Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alfred Russel Wallace is most known for his contributions to the theory of evolution by natural selection. He is a British explorer, naturalist, and scientist. His extensive travels to remote parts of the world, particularly the Amazon rainforest, are especially well-known. In his book "Palm Trees of the Amazon and Their Uses," Wallace provides a full explanation of the many different types of palm trees that can be found in the Amazon rainforest as well as how the people utilize them. He details the many resources that the palms provide, such as food, shelter, medicine, and other essentials for surviving in the jungle. The social and cultural practices of the indigenous people who rely on these palm trees are also discussed by Wallace. He also talks about the financial potential of these palms and their importance in the global trade of other goods. Throughout the whole book, Wallace emphasizes the need of preserving the Amazon rainforest and its diversity of plant and animal life. He calls attention to the dreadful consequences that deforestation and resource exploitation may have on the environment and the lives of indigenous people who depend on it. The book "Palm Trees of the Amazon and Their Uses" adds a lot to our knowledge of the Amazon rainforest and the value it has for both the locals and the rest of the world.

Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1853 edition. Excerpt: ... PLATE V. Leopoldinia Major, n. sp. Jara assu, Linyoa Geral. The Jara assu or "greater Jara" closely resembles the last species, but it is considerably larger. The stem is four inches in diameter and reaches thirty feet in height. It is often much thicker at the bottom than in the upper part, and has a greater proportion of the stem bare. The leaves are very similar, but the spadices are larger, and the fruit is also larger and much more abundant. This tree occurs plentifully on the lakes and inlets of the upper Rio Negro, but is not found at the mouth of the river like the last species. It grows too at a lower level, being often found with a part of the stem under water. The Indians collect the fruit in large quantities, and by burning and washing extract a floury substance, which they use as a substitute for salt when they cannot procure that article. They assert positively that the smaller species of Jara will not yield the same product; but perhaps this may be only because the fruit is less abundant, and they do not take the trouble to collect it. Coarse Portugal salt is used in the Rio Negro, and among the Indians in the upper part of the river serves as a circulating medium, about a pound of it being reckoned equivalent to a day's work. The supply however is very uncertain, and there are many distant tribes which it scarcely ever reaches; and it is among them that the substitute is manufactured from the fruit of the Jara. It is doubtful, however, whether it contains any true salt, for it is described as being more bitter than saline in taste; yet with this alone to season their fish and cassava the Indians enjoy almost perfect health. Perhaps, therefore, mineral salt may not be such a necessary of life as we are accustomed to...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This early work by Alfred Russel Wallace was originally published in 1853 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. 'Palm Trees of the Amazon and their Uses' is an article detailing Wallace's observations during his travels in South America. Alfred Russel Wallace was born on 8th January 1823 in the village of Llanbadoc, in Monmouthshire, Wales. Wallace was inspired by the travelling naturalists of the day and decided to begin his exploration career collecting specimens in the Amazon rainforest. He explored the Rio Negra for four years, making notes on the peoples and languages he encountered as well as the geography, flora, and fauna. While travelling, Wallace refined his thoughts about evolution and in 1858 he outlined his theory of natural selection in an article he sent to Charles Darwin. Wallace made a huge contribution to the natural sciences and he will continue to be remembered as one of the key figures in the development of evolutionary theory.

Several of the species here figured are new, and among them is the Palm which produces the piassaba, the coarse fibrous material of which brooms for street-sweeping are now generally made. Palms are a prominent feature of many landscapes in Amazonia, and they are important culturally, economically, and for a variety of ecological roles they play. Humans have been reorganizing the biological furniture in the region since the first hunters and gatherers arrived over 20,000 years ago.
