish research. It is unique in its wealth of detail from the eighteenth century to the late twentieth and in offering, on some topics, the only thorough discussion available in English. Kern has included six major areas of Spanish history in this volume: political, governmental, diplomatic, institutional, cultural, social, and military. Several maps, illustrations and tables enhance the entries prepared by some seventy scholars from the United States, Canada, Britain, Spain, and Latin America. From the War of Spanish Succession to the role of Juan Carlos, the Dictionary features the latest historiographic interpretations and data. The alphabetical listings are cross-referenced to related topics and a timeline is provided to establish basic chronology. The bibliography includes the more important works on the period since 1700.

This book was released on 2018-11-02 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What drove the horizontal spread of authoritarianism and corporatism between Europe and Latin America in the 20th century? What processes of transnational diffusion were in motion and from where to where? In what type of ‘critical junctures’ were they adopted and why did corporatism largely transcend the cultural background of its origins? What was the role of intellectual-politicians in the process? This book will tackle these issues by adopting a transnational and comparative research design encompassing a wide range of countries.
