Bardoux is the first of such quasi-undergraduates to give us his impression of University life and teaching. The son of a well known senator and literary man, he brought to Oxford hereditary culture and intelligence, and an acquaintance with what is socially and intellectually best in his own University of Paris. Of an age to mix on equal terms with undergraduates, while, after the manner of his countrymen, more mature in mind than his English con temporaries, he saw much that is here, yet passes unobserved before our too accustomed eyes. For this third edition I have myself revised the whole, but have been careful to make no alterations in the chapters originally written by others, except as to matters of definite fact. One chapter, that on Women's Education in Oxford, has been entirely rewritten; this was necessary owing to the rapid developments Of the last twenty years in this department 5 I am fortunate in being able to Obtain the assistance of the leading authority on Women's Education in Oxford, Miss A. M. A. H. Rogers. As this book is largely used in America, it has seemed worth while to print in a short Appendix the main pro visions of the statutes as to Research Degrees and as to Colonial-and Foreign Students. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mirror of Oxford Within the past few years so much has written, and excellently written, about Oxford and its colleges, by minor historians, that another new book on the same subject may well expect to be challenged to give the raison detre of its existence. Much indeed has been written, but it has all been written to harmonise with the Protestant tradition. In the otherwise admirable guides to Oxford already existing, this is conspicuously the case. Wherever questions arise regarding the religious storm which burst over the University in the sixteenth century, statements are made, and inferences drawn, which in the light of present knowledge can no longer be sustained. Much, too, is said which to the adherents of the old religion is needlessly offensive: and on the other hand much that is deeply interesting to them is left untold. Now that religious disabilities are removed, and all the privileges of Oxford life are once again open to Catholic students, the time seems opportune for providing Catholic visitors with a story of the University written by a sympathetic hand. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Impressions of Oxford DO you remember, dear companion of past days so long passed already, do you remember our walks through the arden of the Luxemburg ten years ago is-iappy time when, under the pretence of prepar ing for our examinations we talked of literature, amongst the marble statues in which lives again the remembrance of princesses long since gone! The statues themselves were very ordinary pieces of sculpture, but the names of the queens inscribed on the pedestals made us dream -vaguely. There floated before us on the afternoon air of the spring-time and autumn, the hope of a life so noble and so pure. Our great joy then was to dis cuss art, our worst grief the thought of the uncertainty of the truths of meta physics and religion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Key to the Popery of Oxford IN drawing attention to the subject matter of the present publi cation, the Author feels himself called upon to add a few lines by way of Introduction, not as requiring any apology for the step he now takes, but as an explanation due to those who may not have seen his former pamphlet, to which this is intended as another Appendix. Circumstances connected with the former, being rather peculiar in their nature, may better serve the end the Author has 1n view by being related than suppressed, as they will prove, when examined into, that the object aimed at wast an honest and simple desire to have the subject under dis cussion taken up by such only as had the power, talents, piety, and experience, requisite for such an enterprize. Ever since the year 1833, the state of things 1n respect to religious truth in Oxford, had been becoming gradually mme decided in its cha racte1, and no step was taken by any one to remedy the growing evil. In the sprmg of last yea1, the Author gave notice of an intention to bring the subject. Before the public, having adver tised nearly th1ee months p1evious to its issumg from the press. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Oxford Even as it is, I have been unavoidably compelled to save space by omitting much that I had written and practically all my refer ences and acknowledgments. Yet, where one has gathered so much honey from other men's flowers not to acknowledge the debt in detail appears discourteous and ungrateful; and not to give chapter and verse jars also upon the historical conscience. I can only say that, very gratefully, J'az' prir 772072 bien oz} je l'ai trozwe', whether in the forty odd volumes of the Oxford His torical Society, the twenty volumes of the College Histories, the accurate and erudite monographs of Dr Rashdall (mediaeval Universities and Sir Henry Maxwell Lyte (history of the University of Oxford to the year or innumerable other works. Where so much has been so well done by others in the way of dealing with periods and sections of my whole subject, my chief business has been to read, mark, digest, and then to arrange my story. But to do that thoroughly has been no light task. Whether it be well done or ill-done, the story now told has the great merit of providing an occasion, excuse was never needed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Paradox of Oxford It is commonly agreed that no other city in Great Britain lays so potent a spell on the visitor as Oxford. The gardens of the sister university along the Cam may catch the charm of an English summer more entrancingly; Edinburgh, with her crown of hills, and her cavernous wynds, may be more picturesque; London, with her pride of empire, her spoils of art, her web of human triumphs and despair, may be more appalling to the imagination; but there is something in the aspect of the crowded, cloistered colleges of Oxford that penetrates more deeply into the mind of the observer and leaves him not quite the same man as before. Such at least was my experience last summer when I visited the town for the first time. "There is an air about it resonant of joy and hope: it speaks with a thousand tongues to the heart; it waves its mighty shadow over the imagination: ...its streets are paved with the names of learning that can never wear out: its green quadrangles breathe the silence of thought, conscious of the weight of yearnings innumerable after the past, of loftiest aspirations for the future." It was this feeling of the intellectual hopes and moral ideas of many generations of men here made visible in stone, rather than what has been called the "almost despairing sense of loveliness," that stirred me profoundly as I walked from court to court in the expressive silence of the long vacation. It was a feeling good and salutary for the heart. Yet in the end the impression left upon me was curiously mixed. I was elated and teased at the same time; my spirits were, so to speak, both enlarged and contracted. In part this was due, no doubt, to the manifest incongruities of the town itself as it has developed in these latter years. If it be a novel there are countless pitfalls to entrap the author - points small and inconsequent to the reader who cannot proudly claim the City of Spires as his Alma Mater, but irritating beyond description to the man who knows and loves Oxford. When we recall Oxford, we picture immediately a low lying city of wide streets and stately build ings, venerable and mellow with age, and in most cases mercifully preserved from the improving hands of successive generations. To say that the history of Oxford is the history Of its University is not correct, for the town was 'a place of some importance long before it became a centre Of learning. Its strategic position made it so. Rude I9. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An American at Oxford At a superficial glance the testator's intention seems to have been to send the students to Oxford directly from American schools. Such a course, it seems to me, could only work harm. Even if the educational and residential facilities afforded at Oxford were on the whole superior to those of American universities, which they are not, the dif-1 ference could not compensate the student for the loss of his American university course with all it means in forming lifelong friendships among his countrymen and in assimilating the national spirit. If, however, the Oxford scholarships were awarded to recent graduates of American universities, the greatest advantage might result. The student might then modify his native training so as to complete it and make it more effective. Now the wording of the testament requires only that the American scholars shall commence residence as undergraduates. This they will be able to do whatever their previous training, and in fact this is what Americans at Oxford have always done in the past. The most valuable A. B. Leaves the field.
