Book Synopsis Transportation for the Nuclear Industry by : D.G. Walton
Download or read book Transportation for the Nuclear Industry written by D.G. Walton and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The transport requirements of the nuclear industry are unique in many respects. Thi s is not because cargoes are particularly large or hazardous by compari son wi th other industries but because standards of performance required in every aspect of the activity are so much greater than those required for any other industry. Transport of nuclear materials is subject to existing statutory regulations applied not only nationally but internationally. In addition to this, users of transport demand the highest standards of performance for their own purposes particularly in the area of quality assurance. Similar considerations also apply to the transport of non-nuclear materials where the transport link often has to tie in with project management and quality assurance requirements. Safety and security of nuclear materials are of paramount importance but even when these aspects are of a completely acceptable standard public attitudes to the transport activities have to be addressed adequately. The transport system itself consists of many components. The route, the vehicles, the containers, and the individual packages. The performance of each component determines the performance of the total system: all these factors were presented in the 1988 Conference on Transportation for the Nuclear Industry, giving a broad over-view of current practice together with wide ranging consideration of future requirements and developments.
Book Synopsis Advisory Material for the IAEA Regulations for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Material by : IAEA
Download or read book Advisory Material for the IAEA Regulations for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Material written by IAEA and published by International Atomic Energy Agency. This book was released on 2022-06-13 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Safety Guide provides recommendations and guidance on achieving and demonstrating compliance with IAEA Safety Standards Series No. SSR-6 (Rev. 1), Regulations for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Material (2018 Edition), which establishes the requirements to be applied to the national and international transport of radioactive material. Transport is deemed to comprise all operations and conditions associated with and involved in the movement of radioactive material, including the design, fabrication and maintenance of packaging, and the preparation, consigning, handling, carriage, storage in transit, shipment after storage and receipt at the final destination of packages. The Advisory Material is not a stand-alone text. It is to be used concurrently as a companion to the IAEA Safety Standards Series No. SSR-6 (Rev. 1) and each paragraph of this guide is numbered correspondingly to the paragraph of the Regulations to which it most directly relates.
Download or read book Nuclear Juggernaut written by Martin Bond and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every day throughout Britain, by road, by rail and by sea, there are large numbers of routine movements of radioactive cargo. Materials at all stages of the nuclear cycle, from uranium ore to nuclear waste, from nuclear warheads to radioactive isotopes used in medicine, are constantly on the move. In normal circumstances handling low-level material exposes workers to small doses of radiation, but a serious accident could lead to widespread contamination and to the major risk of additional deaths from cancer. The accident record is not good. There are repeated small accidents and many people believe that the major accident is simply waiting to happen. This book gives a thorough account of what is moved, by wham and far what purpose. It considers the risks, including that of terrorism, the safety record and the precautions. It also highlights the perils of the secrecy surrounding the industry: for example, local councils are responsible for coping with any accident, but are not told when or where nuclear movements are taking place. Martin Bond's careful work is a large step towards order in a chaotic industry. Originally published in 1992

Book Synopsis Burying Uncertainty by : K. S. Shrader-Frechette
Download or read book Burying Uncertainty written by K. S. Shrader-Frechette and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1993-12-03 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shrader-Frechette looks at current U.S. government policy regarding the nation's high-level radioactive waste both scientifically and ethically. What should be done with our nation's high-level radioactive waste, which will remain hazardous for thousands of years? This is one of the most pressing problems faced by the nuclear power industry, and current U.S. government policy is to bury "radwastes" in specially designed deep repositories. K. S. Shrader-Frechette argues that this policy is profoundly misguided on both scientific and ethical grounds. Scientifically—because we cannot trust the precision of 10,000-year predictions that promise containment of the waste. Ethically—because geological disposal ignores the rights of present and future generations to equal treatment, due process, and free informed consent. Shrader-Frechette focuses her argument on the world's first proposed high-level radioactive waste facility at Yucca Mountain, Nevada. Analyzing a mass of technical literature, she demonstrates the weaknesses in the professional risk-assessors' arguments that claim the site is sufficiently safe for such a plan. We should postpone the question of geological disposal for at least a century and use monitored, retrievable, above-ground storage of the waste until then. Her message regarding radwaste is clear: what you can't see can hurt you.
