In the focus have been reactions of nickel and cobalt and herein especially their carbonyls. Also industrial processes have been developed. When the technical oxidation of ethylene with palladium chloride had been discovered, and a great number oflaboratory reactions, many groups have turned towards this subject. Apart from two important industrial processes - acetaldehyde and vinylacetate from ethylene - a great number of conversions and catalytic reactions with palladium compounds have been researched. Their mechanisms have been cleared up and have con tributed to a better understanding of the complex chemistry of palladium. Last but not least these reactions have also served for more understanding of organic transition metal compounds and catalyses in general. Numerous conventional reactions appear today in a different light. The effects of co-

The book demonstrates that it is a highly dynamic research field. This methodology has emerged as a powerful tool for the efficient and chemoselective synthesis of heterocyclic molecules. In the past few years, several strategies have been pointed out to pursue more efficient, sustainable, and environment friendly chemical processes. Among those strategies, catalysis and the design of new processes that avoid the use of toxic reagents have been the focus of intense research.

Book excerpt: The field of organometallic chemistry has emerged over the last twenty-five years or so to become one of the most important areas of chemistry, and there are no signs of abatement in the intense current interest in the subject, particularly in terms of its proven and potential application in catalytic reactions involving hydrocarbons. The development of the organometallic/ catalysis area has resulted in no small way from many contributions from researchers investigating palladium systems. Even to the well-initiated, there seems a bewildering and diverse variety of organic reactions that are promoted by palladium(II) salts and complexes. Such homogeneous reactions include oxidative and nonoxidative coupling of substrates such as olefins, dienes, acetylenes, and aromatics; and various isomerization, disproportionation, hydrogenation, dehydrogenation, car bonylation and decarbonylation reactions, as well as reactions involving formation of bonds between carbon and halogen, nitrogen, sulfur, and silicon. The books by Peter M. Maitlis - The Organic Chemistry of Palladium, Volumes I, II, Academic Press, 1971 - serve to classify and identify the wide variety of reactions, and access to the vast literature is available through these volumes and more recent reviews, including those of J. Tsuji [Accounts Chem. Res. , 6, 8 (1973); Adv. in Organometal. , 17, 141 (1979)], R. F. Heck [Adv. in Catat. , 26, 323 (1977)], and ones by Henry [Accounts Chem. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Integrates solid-phase organic synthesis with palladium chemistry The Wiley Series on Solid-Phase Organic Syntheses keeps researchers current with major accomplishments in solid-phase organic synthesis, providing full experimental details. Following the validated, tested, and proven experimental procedures, readers can easily perform a broad range of complex syntheses needed for their own experiments and industrial applications. The series is conveniently organized into themed volumes according to the specific type of synthesis. This second volume in the series focuses on palladium chemistry in solid-phase synthesis, exploring palladium catalysts and reactions, procedures for preparation and utilization, ligands, and linker reactions. The first part of the volume offers a comprehensive overview of the field. Next, the chapters are organized into three parts: Part Two: Palladium-Mediated Solid-Phase Organic Syntheses Part Three: Immobilized Catalysts and Ligands Part Four: Palladium-Mediated Multifunctional Cleavage Each chapter is written by one or more leading international experts in palladium chemistry. Their contributions reflect a thorough examination and review of the current literature as well as their own first-hand laboratory experience. References at the end of each chapter serve as a gateway to the field's literature. The introduction of palladium-mediated, cross-coupling reactions more than thirty years ago revolutionized the science of carbon-carbon bond formation. It has now become a cornerstone of today's synthetic organic chemistry laboratory. With this volume, researchers in organic and medicinal chemistry have access to a single resource that explains the fundamentals of palladium chemistry in solid-phase synthesis and sets forth clear, step-by-step instructions for conducting their own syntheses.

Handbook of Palladium Catalysed Organic Reactions provides a synoptic description of the main types of reactions which are catalyzed by Palladium and the mechanism which causes these reactions. Each reaction is presented in graphical form and classified according to the type of transformation involved. Other books covering the use of Palladium complexes as catalysts have been written, but the Handbook is the only to offer a synoptic view, showing the catalytic cycle of each reaction. This complete coverage provides the reader with a good understanding of the parameters involved. The tables included can be viewed from the point of view of the reagents, the product of the reaction, or the mechanism involved. The Handbook is a companion to the Database of Palladium Chemistry: Reactions andCatalytic Cycles, published on CD-ROM. Begins with explicit instructions from the authors, facilitating use of the Handbook Details the associated catalytic cycle for each class of reactions Offers a choice of references, allowing the reader to find the closest example for solving a given problem 84 types of mechanism covered, plus over 2500 references Presents graphical abstracts for all reactions described, making it easy to search a type of reaction Comb-bound for easy reference Free demo disk included for the Database of Palladium Chemistry A versatile tool for chemists in the academic community, this handbook will be an invaluable tool in the laboratory

Book excerpt: Perspectives in Organopalladium Chemistry for the 21st Century is a monograph on modern organopalladium chemistry, with an emphasis on the use of palladium in organic synthesis. The collection of articles is reprinted from a special issue of the Journal of Organometallic Chemistry. The field of organopalladium chemistry is evolving rapidly, building on a growing catalogue of reactions that employ palladium-containing catalysts. This book should hold particular interest for those who apply palladium reagents and catalysts to organic synthesis; in fact, palladium is considered by many to be the most useful transition element employed for organic syntheses. This selection of articles by leading scientists, published as "Perspectives in Organopalladium Chemistry for the 21st Century", provides an impressive overview of the field that every chemist who works with organometallic palladium catalysts should read.

Book excerpt: The Organic Chemistry of Palladium, Volume I1: Catalytic Reactions deals with organic transformations resulting from palladium complexes either stoichiometrically or catalytically. One feature of a reaction catalyzed by transition metals is the absence of evidence for the typical reactive intermediates of organic chemistry, carbanions, and carbonium ions. This lack of evidence is due to the metal acting both as a source and a sink of electrons that result in energetically unfavorable ionic intermediaries. The book explains that palladium (II) can induce C-O bond formation. These reactions involve oxidation of the organic substrate and reduces the Pd(II) to metal, and are not catalytic. Industrial applications can re-oxidize the palladium metal back to Pd(II) in situ, making the reactions catalytic. The text also discusses certain reactions that can form C-O bonds as part of an oxidative process. The book also describes significant reactions that can be catalyzed by palladium metal, such as in the hydrogenation of multiple bonds, in the carbonylation of certain olefins and acetylenes, and in the catalytic cracking of high molecular weight hydrocarbons. Organic chemists, analytical chemists, investigators, and scientists whose works involve physical or inorganic chemistry will find the book truly useful.
