Dat wat men onder Surinaamse literatuur moet verstaan is in deze publicatie uitgelegd middels de natie theorie. Volgens deze theorie zou het Surinaamse volk vanwege haar verscheurdheid en diffusiviteit niet tot één natie gerekend mogen worden. Hierdoor werd het erg hachelijk om toch een omschrijving te vinden voor het begrip Surinaamse literatuur. Er is ook kritiek geuit op de selectiecriteria van Surinaamse literatoren die even dubieus ogen als diverse politieke en sociale mechanismen binnen de Surinaamse gemeenschap. Met name de gunningpolitiek om iemand langs het kanaal van de charitas als literair talent aan te merken (het omgekeerde is ook waar), wordt onder de loep genomen. Andere issues die eveneens zijn aangesneden betreft de publicatie in eigen beheer omdat het via de reguliere kanalen niet wilt vlotten, de waarde van de literaire kritiek binnen de Surinaamse gemeenschap, wie zich er als literaire criticus mag laten aanprijzen , literaire stromen zoals daar sprake van is, etc. Er is opvallend veel aandacht besteed aan de literaire analyse van werken en tot slot wordt er ook een brug geslagen tussen de zielenroerselen van de Surinaamse literatuur en die uit andere ontwikkelingslanden.

Hier, in dit tweede deel van deze historie, wordt verslag gedaan van de gebeurtenissen zoals die zich na 1800 afspeelden in de onafhankelijke gemeenschappen van Okaanse Marrons. Het is een bewogen geschiedenis van profetische bewegingen, heksenvervolgingen, en de opkomst van een eigen, inheemse, kerk. Al deze voor buitenstaanders exotische gebeurtenissen speelden zich af in een samenleving die hecht was geïntegreerd in het economische leven van de Guiana’s. In de twintigste eeuw vinden de eerste grote botsingen plaats tussen de Okanisi en het koloniale en postkoloniale bestuur van Suriname. Soms ging het om een staking die het economische leven van de kolonie dreigde te verlammen; later, eind jaren tachtig, toen Suriname onafhankelijk was, zorgde de opstand van enkele honderden Okaanse jongeren, en de gedoogsteun van de bevolking, voor een kritieke situatie in de jonge republiek. In deze eeuw zijn het voornamelijk conflicten over het behoud van het oude grondgebied, en zijn natuurlijke hulpbronnen, die de oude vrijstaat bedreigen. In Een zwarte vrijstaat in Suriname, deel 2, Van Wetering and Thoden van Velzen relate the history of the Okanisi after their successful escape into the South American rainforest and the signing of a peace treaty with Dutch planters in 1760. Following Part 1, which deals with their struggle for freedom, this volume describes the emergence of an autonomous Okanisi Maroon state; its integration into the economic life of the Guiana’s, but also its internal development, as it manifested itself through prophetic movements, anti-witchcraft purges and the rise of a native church. Predominantly based on oral sources, this book charts a previously undocumented history and provides a unique insight into a culture emerging from the roots of slavery.

De studie schetst een levendig en gedetailleerd beeld van de Surinaamse samenleving in de achttiende en negentiende eeuw. Aangetoond wordt dat er meerdere plantagesectoren waren—koffie, suiker en katoen—die structureel van elkaar verschilden en ieder een geheel eigen geschiedenis hebben gekend. Ook wordt uitvoerig stilgestaan bij de strijd tegen het water die het leven op de meeste Surinaamse plantages verzwaarde. Voor het grootste deel van de Surinaamse bevolking was de plantage behalve werk- ook woonplaats. Daarom wordt niet alleen de arbeid, maar ook de leefwereld van de plantagebewoners beschreven. Dat daarbij de meeste aandacht uitgaat naar de levenswijze en bestaansstrijd van de slaven ligt voor de hand: zij vormden nu eenmaal de overgrote meerderheid van de bevolking en waren van generatie op generatie gebonden aan de plantages. Surinaams contrast toont voorts aan dat de Surinaamse samenleving voortdurend in beweging was en veranderde. Roofbouw en overleven kenmerkten, in wankel evenwicht, de Surinaamse plantagemaatschappij. In hoeverre Suriname in dit en in andere opzichten afweek van het algemene Caraïbische patroon wordt duidelijk uit de vele vergelijkingen die worden gemaakt met andere plantagekoloniën in de regio.
