Book Synopsis Paleoanthropology of the Balkans and Anatolia by : Katerina Harvati
Download or read book Paleoanthropology of the Balkans and Anatolia written by Katerina Harvati and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-01-18 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume systematically reviews the evidence for early human presence in one of the most relevant geographic regions of Europe - the Balkans and Anatolia, an area that has been crucial in shaping the course of human evolution in Europe, but whose paleoanthropological record is poorly known. The primary aim of this book is to showcase new paleoanthropological (human paleontological and paleolithic) research conducted in the region. The volume is organized into three sections. The first one deals with the human fossil record from Greece, the Central Balkans, Croatia, Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey. The second section presents the paleolithic record of the same countries. In the third part, the authors provide a synthesis of current paleoenvironmental evidence for the Balkans. Chapters summarize and systematize the available human fossil evidence, examine their context, and place them within the framework of our understanding of human evolution in Europe and beyond, as well as present new analyses of existing human fossils. This book will be of interest to professionals, upper undergraduate and graduate students in paleoanthropology, human paleontology and paleolithic archaeology and in a variety of related fields, including human variation and adaptation, paleontology and biogeography. It will also be appropriate as a reference book for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses on human evolution and European paleoanthropology.

Book Synopsis A Life in Balkan Archaeology by : John Chapman
Download or read book A Life in Balkan Archaeology written by John Chapman and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2021-12-31 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This lively memoir tells the story of a boy growing up in Plymouth, Devon, getting excited about archaeology after visits to mainland Greece and Crete, trying to get into Greek archaeology and relocating northwards into the Balkans, where he spent a career in prehistoric research. The chapters alternate between museum/university experiences and the author's major research projects. The experiences of working in that part of the world as the Third Balkan War was starting were dramatic. The memoir presents stories with implications for East–West relationships which will soon disappear from living memory. The ways that research projects originated and developed are also strongly featured. There is also a fund of anecdotes about prehistorians living and dead. The publication of this memoir records those fragments of the discipline’s history which are in danger of being lost forever. But Chapman's life story is not erased from this account, which is not an anthropological work but, rather, a participant account with a modicum of relevant personal details. This memoir provides the insider story to the research results.

Book Synopsis Balkan Prehistory by : Douglass W. Bailey
Download or read book Balkan Prehistory written by Douglass W. Bailey and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-09-11 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Douglass Bailey's volume fills the huge gap that existed for a comprehensive synthesis, in English, of the archaeology of the Balkans between 6,500 and 2,000 BC; much research on the prehistory of Eastern Europe was inaccessible to a western audience before now, because of linguistic barriers. Bailey argues against traditional interpretations of the period, which focus on the origins of agriculture and animal breeding. He demonstrates that this was a period when monumental social and material changes occurred in the lives of the people in this region, with new technologies and ways of displaying identity. Balkan Prehistory will be required reading for everyone studying the Neolithic, Copper and early Bronze Ages of Eastern Europe.

