Book Synopsis Nuclear Disarmament: Opportunities for Peace and Work for Europe and the World by : Comitato per una Civiltà dell'Amore - ODV
Download or read book Nuclear Disarmament: Opportunities for Peace and Work for Europe and the World written by Comitato per una Civiltà dell'Amore - ODV and published by Youcanprint. This book was released on 2022-11-22 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Cultural Disarmament by : Raimundo Panikkar
Download or read book Cultural Disarmament written by Raimundo Panikkar and published by Westminster John Knox Press. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world's inhabitants are clearly not only interdependent but singly unable to achieve peace. In this important and timely book, philosopher and theologian Raimon Panikkar deals with the crucial issues of our time - peace, war, religion, ecology - as he redefines true peace and offers a way to achieve it in the world. Peace, he argues, requires more than nuclear, military, or economic disarmament. Peace can ultimately be obtained only by cultural disarmament, which requires that absolutism be abandoned for true reconciliation through ongoing intercultural dialogues.
Book Synopsis Patriotic Pacifism by : Sandi E. Cooper
Download or read book Patriotic Pacifism written by Sandi E. Cooper and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1991-12-19 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the liberalized reconfiguration of civil society and political practice in nineteenth-century Europe, the right to make foreign policy, devise alliances, wage war and negotiate peace remained essentially an executive prerogative. Citizen challenges to the exercise of this power grew slowly. Drawn from the educated middle classes, peace activists maintained that Europe was a single culture despite national animosities; that Europe needed rational inter-state relationships to avoid catastrophe; and that internationalism was the logical outgrowth of the nation-state, not its subversion. In this book, Cooper explores the arguments of these "patriotic pacifists" with emphasis on the remarkable international peace movement that grew between 1889 and 1914. While the first World War revealed the limitations and dilemmas of patriotic pacifism, the shape, if not substance, of many twentieth-century international institutions was prefigured in nineteenth-century continental pacifism.

Book Synopsis The Endless Reconstruction and Modern Disasters by : Domenica Farinella
Download or read book The Endless Reconstruction and Modern Disasters written by Domenica Farinella and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-06-13 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a study on the long-lasting consequences of a disastrous earthquake that hit the city of Messina, Sicily, in 1908. The quake killed about 86,000 people, and destroyed one of the most important portal cities of the Mediterranean. The book investigates both the forces that shaped that event and made it possible – firstly, urban speculation processes at the end of the nineteenth century – and the role of that occurrence in creating a complex event that, on the one hand, accelerated trends and tendencies that were already in motion; and, on the other, produced an entirely new social space based on social separation and the raise of a widespread marginal class. Such a class developed within urban borders and spaces that, over the decades, grew according to the same logic and directions that followed the reconstruction. Especially the shacks, still a visible presence in the city, represent the lieu of reproduction both of a class and the whole of the social relations stemming from the disaster. It shows how key-concepts in contemporary scientific analysis, such as “shock economy” and “economy of disaster,” can be aptly backdated. Above all, this study broadens the normal analyses of disasters by showing the stratification of institutional techniques and economic forces that, over the decades, intervened and (re-)shaped the site of a disaster and its social structure.
