Yet I am aware that, where notions of impartiality, of patriotism, and of disinterestedness are as various as they are today, my own interpretation of these qualities may not be acceptable to all my readers. I can only ask that presumption of honesty and. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1915, Pan-Americanism is a penetrating analysis of the emerging political and economic power of the United States in the early 20th century. Author Roland Greene Usher argues that the growing influence of America in the Western Hemisphere will ultimately lead to a conflict with European powers, particularly Germany. With insights that remain relevant today, Pan-Americanism is a must-read for anyone interested in American foreign policy. Book excerpt: Roland Greene Usher (1880-1957/1967) was an American author. He was professor of history at Washington University, St. Louis. He was a transplanted East Coast American who traced his family's roots in the United States back to 1638 and the Pilgrim Fathers. During and immediately after World War I, he published several books on international relations, all of them urging that the United States could not continue to follow policies of aloofness from world affairs but must in the future play a far more active role. His works include: Pan-Germanism (1913), The Rise of the American People (1914), Pan-Americanism: A Forecast of the Inevitable Clash Between the United States and Europe's Victor (1915), The Pilgrims and Their History (1918) and The Story of the Great War (1919).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines how Asianism became a key concept in mainstream political discourse between China and Japan and how it was used both domestically and internationally in the contest for political hegemony. It argues that, from the early 1910s to the early 1930s, this contest changed Chinese and Japanese perceptions of ‘Asia’, from a concept that was foreign-referential, foreign-imposed, peripheral, and mostly negative and denied (in Japan) or largely ignored (in China) to one that was self-referential, self-defined, central, and widely affirmed and embraced. As an ism, Asianism elevated ‘Asia’ as a geographical concept with culturalist-racialist implications to the status of a full-blown political principle and encouraged its proposal and discussion vis-à-vis other political doctrines of the time, such as nationalism, internationalism, and imperialism. By the mid-1920s, a great variety of conceptions of Asianism had emerged in the transnational discourse between Japan and China. Terminologically and conceptually, they not only paved the way for the appropriation of ‘Asia’ discourse by Japanese imperialism from the early 1930s onwards but also facilitated the embrace of Sino-centric conceptions of Asianism by Chinese politicians and collaborators.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the centennial of the First World War rapidly approaching, historian and bibliographer James T. Controvich offers in The United States in World War I: A Bibliographic Guide the most comprehensive, up-to-date reference bibliography yet published. Organized by subject, this bibliography includes the full range of sources: vintage publications of the time, books, pamphlets, periodical titles, theses, dissertations, and archival sources held by federal and state organizations, as well as those in public and private hands, including historical societies and museums. As Controvich’s bibliographic accounting makes clear, there were many facets of World War I that remain virtually unknown to this day. Throughout, Controvich’s bibliography tracks the primary sources that tell each of these stories—and many others besides—during this tense period in American history. Each entry lists the author, title, place of publication, publisher, date of publication, and page count as well as descriptive information concerning illustrations, plates, ports, maps, diagrams, and plans. The armed forces section carries additional information on rosters, awards, citations, and killed and wounded in action lists. The United States in World War I: A Bibliographic Guide is an ideal research tool for students and scholars of World War I and American history.
