Book excerpt: Sara and Anna Olson awaken each morning without the comfort of their parents love. Orphaned at a young age, theyve tried their best to find a sense of safety and security within the foster system. At nine and eleven, they know more about the world than children twice their ageand its a knowledge they have paid dearly to earn. Inspired by true events, their story is one of survival, but its also one of friendship, sisterhood, and hope. They must find the strength to face the world with courage and faith. Amid the tattered remains of their innocence, the sisters know that no matter what else life delivers, they can always count on each other. When their ever-shifting world is rocked by three wood-splintering knocks on the door one cold, autumn night, the sisters flee into the darkness, alone and terrified. What could drive them into the frigid night air? On that night, Sara makes a promise to her sister, one she spends her whole life trying to keep. But it may be a promise that is destined to be broken.

Book excerpt: Shavelson is a physician and journalist who followed five addicts through various drug rehabilitation programs in California. Their stories, often told in their own words and punctuated by bandw photos Shavelson took as the five traversed the system and the streets, highlight the links between drug addiction, mental illness, and trauma, including child abuse. Shavelson argues for an integrated approach to drug treatment that addresses the fundamental causes of drug abuse, not just its outward symptoms and behaviors. c. Book News Inc.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deep Down Dark is the novel that inspired the film The 33 starring Lou Diamond Phillips, Cote de Pablo and Antonio Banderas. When the San José mine collapsed outside of Copiapó, Chile, in August 2010, it trapped thirty-three miners beneath thousands of feet of rock for a record-breaking sixty-nine days. After the disaster, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Héctor Tobar received exclusive access to the miners and their tales, and in Deep Down Dark, he brings them to haunting, visceral life. We learn what it was like to be imprisoned inside a mountain, understand the horror of being slowly consumed by hunger, and experience the awe of working in such a place-underground passages filled with danger and that often felt alive. A masterwork of narrative journalism and a stirring testament to the power of the human spirit, The 33: Deep Down Dark captures the profound ways in which the lives of everyone involved in the catastrophe were forever changed. Book excerpt: A superb and delicately written story, Timecrunch: the Trails of Death, is a compelling tale of the Adam family, who were wiped out in 2012. The mother, daughter and son were killed in their own house and the father, who found their bodies, put together a time capsule before killing himself. The time capsule is found seven thousand years later and the family is cloned from hairs found in the box. The family’s journey in their new world exposes them to the wonders and delights of an advanced civilisation and a genuinely caring society based on neighbourly love. The son, 20-year old Brumin fails to adapt to his new life and develops feelings of revenge for those who ended the lives of his mother, sister and himself. The plan he hatches involves mastering the cloning process so that he can reproduce multiple copies of one of the killers – a hair of whom had found its way into the time capsule – and kill them off one by one. He greatly succeeds in his plan, but is stopped while his blade hurtles down to end the life of one of his victims. In the end Brumin wants to be punished, but the manner in which society responds to his crimes is an embarrassment to the justice system of the 21st century. The story contains a number of gems, from presentations of technologies of the future, to sobering critiques of 21st century society and interesting takes on science and popular music. All-in-all a shocking story that in the end cannot fail to lift the heart, as it points to the wonderful future that must be lying ahead.

Such writing often brings expectations for a certain type of book (heartwarming, uplifting, nice). Many books give you that experience. And we like those books. They are good books. The world needs those books. This is not that book. Americans Do Their Business Abroad is a collection of stories a little too goofy, a little too personal (and maybe a little too gross) to belong anywhere else. Latrines. Goat eyeballs. Pickpockets. Whimsy. Wisdom. And arson in the name of hygiene. Enjoy.
