Book Synopsis Ovid, Heroides: A Selection by : Christina Tsaknaki
Download or read book Ovid, Heroides: A Selection written by Christina Tsaknaki and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-03-25 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the OCR-endorsed publication from Bloomsbury for the Latin A-Level (Group 4) prescription of Ovid's Heroides, giving full Latin text, commentary and vocabulary for Heroides I lines 1–68, and Heroides VII lines 1–140, with a detailed introduction that also covers the prescribed text to be read in English. Ovid's Heroides is a unique collection of poetry, in which famous mythological heroines write letters to the men who have abandoned them. They offer a new perspective on the otherwise male-centred mythological tradition. Heroides I (from Penelope) and VII (from Dido) respond to the most famous Classical epics, Homer's Odyssey and Virgil's Aeneid, by presenting a new, less positive, angle on the two famous epic heroes. Through his heroines' unique voices, Ovid plays with literary tradition, inviting us all to take a side: epic heroism or loyalty in love? Resources are available on the Companion Website.

Book Synopsis Incerti auctoris Epistula Sapphus ad Phaonem by : Ovid
Download or read book Incerti auctoris Epistula Sapphus ad Phaonem written by Ovid and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ovid's Heroides, a collection of twenty-one epistles in elegiac verse, consists of two groups, the first comprising fourteen poems addressed by heroines of mythology to their absent lovers or husbands. In this edition, Professor Knox offers a commentary on seven of these epistles, addressing problems of language and style, and focusing on the relationship of the Heroides to the classic works of Greek and Roman literature on which Ovid bases his representation of these women. In addition, he has included a commentary on the Epistula Sapphus, a separate poem of doubtful authorship which was composed in the manner of Ovid and is believed by many to be by him. The Introduction provides an account of the genre, a survey of language, style and metre, and an outline of the problems concerning the authenticity of parts of the collection.

Book excerpt: This is the OCR-endorsed publication from Bloomsbury for the Latin A-Level (Group 4) prescription of Ovid's Heroides, giving full Latin text, commentary and vocabulary for Heroides VI, lines 1–100 and 127–64, and X, lines 1–76 and 119–50. A detailed introduction covers the prescribed text to be read in English, placing the poems in their Roman literary context. The heroines of the Heroides are women in love who can do nothing but write sad verse letters to their faithless lovers across the sea. They tell their stories and express their feelings in poetry of great power and psychological subtlety. Hypsipyle (in VI) and Ariadne (in X) are feminists before feminism, royal ladies who are slaves to their passion – these women are given a voice by Ovid in poetry which is at once simple and sophisticated, heartfelt and yet also full of irony and literary resonance.

Download or read book Heroides written by Ovid and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2004-11-25 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the twenty-one poems of the Heroides, Ovid gave voice to the heroines and heroes of epic and myth. These deeply moving literary epistles reveal the happiness and torment of love, as the writers tell of their pain at separation, forgiveness of infidelity or anger at betrayal. The faithful Penelope wonders at the suspiciously long absence of Ulysses, while Dido bitterly reproaches Aeneas for too eagerly leaving her bed to follow his destiny, and Sappho - the only historical figure portrayed here - describes her passion for the cruelly rejecting Phaon. In the poetic letters between Paris and Helen the lovers seem oblivious to the tragedy prophesied for them, while in another exchange the youthful Leander asserts his foolhardy eagerness to risk his life to be with his beloved Hero.

Book Synopsis The Ovidian Heroine as Author by : Laurel Fulkerson
Download or read book The Ovidian Heroine as Author written by Laurel Fulkerson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-07-14 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ovid's Heroides, a catalogue of letters by women who have been deserted, has too frequently been examined as merely a lament. In a new departure, this book portrays the women of the Heroides as a community of authors. Combining close readings of the texts and their mythological backgrounds with critical methods, the book argues that the points of similarity between the different letters of the Heroides, so often derided by modern critics, represent a brilliant exploitation of intratextuality, in which the Ovidian heroine self-consciously fashions herself as an alluding author influenced by what she has read within the Heroides. Far from being naive and impotent victims, therefore, the heroines are remarkably astute, if not always successful, at adapting textual strategies that they perceive as useful for attaining their own ends. With this new approach Professor Fulkerson shows that the Heroides articulate a fictional poetic, mirroring contemporary practices of poetic composition.
Book Synopsis Ovid's Heroidos by : Howard Jacobson
Download or read book Ovid's Heroidos written by Howard Jacobson and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-08 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A series of letters purportedly written by Penelope, Dido, Medea, and other heroines to their lovers, the Heroides represents Ovid's initial attempt to revitalize myth as a subject for literature. In this book, Howard Jacobson examines the first fifteen elegaic letters of the Heroides. In his critical evaluation, Professor Jacobson takes into consideration the twofold nature of the work: its existence as a single entity with uniform poetic structure and coherent goals, and its existence as a collection of fifteen individual poems. Thus, fifteen chapters are devoted to a thorough analysis and interpretation of the particular poems, while six additional chapters are concerned with problems that pertain to the work as a whole, such as the nature of the genre, the role of rhetoric, theme, and variation, and the originality of Ovid. Special attention is given to the application of modern psychological criticism to the delineations of the pathological psyche in the letters. In an additional chapter on the chronology of Ovid's early amatory poetry, the author challenges and revises the traditional dating of the Heroides. Originally published in 1974. Download or read book Ovid: Heroides XVI-XXI written by Ovid and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1996-03-21 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is Ovid's wittily imagined version of the letters exchanged by three famous pairs of lovers. Heroides XVI-XXI constitute an artfully constructed triptych: Hero and Leander's tragedy of high romance and fleeting happiness framed by two ironic comedies, that of Paris and Helen distinctly black, that of Acontius and Cydippe ending the book on a note of tantalising ambiguity. This is the first edition of these poems with commentary in any language since 1898. It provides a substantially improved text, together with all the guidance needed by students for the understanding of Ovid's Latin and the appreciation of his poetic art. The Introduction offers the first adequate discussion ever published of the poet's treatment of his literary sources and models, and deals succinctly but decisively with the question of authorship.