Book Synopsis Beyond Use-Wear Traces by : Sylvie Beyries
Download or read book Beyond Use-Wear Traces written by Sylvie Beyries and published by . This book was released on 2021-04-23 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together 30 papers by leading scholars in the field of usewear and residue analysis. This publication aims to revive the debate on the role of traceology (use-wear and residues) in multidisciplinary approaches that address archaeological questions. Many studies on technological aspects of material culture deal with specific material categories (e.g. flint, ceramics, bone), often in separate or isolated ways, and this division does not really reflect the integrated nature of technical systems in which different material categories are in dynamic interaction. Hence, exploring the interaction between different chaînes opératoires is crucial for a more global concept of the toolkit with all its components and it is a precondition for paleo-ethnographic reconstructions of technical systems and economies. Starting from a functional perspective, the papers in this book explore various topics such as apprenticeship, group dynamics, social status, economy, technological evolution, spatial organization, mobility patterns and territories, or adaptations to cultural and environmental changes. This collection of papers, presented at the AWRANA conference in 2018, constitutes a major sign of the dynamism, popularity and scientific importance of our discipline in current archaeological research. AWRANA 2018 was dedicated to the memory of H. Keeley.
Book Synopsis Dorothy Garrod and the Progress of the Palaeolithic by : William Davies
Download or read book Dorothy Garrod and the Progress of the Palaeolithic written by William Davies and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2017-03-20 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dorothy Garrod opened many doors; not only was she the first female professor at Cambridge University, but she illuminated - and in some cases initiated - some of prehistoric archaeology's most central issues. The quiet yet self possessed woman was best known as a fieldworker, often venturing into dangerous regions such as Kurdistan. Her first and highly successful excavation revealed fragments of Neanderthal fossils in Gibralter. This volume reviews modern research on this site, as well as exploring other issues which interested the Disney Professor of Archaeology: hominid remains from Mount Carmel; Palaeolithic sites in the Zagros Mountains, Bulgaria and Britain; and the cultural evidence for the beginning of Near Eastern food production, which Garrod called Natufian. Also included are papers concerned with her life, background and published work. The topics' span and continuing relevance are testament to Dorothy Garrod's remarkable character and great achievements.
Book Synopsis Deep-Time Images in the Age of Globalization by : Oscar Moro Abadía
Download or read book Deep-Time Images in the Age of Globalization written by Oscar Moro Abadía and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2024 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zusammenfassung: This open access volume explores the impact of globalization on the contemporary study of deep-time art. The volume explores how early rock art research's Eurocentric biases have shifted with broadened global horizons to facilitate new conversations and discourses in new post-colonial realities. The book uses seven main themes to explore theoretical, methodological, ethical, and practical developments that are orienting the study of Pleistocene and Holocene arts in the age of globalization. Compiling studies as diverse as genetics, visualization, with the proliferation of increasingly sophisticated archaeological techniques, means that vast quantities of materials and techniques are now incorporated into the analysis of the world's visual cultures. Deep-Time Images in the Age of Globalization aims to promote critical reflection on the multitude of positive - and negative - impacts that globalization has wrought in rock art research. The volume brings new theoretical frameworks as well as engagement with indigenous knowledge and perspectives from art history. It highlights technical, methodological and interpretive developments, and showcases rock art characteristics from previously unknown (in the global north) geographic areas. This book provides comparative approaches on rock art globally and scrutinises the impacts of globalization on research, preservation, and management of deep-time art. This book will appeal to archaeologists, social scientists and art historians working in the field as well as lovers of rock art.
Book Synopsis Palaeolithic and Mesolithic Sailors in the Aegean and the Near East by : Adamantios Sampson
Download or read book Palaeolithic and Mesolithic Sailors in the Aegean and the Near East written by Adamantios Sampson and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-08-05 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Old theories for the origins of domesticated animals and plants from the East and the spread of farming and husbandry in Europe have affected generations of archaeologists, resulting in several theories of migrations of populations. However, there is no evidence in the archaeological record of population movements from the East, while so far the contribution of the pre-Neolithic populations of the Aegean has been neglected. This book shows that Mesolithic hunter-gatherers developed a dense maritime network on the Aegean islands and contributed to the Neolithisation process, transferring domesticated species from the East to the Aegean through Cyprus. Their great specialization in fishing and long journeys was due to a tradition that had roots in the Palaeolithic period. This text is based on practical experience from excavations and surface surveys over the past 25 years in Mesolithic and Neolithic sites in the Aegean Basin and continental Greece.
Book Synopsis Palaeolithic Europe by : Jennifer C. French
Download or read book Palaeolithic Europe written by Jennifer C. French and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-12-09 with total page 723 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Jennifer French presents a new synthesis of the archaeological, palaeoanthropological, and palaeogenetic records of the European Palaeolithic, adopting a unique demographic perspective on these first two-million years of European prehistory. Unlike prevailing narratives of demographic stasis, she emphasises the dynamism of Palaeolithic populations of both our evolutionary ancestors and members of our own species across four demographic stages, within a context of substantial Pleistocene climatic changes. Integrating evolutionary theory with a socially oriented approach to the Palaeolithic, French bridges biological and cultural factors, with a focus on women and children as the drivers of population change. She shows how, within the physiological constraints on fertility and mortality, social relationships provide the key to enduring demographic success. Through its demographic focus, French combines a 'big picture' perspective on human evolution with careful analysis of the day-to-day realities of European Palaeolithic hunter-gatherer communities—their families, their children, and their lives.
