Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The post-Cold War situation has given way to a new and unprecedented constellation of global interrelations. The power constellation today is not only multi-polar, but rather, ‘chaotic’: its configuration keeps shifting and it is determined not simply by new emerging super powers, but also by any seemingly small events in non-linear modes of interaction. The interdependency between communities somehow makes significant changes unpredictable. Such an interdependent, yet chaotic, world order, in turn, raises new philosophical questions. Identity, culture and civilization cannot be understood anymore simply in terms of traditional categories. These categories are called into question through mutual interrogation and mutual enlargement of horizons, and this inevitably entails hybridization and pluralization. The Asian voices included in this book speak of recognition of and respect for the ‘otherness’, the other outside as well as inside. The writers mostly see globalization as well as their own cultural positions through dialogical imagination in which a Western philosophical framework is deployed to find out their Asian positions, and the reverse, the Asian reality is used to problematize the Western framework. Thereby this book attempts to shed light on the question of how we are to understand culture and civilization.

Book excerpt: Voices Found: Free Jazz and Singing contributes to a wave of voice studies scholarship with the first book-length study of free jazz voice. It pieces together a history of free jazz voice that spans from sound poetry and scat in the 1950s to the more recent wave of free jazz choirs. The author traces the developments and offers a theory, derived from interviews with many of the most important singers in the history of free jazz voice, of how listeners have experienced and evaluated the often unconventional vocal sounds these vocalists employed. This theory explains that even audiences willing to enjoy harsh sounds from saxophones or guitars often resist when voices make sounds that audiences understand as not-human. Experimental poetry and scat were combined and transformed in free jazz spaces in the 1960s and 1970s by vocalists like Yoko Ono (in solo work and her work with Ornette Coleman and John Stevens), Jeanne Lee (in her solo work and her work with Archie Shepp and Gunter Hampel), Leon Thomas (in his solo work as well as his work with Pharoah Sanders and Carlos Santana), and Phil Minton and Maggie Nicols (who devoted much of their energy to creating unaccompanied free jazz vocal music). By studying free jazz voice we can learn important lessons about what we expect from the voice and what happens when those expectations are violated. This book doesn't only trace histories of free jazz voice, it makes an attempt to understand why this story hasn't been told before, with an impressive breadth of scope in terms of the artists covered, drawing on research from the US, Canada, Wales, Scotland, France, The Netherlands, and Japan.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Hymns for the Fallen, Todd Decker listens closely to forty years of Hollywood combat films produced after Vietnam. Ever a noisy genre, post-Vietnam war films have deployed music and sound to place the audience in the midst of battle and to provoke reflection on the experience of combat. Considering landmark movies—such as Apocalypse Now, Saving Private Ryan, The Thin Red Line, Black Hawk Down, The Hurt Locker, and American Sniper—as well as lesser-known films, Decker shows how the domain of sound, an experientially rich and culturally resonant aspect of cinema, not only invokes the realities of war, but also shapes the American audience’s engagement with soldiers and veterans as flesh-and-blood representatives of the nation. Hymns for the Fallen explores all three elements of film sound—dialogue, sound effects, music—and considers how expressive and formal choices in the soundtrack have turned the serious war film into a patriotic ritual enacted in the commercial space of the cinema.

Adnon Collier constructed a massive container ship to house his extensive collection of interstellar alien transports, yachts, and battleships. Intentionally shaped to aid the biosphere of a blue-water world, Adnon's moon ship resembles a naturally-occurring planetary body in space. Aboard this massive container are hotels and services to help a fleeing civilization. The Lucien, bowing to an ancient prophecy that becomes reality, flee the volcanic destruction of their homeworld. This moon is one avenue of escape for a people struggling to save their lives. Adnon Collier is neither a saint nor sinner, but he will get involved. The Dora are an honorable people, and that honor will be testing along the path to the new world.

Book excerpt: A deaf artist and former orphan finds the twin sister she never knew she had in this “gripping, entertaining” novel of family bonds and self-discovery (Cathy Lamb, author of Henry’s Sisters). A proudly deaf artist living in Philadelphia, Lacey Gears is exactly where she wants to be. At twenty-eight years old, she rarely thinks about her difficult childhood in a home for disabled orphans. That is, until she receives a shocking letter that begins, “You have a sister. A twin to be exact . . .” When Lacey learns that her hearing twin, Monica, experienced the normal childhood she was denied, she angrily sets out to find Monica and her biological parents. But the truth about Monica's life and the reason for the twins’ separation is far from simple. And every answer Lacey discovers only raises more questions. “At once a story about love and loss, family and friends, the world of the hearing and that of the deaf, My Sister’s Voice satisfies on many levels.” —Holly Chamberlin, author of The Family Beach House

Book excerpt: This is Volume Two of Imaginal Reality, a work that has been described as "The finest book on contemporary existential magic I've ever read" (George Holochwost, Magus (1), Illuminates of Thanateros).Readers will dive deeper into the imagination of magic and learn to develop the fictional gaze necessary to claim authority and authorship of their lives. This second volume contains an extensive glossary of over 300 scholarly entries on esotericism, existentialism, psychology, and the magical revival. This volume moves more explicitly into the practice of magic - that is, the ongoing journey of claiming our lives more fully and deeply. This cultivation of intentionality and vision, though never a one-time decisive victory, can become a more habitual attitude. To gird these hard-fought realizations, this volume presents the other four voids - Nothingness, Meaninglessness, Freedom and Responsibility, and Change and Finitude - in detail.

Book excerpt: In Aboriginal and Māori literature, the circle and the spiral are the symbolic metaphors for a never-ending journey of discovery and rediscovery. The journey itself, with its indigenous perspectives and sense of orientation, is the most significant act of cultural recuperation. The present study outlines the fields of indigenous writing in Australia and New Zealand in the crucial period between the mid-1980s and the early 1990s - particularly eventful years in which postcolonial theory attempted to 'centre the margins' and indigenous writers were keen to escape the particular centering offered in search of other positions more in tune with their creative sensibilities. Indigenous writing relinquished its narrative preference for social realism in favour of traversing old territory in new spiritual ways; roots converted into routes. Standard postcolonial readings of indigenous texts often overwrite the 'difference' they seek to locate because critical orthodoxy predetermines what 'difference' can be. Critical evaluations still tend to eclipse the ontological grounds of Aboriginal and Māori traditions and specific ways of moving through and behaving in cultural landscapes and social contexts. Hence the corrective applied in Circles and Spirals - to look for locally and culturally specific tracks and traces that lead in other directions than those catalogued by postcolonial convention. This agenda is pursued by means of searching enquiries into the historical, anthropological, political and cultural determinants of the present state of Aboriginal and Māori writing (principally fiction). Independent yet interrelated exemplary analyses of works by Keri Hulme and Patricia Grace and Mudrooroo and Sam Watson (Australia) provided the 'thick description' that illuminates the author's central theses, with comparative side-glances at Witi Ihimaera, Heretaunga Pat Baker and Alan Duff (New Zealand) and Archie Weller and Sally Morgan (Australia).
