Book excerpt: "Marzano concisely and effectively shows how his three domains of learning and the New Taxonomy can be operationalized for teachers and administrators. This book integrates objectives, instructional approaches, and assessment options so that these critical aspects of teaching are aligned to promote student learning." —James McMillan, Professor and Chair, Foundations of Education Virginia Commonwealth University A hands-on guide for applying the New Taxonomy to develop meaningful and targeted educational objectives and assessments. Translating mandated standards into concrete objectives and then creating appropriate tasks to assess student learning of those objectives can be a challenge for educators. This practical resource provides a step-by-step process that shows readers how to make designing educational objectives and creating appropriate assessment tasks a part of their day-to-day practice. The book explores objectives and tasks for each of the six levels of mental processing—retrieval, comprehension, analysis, knowledge utilization, metacognition, and self-system thinking—and features: Benchmark statements that provide a starting point for the process Step-by-step models, helpful diagrams, and useful charts Numerous detailed examples from multiple subject areas and grade levels Application of the taxonomy′s three domains of knowledge: information, mental procedures, and psychomotor procedures Comprehensive and profound, this resource is essential for teachers, school and district administrators, curriculum directors, and assessment specialists seeking to apply standards to curriculum and instruction for measurable results.

Book excerpt: The IT challenge: to reinvent itself IT operations stand at a critical juncture. IT organizations must define their identity, their role, and the contribution they will make to the accelerating pace of technology commoditization. In this visionary volume, Lior Arussy offers a revolutionary thesis— IT must become a manager responsible for a product, and that product is information. To remain a key player, IT must transform itself from a producer of information to a manager of information utilization. It must drive innovation from a user-centric perspective, abandoning the process-centered focus of the past. It must nurture the imagination of the user and the process of innovation throughout the organization. Only in this way can IT connect to the core of the business, discarding its obsolete role as a cost center to become a revenue and growth driver. Mr. Arussy defines a vision for new leadership—a CI2O, Chief Information to Innovation Officer. His user-centric agenda creates a thought-provoking, challenging, and invigorating view of IT tomorrow, motivated by the restless awareness that dawn has already broken.

Book excerpt: It is now widely recognized that the effective management of knowledge assets is a key requirement for securing competitive advantage in the emerging information economy. Yet the physical and institutional differences between tangible assets and knowledge assets remain poorly understood. In the case of knowledge, the ownership and control of assets are becoming ever more separate, a phenomenon that is actually exacerbated by the phenomenon of learning. If we are to meet the challenges of the information economy, then we need a new approach to property rights based on a deeper theoretical understanding of knowledge assets. Max Boisot writes clearly and in accessible language providing some of the key building blocks which are needed for a theory of knowledge assets. He develops a powerful conceptual framework, the Information-Space or I-Space, for exploring the way knowledge flows within and between organizations. This framework will enable managers and students to explore and understand how knowledge and information assets differ from physical assets, and how to deal with them at a strategic level within their organizations.
