Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The USS Bullhead was the last American naval vessel lost in World War II. This history of the submarine--from launch to disappearance--is told by the only war correspondent allowed on a wartime submarine patrol. Narrow escapes from floating mines, fast dives to avoid enemy aircraft, and a daring sortie to rescue three badly hurt survivors of a downed B-25 are just a few of the adventures Martin Sheridan recounts. Trained as a feature writer, he shares his own experiences as well as the humorous and poignant incidents of everyday life aboard the submarine to capture that intangible spirit of camaraderie and sense of impending danger. First published in 1947, the narrative is based on a journal the author kept during the Bullhead's first war patrol in March and April 1945 and supplemental information from official Navy reports. The book, supported by a unique collection of period photographs, describes the perilous undersea war in the Pacific as only a firsthand account can.

Book Synopsis Presumed Lost by : Stephen Moore

Book excerpt: When submarines failed to return to port from patrol, they were officially listed by the Navy as “overdue and presumed lost.” Loved ones were notified by the War Department that their siblings, spouses, and sons were missing in action and presumed lost. While 52 U.S. submarines were sunk in the Pacific, the Japanese took prisoners of war from the survivors of only seven of these lost submarines. Presumed Lost is the compelling story of the final patrols of those seven submarines and the long captivity of the survivors. Of the 196 sailors taken prisoner, 158 would survive the horrors of the POW camps, where torture, starvation, and slave labor were common. This is the most complete and accurate record of their captivity experiences ever compiled. Author Stephen L. Moore draws on personal interviews with the survivors, as well as on diaries, family archives, and POW statements to reveal new details and correct longstanding errors in previously published accounts. Moore’s research brought to light the following facts: Most crewmen from USS Perch endured 1,298 days of captivity without their families ever being told that they were still alive. The Perch and USS Grenadier were so badly damaged by enemy depth-charge attacks that their crews were forced to scuttle their ships. USS Sculpin and USS S-44 went down fighting, with only forty-two men from the Sculpin being taken prisoner and half of them perishing on the way to Japan. USS Tang and USS Tullibee, victims of their own faulty, circling torpedoes, had few survivors, five of whom managed to escape from the sunken, burning Tang when it was 180 feet below the ocean surface. As many as six men survived the loss of USS Robalo after it struck a mine off Palawan, but none of those survived the prison camps. The book includes dozens of rare photos of the POWs, many of which have never before been published. Appendices include final muster rolls of the seven submarines and a complete list of the U.S. submariners who were held as POWs, with details of their various camps of internment

Book excerpt: The comprehensive reference to peacetime submarine disasters, updated with now-declassified Cold War events, the Kursk tragedy, and more. This is the fully revised and updated edition of the first comprehensive account of every peacetime submarine disaster from 1774 to the twenty-first century tragedy of the Kursk. By examining many of the sinkings in considerable detail, analyzing what went wrong, and describing the attempts made to rescue the crew and the vessel, Edwyn Gray traces the development of the submarine from the earliest experimental submersibles of the late eighteenth century to the nuclear-powered monsters of today. The appendices include the most comprehensive and accurate list of submarine disasters ever printed, in the compilation of which the author has had the cooperation of the US, French, Italian, Danish, and Japanese navies, as well as the RN Submarine Museum and the German U-Boat Archive. “An invaluable reference book for naval historians and also a most fascinating read for the layman.” —Journal of Military and Veterans’ Health Published in a previous edition as Few Survived

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From unpromising beginnings in March 1942, the Allied submarine base at Fremantle on the west coast of Australia became a vital part of the Allied offensive against Japan. Pushed back from the Philippines and the Netherlands’ East Indies, American submariners, accompanied by a small group of Dutch forces, retreated to Fremantle as a last resort. The location was chosen for its good harbor and the fact that it was outside the range of land-based Japanese aircraft. Unfortunately the base was also far from their patrol areas and supply lines, and it was difficult to reinforce should the enemy attack. Thanks largely to a welcoming civilian population, morale quickly improved. The hospitality and sense of belonging fostered by Western Australians became legendary among Allied submariners and remains central to their wartime memories. Perhaps as a result of such a positive experience, the Allied forces became much more successful in combat. Intertwining social and military history, Fremantle’s Submarines relates how courage, cooperation, and community made Fremantle arguably the most successful military outpost of World War II from the standpoint of troop morale.

Book excerpt: Author Charles Lockwood (Sink 'Em All) brings his same flair for submarine warfare story-telling to his account of Operation Barney, the secret mission during World War 2 to extend the conflict in the Pacific beyond the Sea of Japan and closer to the enemy's coastline. On June 9, 1945, torpedoes from nine American submarines - 'The Hellcats' - were launched at dozens of Japanese freighters, paralyzing maritime operations between Japan and Korea. Each U.S. sub was equipped with newly designed mine-detectors and Mark-18s -- electronic torpedoes that left no traceable wakes or fume exhausts. Operation Barney continued for 15 days and proved a crucial breakthrough in the war, with U.S. submarines sinking 28 Japanese ships totaling some 70,000 tons. Hellcats of the Sea is a riveting account of the planning and events of those 15 days.

Their aim was to protect themselves and families from a feared attempt by mobs to seize control of the city after the rebel troops left and before the Union troops arrived. Union naval forces fought their way up the Mississippi River past rebel forts and arrived off New Orleans on the 24h of April, 1862. Rebel troops began abandoning the city on April 23rd.and were completely gone in several days. The city did not surrender until April 29th, and it wasn't until May 1st that the first Union troops arrived. Europeans made up a large part of the population of the city at the time of the Civil War. The Confederate government permitted them the option of acting as auxiliary police rather than serving as Confederate troops. The Brigade leader, General Paul Juge ordered his men to protect Union surrender negotiators from the mob which threatened to kill the Union officers as the talks proceeded. As a result many considered him to be pro Union. He was also derided for his relationship with a quadroon woman. The author, Peter Juge, has lived all over the world as a US Foreign Service officer and international oil company executive. This is his seventh book. He was born and raised in New Orleans and heard the European Brigade story from relatives. As there was only one large Juge clan, he assumes he is related to Paul.

Book excerpt: Welcomed as the first book about American submarines in World War II to be written by a man who actually fought them, this compelling personal account of the war beneath the sea firmly established Edward L. Beach's reputation as a writer in the early 1950s. Given the survival rate of those in the silent service, it is a story many submariners did not live to tell. In fact, most of the crew of Beach's boat, the USS Trigger, were lost soon after he left for another assignment. A veteran of twelve war patrols, Beach's luck held out, and he authentically recaptures the moments of elation, desperation, and numbing fear that were part of the daily lives of these warriors as they hunted down the enemy in the Pacific. Beach helped sink the Trigger's first ships and survived more than his share of exploding depth charges from avenging warships. In the book, he weaves the story of his own boat with equally thrilling tales of other battle-hardened submarines and the brave and determined men who fought them against the Japanese. Beach's readers share in the destruction of five destroyers in four days and join in the deadliest game of all--stalking other submarines. They also come to understand the terror and uncertainty of being at the other end of the pursuit, silently sweating out depth-charge poundings in a leaking boat. For an authentic account of what went on under the waves, this book remains one of the very best.
