Such a person might ask questions like, Where will they grow? How do I grow them? Are they good to eat? How are they used? What are their names? These questions and more are answered here."--Préface

Book excerpt: The tropical plant family Pandanaceae comprises three genera, Freycinetia, Pandanus and Sararanga. One-hundred and fourteen genera and 226 species of fungi were found on dead leaves of Pandanaceae collected in Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Fiji, Hawaii, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Mauritius, Nepal, New Zealand, Niue, Philippines, Seychelles, Vanuatu and Vietnam. Taxonomic issues within each fungus genus are discussed and reference made to preceding work. All species are written up with bibliographic details, relevant measurements of the current specimens, known habitat and distribution, collection details, and a discussion on taxonomic conclusions. New taxa (4 genera, 35 species) are fully described and illustrated, each with a plate showing relevant macro- and microscopic details. Keys and/or synoptic tables are provided to all species in 28 genera. In addition, details on almost 700 species of fungi described and recorded worldwide from the Pandanaceae are listed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings the remote and little known island of Rapa firmly to the forefront of Polynesian archaeology. Thirteen authors contribute 14 chapters, covering not only the basic archaeology of coastal sites, rock shelters, and fortifications, but faunal remains, agricultural development, and marine exploitation. The results, presented within a chronology framed by Bayesian analysis, are set against a background of ethnohistory and ethnology. Highly unusual in tropical Polynesian archaeology are descriptions of artefacts of perishable material. Taking the High Ground provides important insights into how a group of Polynesian settlers adapted to an isolated and in some ways restrictive environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Baskets in Polynesia provides an overview of baskets made throughout central Polynesia from the time of early European contact to the present, observing and comparing regional similarities and differences over the course of two hundred years. Wendy Arbeit has collected and augmented much scattered data. The handsome studio photographs complement the text and show the basic techniques involved in the creation of the baskets, while field photographs show baskets in use. Tables present succinct summaries of regional basket types and the great variety of coconut frond baskets. Once baskets played an integral part in everyday life in Polynesia. Baskets are still made today, but their role has altered dramatically as a result of changing lifestyles in the island cultures. Most baskets are now created by older women, and knowledge of the techniques of plaiting is in peril of being lost altogether. Documentation of basketry in Polynesia has been uneven and for some island groups totally lacking. With this important book, Arbeit remedies this situation. This attractive and informative work will appeal to readers with an interest in Polynesia and to artisans in ethnic crafts.

Book excerpt: 4e de couv.: The small, scattered islands of the Cook group - the only islands in the Pacific to bear the name of the famous eighteenth century navigator - occupy a central position in both Pacific geography and Polynesian art. Unfortunately, little of the material culture which Captain Cook might have seen in these islands survives today. Yet those artects which are preserved in museums clearly indicate the exisstence prior to European contact of a rich artistic tradition and a remarkable level of crafsmanship in a variety of materials: stone, shell, ivory, wood, leaf and feathers. The peak of Cook Islands art is woodcarving, characterised by a sophisticated repertoire of sculptural forms, elaborate carved and painted decoration and superb finish. The author describes the range and diversity of Cook Islands art, including both ceremonial and functional objects. The materials employed, the processes of manufacture and the function of the objects within the context of traditional island society are outlined. Today Cook Islands life is changing rapidly, but the skills of the past are still alive, needing only a little encouragement to flourish as before.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Many of the papers in this volume present new and innovative research into the processes of maritime colonisation, processes that affect archaeological contexts from islands to continents. Others shift focus from process to the archaeology of maritime places from the Bering to the Torres Straits, providing highly detailed discussions of how living by and with the sea is woven into all elements of human life from subsistence to trade and to ritual. Of equal importance are more abstract discussions of islands as natural places refashioned by human occupation, either through the introduction of new organisms or new systems of production and consumption. These transformation stories gain further texture (and variety) through close examinations of some of the more significant consequences of colonisation and migration, particularly the creation of new cultural identities. A final set of papers explores the ways in which the techniques of archaelogical sciences have provided insights into the fauna of the islands and the human history of such places."--Provided by publisher.
