This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2000 world leaders established the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), a set of global targets seeking to reduce poverty and promote development. The Department for International Development (DFID) has made the MDGs a central strategic objective. There has been notable progress towards reaching several Goals, including those focusing on child mortality and primary education. However, the Goals seeking improved gender equality and maternal health, amongst others, are seriously off-track. This report focuses on a UN Summit (20-22 September 2010) held to review progress achieving MDGs five years before the 2015 deadline. Achievement of the Goals depends on two factors namely it is vital that both donor and developing countries fulfil their promises - there are a number of off track goals demonstrates that much greater commitment is needed by a number of developing country governments. Secondly, multilateral organisations, notably the UN, must work as efficiently as possible to support improved health, education and other basic services in developing countries. The DFID must continue to press for better co-ordination and the amount of funding it provides should be related to success in achieving improvements. The DFID should also engage in planning for a new international framework to replace the MDGs after 2015. A review of the effectiveness of the MDGs should be carried out to assess whether this framework represents the best approach to facilitating development before a new set of targets is agreed for the post-2015 framework. This new framework shouldinclude a greater focus on: reaching the most vulnerable people and the very poorest; giving higher priority to climate change, biodiversity and the environment; and addressing population growth.

Download or read book Pakistan: Spending Needs for Reaching Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) written by Fernanda Brollo and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2021-04-29 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper assesses the additional spending required to make substantial progress towards achieving the SDGs in Pakistan. We focus on critical areas of human (education and health) and physical (electricity, roads, and water and sanitation) capital. For each sector, we document the progress to date, assess where Pakistan stands relative to its peers, highlight key challenges, and estimate the additional spending required to make substantial progress. The estimates for the additional spending are derived using the IMF SDG costing methodology. We find that to achieve the SDGs in these sectors would require additional annual spending of about 16 percent of GDP in 2030 from the public and private sectors combined.
