The selections of the first edition have been reviewed, errors have been corrected and important new editions and reprints have been noted. The second edition contains 278 names of artists not represented in the first edition.

Dublin-based designer Annie Atkins invites readers into the creative process behind her intricately designed, rigorously researched, and visually stunning graphic props. These objects may be given just a fleeting moment of screen time, but their authenticity is vital and their role is crucial: to nudge both the actors on set and the audience just that much further into the fictional world of the film.
Book Synopsis The Art and Occupation of Stage Design in Finnish Theatres by : Laura Gröndahl
Download or read book The Art and Occupation of Stage Design in Finnish Theatres written by Laura Gröndahl and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-08-01 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study explores the formation, establishment, expansion, and disintegration of stage design as a modern profession and a recognized artform in Finnish theatres. Drawing on oral or written recollections and thoughts of stage designers from different decades, the author asks how their artistic agencies, occupational identities, and theoretical self-understanding have been constituted. She analyses Finnish theatre history from new perspectives by shifting the focus from finished performances to largely unknown practices behind the scenes. This book examines the cultural institutions that have constituted the stage designers’ role and position, like the professional city theatre system, the craft union, and education. This research shows how modern and postmodern scenographic innovations have been assimilated to local contexts, and how material and cultural circumstances have reshaped the artistic practices. Without bypassing canonical trendsetters or hegemonic cultural mindsets, the focus is directed on the everyday grassroot level of stage design practices. Personal interviews with over 20 designers make visible an ample repertoire of unwritten knowledge stored in habitual ways of working and dealing creatively with the complex system of theatre making. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars in theatre and performance studies with a focus on scenography.

Book Synopsis Biełarusian Fine Art: Time and Time Again by : Zina Gimpelevich
Download or read book Biełarusian Fine Art: Time and Time Again written by Zina Gimpelevich and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It’s hard to imagine feeling a sense of loss for artwork until you become immersed in the stories of the Biełarusian fine artists Dr. Zina Gimpelevich has spotlighted in her newest book. She brought to life artists whose work was curtailed under the tyranny of the Russian Empire, the tragedy of the Holocaust, and persistent poverty. Yet these artists’ collective resilience and the work they produced—paintings, sculptures, textiles, ceramics, and more—have helped bring beauty and joy to the world, even when depicting the suffering felt by so many. In Biełarusian Fine Art: Time and Time Again, Dr. Gimpelevich celebrates the work of over 150 Biełarusian fine artists (including many from the School of Paris). She estimates more than 3,000 Biełarusian artists are creating today in Biełaruś, her birth country. Many remained in their home country. Many became émigrés who traveled beyond borders and never returned home. Native sons, such as Mark Šahał (Marc Chagall) and Markus Yakaŭlevič Rotkovič (Mark Rothko) have left their influence and work the world over and are often “claimed” by other countries. Other fine artists created in obscurity or self-imposed exile, hiding their work to avoid the grasp of oppressive regimes. Dr. Gimpelevich has ensured their names and work will not be forgotten and will receive the recognition they richly deserve. The harsh truths Dr. Gimpelevich brings to light are tempered with glimmers of hope from recent-generation Biełarusian fine artists. Like their predecessors and mentors, their work shows an unyielding reverence for their country’s landscapes, culture, history, and people. Although this book has its lens focused on Biełarusian fine art, Dr. Gimpelevich adeptly provides readers with a deeper understanding of how politics and power struggles have affected this little-known country’s citizens, many of which still endure today.

Download or read book Pop Art written by Tilman Osterwold and published by Taschen. This book was released on 2003 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ""Everything is beautiful,"" raved Andy Warhol, in raptures at the glamour of modern life, consumer society, the world of the media and its stars. And in so saying, he was expressing the feelings of a generation who felt their age was dawning, an age of ""love"" and ""freedom."" In art, too, a new attitude towards the present was making itself felt. Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg, Robert Rauschenberg, James Rosenquist, Tom Wesselmann, Richard Hamilton and many other artists were discovering Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, Coca Cola, comics, advertising, household appliances and food cans as an independent aesthetic reality. Popularity and triviality were no longer terms of abuse, but were central to a new understanding of an art whose aim was to break down the barriers between art and life. The author gives us a detailed account of the styles, themes and sources of Pop Art, investigating its development in different countries and providing biographies of its leading exponents.
