This book was released on 2016-10-06 with total page 694 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume seeks to identify and explore the forces affecting higher education in the Asia Pacific region today. It includes a set of conceptually-rich organizing chapters followed by detailed country-specific studies that detail both the underlying dynamics of these forces and the manner in which they have affected specific countries. In this way, the chapters touch on the complex demographics of the region, how continued and continuous economic development impinges on higher education, and how neoliberalism has affected higher education across many dimensions. The volume also addresses the complex issues associated with cross border education and the daunting challenges of both national and cross-national quality assurance.

Book Synopsis Technology Transfer and Innovation for Low-Carbon Development by : Miria Pigato
Download or read book Technology Transfer and Innovation for Low-Carbon Development written by Miria Pigato and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2020-04-09 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Technological revolutions have increased the world’s wealth unevenly and in ways that have accelerated climate change. This report argues that achieving The Paris Agreement’s objectives would require a massive transfer of existing and commercially proven low-carbon technologies (LCT) from high-income to developing countries where the bulk of future emissions is expected to occur. This mass deployment is not only a necessity but also an opportunity: Policies to deploy LCT can help countries achieve economic and other development objectives, like improving human health, in addition to reducing greenhouse gases (GHGs). Additionally, LCT deployment offers an opportunity for countries with sufficient capabilities to benefit from participation in global value chains and produce and export LCTs. Finally, the report calls for a greater international involvement in supporting the poorest countries, which have the least access to LCT and finance and the most underdeveloped physical, technological, and institutional capabilities that are essential to benefit from technology.

Book excerpt: The Pacific Northwest has its own version of the seven summits: Hood, Adams, St. Helens, Rainier, Glacier, Shuksan, and Baker, stunning peaks that crown the Cascade range. Art Wolfe captures their untamed beauty from near and far in breathtaking images that reveal high snowfields, lush old-growth forests, and the haunting blue light of glaciers. These striking photographs convey the many moods of these untamed mountains, which for many people represent the last pure and wild places on the planet. Michael Lanza's text includes fascinating little-known facts about each of the seven summits.

Book Synopsis Archaeological Perspectives on Conflict and Warfare in Australia and the Pacific by : Geoffrey Clark
Download or read book Archaeological Perspectives on Conflict and Warfare in Australia and the Pacific written by Geoffrey Clark and published by ANU Press. This book was released on 2022-03-08 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When James Boswell famously lamented the irrationality of war in 1777, he noted the universality of conflict across history and across space – even reaching what he described as the gentle and benign southern ocean nations. This volume discusses archaeological evidence of conflict from those southern oceans, from Palau and Guam, to Australia, Vanuatu and Tonga, the Marquesas, Easter Island and New Zealand. The evidence for conflict and warfare encompasses defensive earthworks on Palau, fortifications on Tonga, and intricate pa sites in New Zealand. It reports evidence of reciprocal sacrifice to appease deities in several island nations, and skirmishes and smaller scale conflicts, including in Easter Island. This volume traces aspects of colonial-era conflict in Australia and frontier battles in Vanuatu, and discusses depictions of World War II materiel in the rock art of Arnhem Land. Among the causes and motives discussed in these papers are pressure on resources, the ebb and flow of significant climate events, and the significant association of conflict with culture contact. The volume, necessarily selective, eclectic and wide-ranging, includes an incisive introduction that situates the evidence persuasively in the broader scholarship addressing the history of human warfare.
