This book was released on 2018-04-12 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. XX.

Download or read book Secretis bene uiuere siluis written by Stratis Kyriakidis and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2024-06-25 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents essays written in honour of Robert Maltby, Emeritus Professor of Latin at the University of Leeds. It offers a rich collection of modern scholarship covering a wide range of literary genres in Latin literature, spanning from Augustan times up to the Italian Renaissance. The value of this volume lies in its inclusion of new interpretations of well-discussed texts from the past, shedding light on texts that have recently garnered scholarly attention and sparked lively discussions. Fifteen essays reflect the main areas of scholarship and interests of the honoree in a variety of Roman literary genres, with special focus on the Corpus Tibullianum, but also on etymologising and textual criticism. The collection is not exclusively intended for classicists, historical linguists, and textual critics. By providing insightful discussions and fresh interpretations of themes and issues in Latin literature from a contemporary perspective, it also appeals to anyone interested in Mediterranean studies, the socio-cultural aspects of literature, and comparative literature.

Book Synopsis Book VI of Ovid’s ›Metamorphoses‹ by : Antonio Ramírez de Verger
Download or read book Book VI of Ovid’s ›Metamorphoses‹ written by Antonio Ramírez de Verger and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-05-10 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The verse-by-verse commentary on the Ovidian text includes the reading of more than 300 manuscripts, including the so-called Heinsian manuscripts, and of almost 100 editions, from the two "editiones principes" of 1471 to the present day. The introduction describes the manuscripts used, and a history of the Ovidian editions is also traced. A new text of book VI is presented, accompanied by a slim and lucid critical apparatus. Futher information appears in the commentary and in the appendices, particularly readings of manuscripts and editions. The verbatim commentary offers, with reliable quotes for each term, the critical observations of all the editors and commentators of the Ovidian work throughout the centuries. This aspect of critical edition has been neglected by commentators of Ovid since Heinsius (1659) and Burman (1727). Two appendices ("Readings of manuscripts" and "Readings of editions") are added for the first time for readers of the Ovidian work. The volume closes with a "Select index of textual problems", a large "Index locorum" and an "Index nominum".

Book Synopsis What Catullus Wrote by : Daniel Kiss
Download or read book What Catullus Wrote written by Daniel Kiss and published by Classical Press of Wales. This book was released on 2015-06-01 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The poems of Catullus barely managed to survive the Middle Ages. All surviving copies of the collection derive from an extremely corrupt manuscript, and scholars have been working since the Renaissance to reconstruct the original text. This volume aims to contribute to this effort with a substantive Introduction, and with six original papers, from a team of noted international specialists. The papers were presented in 2011 at the conference 'What Catullus Wrote' at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitat, Munich. The authors represent different generations of scholarship and of academic tradition. They here study aspects of the manuscript tradition of the poems and their editorial history as well as contributing directly to the reconstruction of the text. The volume aims to set an example of a collaborative approach to textual criticism, in which significant choices are based not on the judgement of a single authoritative editor, but on the outcome of debate between scholars who represent a broad range of viewpoints.

Book Synopsis The Lives of Ovid in Seventeenth-Century French Culture by : Helena Taylor
Download or read book The Lives of Ovid in Seventeenth-Century French Culture written by Helena Taylor and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-04-28 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seventeenth-century France saw one of the most significant 'culture wars' Europe has ever known. Culminating in the Quarrel of the Ancients and Moderns, this was a confrontational, transitional time for the reception of the classics. Helena Taylor explores responses to the life of the ancient Roman poet, Ovid, within this charged atmosphere. To date, criticism has focused on the reception of Ovid's enormously influential work in this period, but little attention has been paid to Ovid's lives and their uses. Through close analysis of a diverse corpus, which includes prefatory Lives, novels, plays, biographical dictionaries, poetry, and memoirs, this study investigates how the figure of Ovid was used to debate literary taste and modernity and to reflect on translation practice. It shows how the narrative of Ovid's life was deployed to explore the politics and poetics of exile writing; and to question the relationship between fiction and history. In so doing, this book identifies two paradoxes: although an ancient poet, Ovid became key to the formulation of aspects of self-consciously 'modern' cultural movements; and while Ovid's work might have adorned the royal palaces of Versailles, the poetry he wrote after being exiled by the Emperor Augustus made him a figure through which to question the relationship between authority and narrative. The Lives of Ovid in Seventeenth-Century French Culture not only nuances understanding of both Ovid and life-writing in this period, but also offers a fresh perspective on classical reception: its paradoxes, uses, and quarrels.
