Although its roots lie in organic chemistry, the implications of its findings are having enormous impact in a broad range of disciplines, and we now have evidence for radical involvement in over 100 diseases. As important as this is, however, the subject of radicals and
Book Synopsis Signalling Mechanisms — from Transcription Factors to Oxidative Stress by : Lester Packer
Download or read book Signalling Mechanisms — from Transcription Factors to Oxidative Stress written by Lester Packer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Molecular Mechanisms of Transcellular Signaling: from the Membrane to the Gene" was held on the Island of Spetsai, Greece, from August 15- 27, 1994. The aim of this Institute was to bring together researchers in the field of signal transduction mechanisms, transcription factors and gene regulation with those actively involved in studies on the implications of oxygen radicals and antioxidant defence mechanisms for cell function. As diverse as these fields may be, the emergence of their interconnection during the course of the Institute was an eye-opener for students and lecturers alike. 2 Presentations and discussions focussed on the role of Ca +, G-proteins, protein kinase C and phospholipases in signaling mechanisms. These broad principles were extended to transcription factors and gene regulation with an emphasis on the steroid hormone receptor superfamily and NFKB. Basic principles of free radical formation and antioxidant action (vitamin E and C) were presented and discussed in connection with effects on signaling pathways. This book present the content of the major lectures and a selection of the most relevant posters. These proceedings offer a comprehensive account of the most important topics discussed at the Institute. The book is intended to make the proceedings accessible to a large audience.
Book Synopsis Surviving Hypoxia by : Peter W. Hochachka
Download or read book Surviving Hypoxia written by Peter W. Hochachka and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2022-11-30 with total page 587 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surviving Hypoxia: Mechanisms of Control and Adaptation is a synthesis of findings and thoughts concerning hypoxia. The thermodynamics of hypoxia are discussed in detail, including acid-base balance and self-pollution resulting from the accumulation of anaerobic end-products. The book focuses on descriptions and discussions of common facets, contrasting solutions in a variety of physiological hypoxia defense strategies, including those shown by plants, invertebrates, and vertebrates. Special treatment is given to the distinctive problems that hypoxia presents to vulnerable organs such as the kidney, liver, and brain. It also addresses pathological events in addition to protective mechanisms. Clinical implications of basic research are examined in the book, which provides new insights into underlying pathological processes occuring in hypoxic-induced organ failure and indicates new paths for successful clinical intervention. Surviving Hypoxia: Mechanisms of Control and Adaptation is an excellent reference for all researchers interested in the physiological effects of hypoxia, underlying pathological events, and protective mechanisms.

Book Synopsis Free Radical Toxicology by : Kendall B Wallace
Download or read book Free Radical Toxicology written by Kendall B Wallace and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1997-06-19 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provides insight into the involvement of free radicals in the pathogenesis of chemical-induced toxic tissue injury. The text addresses the fundamentals of free radical chemistry and the theoretical basis for electron transfer reaction leading to free radical generation. It describes the various subcellular sources of free radicals, the biological reactivity with lipid, protein and nucleic acids, and the physiochemical determinants of free radical-induced cell injury and the various antioxidant defence systems. The book focuses on target organ toxicity, and the concluding section offers an overview of the evidence implicating free radicals in the aetiology of various chemical toxicities, challenging the possibility of misguided use of biomarkers for oxidative damage.
Book Synopsis Advances in Mercury Toxicology by : Tsuguyoshi Suzuki
Download or read book Advances in Mercury Toxicology written by Tsuguyoshi Suzuki and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on an international meeting organized by the University of Tokyo and the University of Rochester, and is published as one belonging to the series of Rochester International Conferences in Environmental Toxicity. The meeting on "Advances in Mercury Toxicology" was held at the University of Tokyo on August 1 to 3, 1990. The invited papers are published in this book along with an "Overview" chapter that was written by the editors at a meeting held at the University of Rochester on August 1 to 2, 1991. The purpose of the meeting was to assemble leading scientists to discuss their most recent findings on the toxicology of mercury. The time was opportune. Considerable progress has been made on the environmental fate and toxicology of mercury. Recent findings have given new insight into the global model for mercury. Transport in the atmosphere extends great distances resulting in pollution of lakes and rivers far distant from the source of mercury release. The process of methylation leads to accumulation of methylmercury in fish and thus in the human diet. New evidence indicates that acid rain and the impoundment of water for hydroelectric purposes affects the methylation and bioaccumulation processes resulting in higher levels of methylmercury in fish.
Book Synopsis Subcellular Basis of Contractile Failure by : Borivoj Korecky
Download or read book Subcellular Basis of Contractile Failure written by Borivoj Korecky and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph contains 20 selected papers presented at the Symposium on Subcellular Basis of Contractile Failure which was held in Ottawa during May 11-13, 1989 and is designed for the benefit ofthose who were unable to attend this event. It is now increasingly becoming clear that an excessive amount of calcium is intimately involved in the pathogenesis of a wide variety of heart diseases. Accordingly, the investigations concerning the role of calcium chan nels and their regulatory mechanisms in heart function as well as of the intra cellular calcium overload in cardiac dysfunction are presented here. Since sodium is also considered to influence the cardiac contractile force by chang 2 ing the intracellular concentration of calcium through the Na +-Ca+ exchange 2 mechanism in the cell membrane, the role of Na +-Ca+ exchange in heart func tion as well as pathology of contractile failure is discussed. In view of the new ly discovered implications of the oxygen free radicals in cellular injury, papers concerning the role of these radicals in heart disease are included in this book. For the purpose of clarity, different chapters have been organized under three main headings: (I) Role of cations in heart function, (II) Cardiac hypertrophy and cardiomyopathies, and (III) Ischemic heart disease and cardiac failure.
Book Synopsis Free Radical Damage and its Control by : C.A. Rice-Evans
Download or read book Free Radical Damage and its Control written by C.A. Rice-Evans and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1994-02-09 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive treatise on the chemical and biochemical consequences of damaging free radical reactions, the implications for the pathogenesis of disease and how this might be controlled endogenously and by radical scavenging drugs. Oxidative stress may be influenced by exogenous agents of oxidative stress, radiation, trauma, drug activation, oxygen excess, or by exogenous oxidative stress which is associated with many pathological states including chronic inflammatory disorders, cardiovascular disease, injury to the central nervous system, and connective tissue damage. This and many other such aspects are presented clearly and in depth. The development of antioxidant drugs depends on the understanding of the mechanisms underlying the generation of excessive free radicals in vivo, the factors controlling their release and the site of their action. This excellent volume presents an up-to-date account of the current state of knowledge in these areas.
