Download or read book Overdue written by Amanda Oliver and published by Chicago Review Press. This book was released on 2022-03-22 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "One part love letter, one part eulogy, Overdue tells the story of America's public library system . . . Amanda Oliver proves herself a vibrant new literary voice . . . This is a book for all book lovers." —Reza Aslan, author of Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth When Amanda Oliver began work as a school librarian, fueled by a lifelong love of books and a desire to help, she felt qualified for the job. What she learned was that librarians are expected to serve as mediators and mental-health-crisis support professionals, customer service reps and administrators of overdose treatment, fierce loyalists to institutionalized mythology and enforced silence, and arms of state surveillance. Based on firsthand experiences from six years of professional work as a librarian in high-poverty neighborhoods of Washington, DC, as well as interviews and research, Overdue begins with Oliver's first day at Northwest One, the DC Public Library branch where she would ultimately end her library career. Through her experience at this branch, Oliver highlights the national problems that have existed in libraries since they were founded, troublingly at odds with the common romanticization of the library as a shining beacon of equality: racism, segregation, and economic oppression. These fundamental American problems manifest today as police violence, the opioid epidemic, widespread inaccessibility of affordable housing, and a lack of mental health care nationwide—all of which come to a head in public library spaces. Can public librarians continue to play the many roles they are tasked with? Can American society sustain one of its most noble institutions? Libraries will not save us, but Oliver helps us imagine what might be possible if we stop expecting them to.

Download or read book My Overdue Book written by Peter Bright and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-04-30 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My Overdue Book: Too many stories not to tell: spells out the varied episodes in the life of a man who spent decades working in Hollywood. He began as a little boy in Cincinnati impressed early on by the broadcasting magic of radio and then TV in the middle of twentieth century America. His drive to get into broadcasting culminates in an early success that gets interrupted by an unexpected sidebar in The US Army and a subsequent tour as an Infantryman in Vietnam in the late 1960's. His yearlong excursion in "Fun City East," with its repeated life and death experiences, had lifelong effects on this soldier-of-media. Following his wanderings through the jungles of Vietnam, Bright's interactions with many of America's top public figures throughout his decades in radio and television come to life with intriguing stories that are personal, professional, positive and negative. It's life without a filter! Readers across generations will share and co-experience numerous real life feelings and emotions with writer Bright as his winding trail of life opens in front of them. book endorsement for peter bright; i always thought that peter bright and i had many things in common; we both grew up in ohio, we both had careers in the live event and variety side of television, and the few times we had times to talk i thought we shared a mutual philosophy toward the ups and downs of life. but it wasn't until i read his "overdue" book that i realized just what a rich and storied life peter has had and how much more deeply he had experienced the highs and lows, particularly during his years in the military, than i ever could have imagined. it really amazes me just how little we know about people we think we know, and just how much more we appreciate who they are when we are fortunate enough to have that background filled in by someone as articulate and able to express both facts and feelings as peter has in this book. when i started to read it, i thought all of those common events that we shared would be an interesting parallel track to my life and as such i would have a great frame of reference, but as i read on, i realized just what an amazing story peter has to tell and just how well he tells it. ken ehrlich, executive producer, the grammy awards
Download or read book Long Overdue written by Charles P. Henry and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2009-09 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since the unfulfilled promise of “forty acres and a mule,” America has consistently failed to confront the issue of racial injustice. Exploring why America has failed to compensate Black Americans for the wrongs of slavery, Long Overdue provides a history of the racial reparations movement and shows why it is an idea whose time has come. Martin Luther King, Jr., remarked in his “I Have a Dream” speech that America has given Black citizens a “bad check” marked “insufficient funds.” Yet apart from a few Black nationalists, the call for reparations has been peripheral to Black policy demands. Charles P. Henry examines Americans'unwillingness to confront this economic injustice, and crafts a skillful moral, political, economic, and historical argument for African American reparations, focusing on successful political cases. In the wake of recent successes in South Africa and New Zealand, new models for reparations have recently found traction in a number of American cities and states, from Dallas to Baltimore and Virginia to California. By looking at other dispossessed groups—Native Americans, Holocaust survivors, and Japanese internment victims in the 1940s—Henry shows how some groups have won the fight for reparations. As Hurricane Katrina made apparent, the legacy of racial segregation and economic disadvantage is never far below the surface in America. Long Overdue provides an up-to-date survey of the political and legislative efforts that are now breaking the surface to move reparations into the heart of our national discussion about race.

Download or read book Overdue written by Amity Reed and published by Pinter & Martin Ltd. This book was released on 2020-10-01 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amity Reed became a midwife to serve women, but the reality of working in over-stretched and underfunded NHS maternity services soon shattered her illusions. She's not alone - for every 30 midwives that train, 29 will leave the profession. Overdue is both the devastating personal story behind the statistics, and a call for change in the NHS. Real-life stories capture the moments at the heart of midwifery: life, death, birth, tragedy and joy, and are embedded in a clear-sighted examination of what is working and what isn't in maternity services. The result is a book that asks - and tries to answer - questions that are at the heart of many people's working lives: how can we follow our calling, provide for our families and keep ourselves healthy, if the workplace and its systems are working against us?

Sudan accounts for the bulk of the overdue obligations to the Fund (80 percent), and Somalia for the remainder. Zimbabwe, which was in protracted overdue obligations to the PRGT at the time of the last Review, settled its overdue obligations to the PRGT on October 20, 2016."
Download or read book Overdue written by Valerie Schultz and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2019-07-16 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Valerie Schultz almost stumbled into prison ministry, a happy accident of a beginning. Initially fearful of the scary people she’d meet and the dark place she’d be working, she found that some inmates were dangerous, but many were kind; some were mean and some were friendly; some were misogynistic and some were respectful; some were quiet and some were loud. In short, they were a lot like the non-incarcerated population. As Schultz went from volunteering to working in a clerical position and then running a library on a yard, she learned to see the prisoners as human beings. They possessed all the quirks and gifts and flaws, the nobility and the sin, that define humanity—every single one of them a human being created and loved by God. It was no challenge to find God in all things in prison, because God was palpably everywhere. In Overdue, Schultz shares what she learned and the grace she received during her fourteen years inside an American prison. Her experience and insights will transform how you see the people around you and the world we all share.
