Book excerpt: Scott Prudham investigates a region that has in recent years seen more environmental conflict than perhaps anywhere else in the country--the old-growth forests of the Pacific Northwest. Prudham employs a political economic approach to explain the social and economic conflicts arising from the timber industry's presence in the region. As well, he provides a thorough accounting of the timber industry itself, tracing its motivations, practices, and labor relations.

Book excerpt: Avalanche dynamics equations are used to estimate flow heights, velocities, specific thrust pressure, maximum specific weight of avalanche debris, and runout distance for 12 avalanche case studies from the Colorado Rocky Mountains. Suggestions are made for using this engineering approach for avalanche zoning and land use planning.

Download or read book Forest Entomology and Pathology written by Jeremy D. Allison and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-06-30 with total page 810 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book will provide an introduction to forest entomology, the principles and techniques of forest insect pest management, the different forest insect guilds/feeding groups, and relevant forest insect pest management case studies. In addition to covering 30% of the earth, forest ecosystems provide numerous timber and non-timber products that affect our daily lives and recreational opportunities, habitat for diverse animal communities, watershed protection, play critical roles in the water cycle, and mitigate soil erosion and global warming. In addition to being the most abundant organisms in forest ecosystems, insects perform numerous functions in forests, many of which are beneficial and critical to forest health. Conversely, some insects damage and/or kill trees and reduce the capacity of forests to provide desired ecosystem services. The target audience of this book is upper-level undergraduate and graduate students and professionals interested in forest health and entomology.

Download or read book BEHAVE written by Patricia L. Andrews and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the third publication describWilding the BEHAVE system of computer programs for predicting behavior of wildland fires. This publication adds the following predictive capabilities: distance firebrands are lofted ahead of a wind-driven surface fire, probabilities of firebrands igniting spot fires, scorch height of trees, and percentage of tree mortality. The system includes a separate module for graphing moisture content of fine, dead fuels. Basic assumptions, limitations, and application of the prediction models are discussed. Previous publications in the BEHAVE series are BEHAVE: fire behavior prediction and fuel modeling system-FUEL subsystem (Burgan and Rothermel 1984), and BEHAVE: fire behavior prediction and fuel modeling system-BURN subsystem, Part 1 (Andrews 1986).
