Book excerpt: When John Hardin’s brother, a priest, apparently commits suicide, he goes to his brother’s parish in Philadelphia to find out the truth of what happened. The events of the suicide are revealed to him by the pastor and by a possessed man through a series of short stories. Painted Demons presents a series of violent confrontations between people and elements they see as evil. The reader may not always agree with those judgments; where a character names evil, the reader may see justice, sickness or blind authority. But before that realization, the reader must often wait to see from which character or source the horror will come. In each case, normal people are introduced leading average lives; but their existence becomes threatened by something or someone they have previously known as sane and safe: an elevator, a city bus, a bit of trivia, a parent, a spouse. The stories always encase a vein of normalcy, Character and relationships become the backbone of each story and contrast with the fast plot, violence, and horror which develop to drive each story to its climax. Along with the horror, a main goal of the collection is the surprise of unpredictability from story to story. Most of the tales deal with the supernatural, but not all. They are split between first and third person narrators, but any story is as likely to be told from the point of view of the evil or predator as from the intended victim. Sometimes the evil wins, sometimes not. And once or twice the reader may not be sure. Some stories have no descriptions of gore, while others rip and bleed. But they are all stories about people—plain but very disparate people—caught suddenly in desperate, terrifying situations.

Renowned Buddhist leader Tsultrim Allione explains that the harder we fight our demons, the stronger they become. If we want to liberate ourselves from the fight once and for all, we must reverse our approach and nurture our demons. This powerful five-step practice forms a strategy for transforming negative emotions, relationships, fears, illnesses and self-defeating patterns. This will help you cope with the inner enemies that undermine your best intentions. By recognising your demons, giving them form and feeding them, you can free yourself from the battle. Enriched with detailed examples to show how others have transformed their demons, Feeding Your Demons will give you remarkable new insight into the forces that threaten to defeat you, along with the tools to achieve inner peace.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than thirty-five years, the Detail & Scale Series of aviation publications was considered one of the best references on military aircraft available. Focusing on the physical details of the aircraft, such as cockpits, engines, avionics and electronics, armament, landing gear, and more, each of the sixty-nine titles in the series provided the most detailed look at a wide variety of aircraft dating from World War II to the present. The “F3H Demon in Detail & Scale” continues the well-established and respected Detail & Scale format as the first digital title in this series. It covers McDonnell’s Demon, a jet fighter flown by the U. S. Navy in the 1950s and 1960s, in extensive detail. There are more than 340 photographs, and of these, more than 140 are photographs of details covering the Demon inside and out. All of the detail photos are in color, and almost all were taken specifically for this publication. The 340+ photographs are supplemented with more than 50 art profiles and illustrations, all of which were created just for this new title in the Detail & Scale Series. Every squadron to fly the Demon is covered along with information about their deployments aboard aircraft carriers of the Atlantic and Pacific Fleets. As with all books in the Detail & Scale Series, a special section is provided for scale modelers that reviews the model kits available of the Demon.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mikhail Aleksandrovich Vrubel (1856-1910) was a painter whose art has been described as a Symbolist and Proto-Expressionist. He exerted a tremendous influence on Russian avant-garde painters. After graduating from the Academy of Fine Art in St. Petersburg, Vrubel made many trips to Italy and earned his living restoring medieval art treasures. This greatly influenced Vrubel's choice of subject matter, although he was also heavily influenced by the literature of his own country, which was then in full flower. The magnificent full-colour reproductions in this book of the Russian master, whose work deserves to be far better known in the West, will be a revelation to all who are unfamiliar with his work and a delight to the enthusiast.

Book excerpt: Nowadays, linguists do not question the existence of synchronic variation, and the dichotomy between synchrony and diachrony. They recognize that synchrony can be motivated regionally (diatopic variation), sociolinguistically (diastratic variation), or stylistically (diaphasic variation). But, further, they can also recognize the hybrid nature of synchrony, which is referred to as "dynamic synchrony." This conception of synchrony assumes that similar patterns of usage can coexist in a community during a certain period and that their mutual relations are not static but conflicting enough to result in a future systematic change through symptomatic synchronic variation. Emergence of a large corpus of written texts for some languages has enabled quantitative as well as qualitative analyses of the synchronic conditions for diachronic changes, over both long and short spans of time. Most of the 14 papers in this volume represent studies on synchronic and diachronic variations based on such corpus data. For sale in all countries except Japan. This book was released on 2004 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation examines religious motifs in the decoration of Meroitic painted and stamped pottery dating from the 4th century BC to the 4th century AD. Meroitic pottery from more than 35 sites, especially cemeteries, in Upper and Lower Nubia is analysed in terms of the types of the motifs present and their frequencies, followed by an interpretation of their significance in religious terms, beyond being purely decorative features. The author identifies underlying religious symbolism in many decorative schemes, primarily taking the form of deities and representations of amulets, and a fundamental concern for fertility, life, birth, regeneration, eternity and protection in life and death.
