Book excerpt: The fact that governments lie is generally accepted today, but World War I was the first global conflict in which millions of young men were sacrificed for hidden causes. They did not die to save civilization; they were killed for profit and in the hopes of establishing a one-world government. By 1917, America had been thrust into the war by a President who promised to stay out of the conflict. But the real power behind the war consisted of the bankers, the financiers, and the politicians, referred to, in this book, as The Secret Elite. Scouring government papers on both sides of the Atlantic, memoirs that avoided the censor's pen, speeches made in Congress and Parliament, major newspapers of the time, and other sources, Prolonging the Agony maintains that the war was deliberately and unnecessarily prolonged and that the gross lies ingrained in modern "histories" still circulate because governments refuse citizens the truth. Featured in this book are shocking accounts of the alleged Belgian "outrages," the sinking of the Lusitania, the manipulation of votes for Herbert Hoover, Lord Kitchener's death, and American and British zionists in cahoots with Rothschild's manipulated Balfour Declaration. The proof is here in a fully documented exposé—a real history of the world at war.

Download or read book Common Ground written by David Fairhall and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2006-08-25 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a small group of women set out to march to Greenham one summer day at the end of August 1981, none of them could have imagined that this outing would change their lives forever. Nor did they dream that their gesture that day would spark off a feminist protest movement that would last for decades spreading its influence across the world. This highly entertaining and evocative history of the common traces the development of the protests from the summer of that year through the climax of the Cold War to the present day. It is a quintessentially English tale in which a disparate group of dedicated and sometimes fractious women confront the full military might of the United States, not only to raise their voices against nuclear weapons but also to safeguard the ancient customs and rights of common ground. As alive to the women's concerns as to the wider political implications, Fairhall paints a vivid picture of life at Greenham, from the challenges and frustrations of the night time raids and appearances in court to the exuberant self-expression of the camps at the various rainbow-coloured Gates. More recently, he shows how the respectable residents of Newbury, where the women were often given such a hostile reception, have used the same laws exploited by the women in their own fight to restore the ancient rights of public access to the common and protect it as open heathland for future generations. The protests at Greenham Common are a powerful symbol of the 20th century which still arouse strong feelings today. There are many 'Greenham women' still around. But what did they really achieve? As public concern focuses both on the proliferation of modern weapons of mass destruction and the need to preserve the threatened British landscape, this is a timely moment to consider their legacy.

Book Synopsis William E. Wilson (1851-1908) - The Work and Family of a Westmeath Astronomer by : Ian Elliott and Charles Mollan
Download or read book William E. Wilson (1851-1908) - The Work and Family of a Westmeath Astronomer written by Ian Elliott and Charles Mollan and published by Charles Mollan. This book was released on 2018-10-11 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wilson was a wealthy gentleman who could afford to indulge his hobby of Astronomy. He was attracted to this subject when, as a teenager, he took part in the Total Eclipse Expedition to Algeria in 1870. He set up a well-equipped private Observatory at Daramona House in Streete, County Westmeath. His contributions to Astronomy included: The first fairly accurate estimate of the temperature of the Sun's visible surface; the first photo-electric measurements of the brightness of stars; a series of superb celestial photographs with a 24-inch Grubb reflector; The first use of cinematography in solar physics; One of the first to suggest that radio-activity might keep the stars shining. The book covers all these initiatives and much more. Wilson, though he never attended university, was elected to Fellowship of the (London) Royal Society and received an honorary doctorate from Dublin University. But the book covers his family and life style, with brief biographies of his contemporary scientific colleagues. The book is well illustrated with family and astronomical photographs. It is written for the 'educated layman', and no knowledge of Astronomy (or indeed science) is required.

Book Synopsis Decolonization and Conflict by : Martin Thomas
Download or read book Decolonization and Conflict written by Martin Thomas and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-06-15 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insurgency-based irregular warfare typifies armed conflict in the post-Cold War age. For some years now, western and other governments have struggled to contend with ideologically driven guerrilla movements, religiously inspired militias, and systematic targeting of civilian populations. Numerous conflicts of this type are rooted in experiences of empire breakdown. Yet few multi-empire studies of decolonisation's violence exist. Decolonization and Conflict brings together expertise on a variety of different cases to offer new perspectives on the colonial conflicts that engulfed Europe's empires after 1945. The contributors analyse multiple forms of colonial counter-insurgency from the military engagement of anti-colonial movements to the forced removal of civilian populations and the application of new doctrines of psychological warfare. Contributors to the collection also show how insurgencies, their propaganda and methods of action were inherently transnational and inter-connected. The resulting study is a vital contribution to our understanding of contested decolonization. It emphasises the global connections at work and reveals the contemporary resonances of both anti-colonial insurgencies and the means devised to counter them. It is essential reading for students and scholars of empire, decolonization, and asymmetric warfare.
