Book excerpt: This is a powerful and positive story about a quest for a change in life and the extraordinary possibilities of the human spirit. "Before I wrote this book, I was diagnosed as MORBIDLY OBESE by my primary-care physician following a yearly visit. The only problem with this diagnosis was that we never discussed this issue. I knew that I was overweight, but it wasn't until I witched doctors and picked up my medical records that I saw this in writing. I saw myself in front of the mirror every day, so I knew things were bad, but it wasn't until I read those words, MORBIDLY OBESE, that the gravity of the situation sunk in." -LAURA SINCLAIR At 55, Laura Sinclair was grossly overweight; the future looked dim and dangerous. Carrying extra weight was setting her up for the possibility of developing a chronic illness--heart disease, stroke, or worse. She decided to take ownership of her life and pave a new road to optimum health and happiness. -Learn how Laura lost over 40% of her body weight and kept it off. -How she reached a level of fitness and athleticism that she thought not possible in her 50s and beyond.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Called the “good nutrition bible” by one reviewer, The DASH Diet to End Obesity is the ultimate guide to common sense-lifestyle changes that will improve the health of the entire family. With a special emphasis on prevention, this book is written for parents, teachers, and anyone concerned about protecting themselves and their children from the health risks of obesity. This book is the most comprehensive guide to the DASH diet plan yet published. DASH® - Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension - was first formulated to combat hypertension (high blood pressure). But numerous studies have shown that the eating plan is also useful for dealing with excess weight, abnormal blood fats, Type 2 diabetes, and other health concerns. The DASH diet has soared in popularity because not only does it allow people to take charge of their own health and that of their families, they can do it while eating delicious food. The plan emphasizes seasonings, spices, healthy oils, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and other flavorful food choices. But unlike a mere recipe book, The DASH Diet to End Obesity explains the science and psychology of how to find success with the DASH approach. Author Dr. William Manger and his three distinguished colleagues have crafted a reader-friendly book geared to motivate people to make healthy, informed changes in their daily lives. The book offers in-depth information about fats, cholesterols, vitamins and minerals, omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, and more. An entire section is devoted to the role of salt and the dangers of consuming too much salt, especially for people who are overweight. The book also contains a special chapter about eating for the management of diabetes. Not only do the authors present a lot of information in an accessible tone, they provide detailed descriptions of how to incorporate this knowledge into every meal with memory strategies, charts, and quick tips. The DASH eating plan is not just a diet, however, and the book covers the importance of sleep, physical exercise, and staying psychologically motivated. The authors also dissect the reasons other diets fail, and discuss the risks and benefits of other methods of weight loss, including surgery and weight-loss drugs. This book represents the life work of the four prestigious authors; it is not a jump-on-the-bandwagon response to the recent popularity of the DASH diet. Dr. William Manger has been such a proponent of the DASH lifestyle that he has founded an organization that teaches the eating plan to young children in schools. Medical researchers and experts today are saying many parents could outlive their children because of runaway childhood obesity. This is the scenario The DASH Diet to End Obesity is dedicated to reversing.

Brand, a nationally-known wine expert, shares with the chief an interest in wine, and they meet once or twice a week to share a bottle of wine and talk about wine-related things. Wine talk changes to a discussion of criminal activity when a request for help with a colleague's tenure case escalates into an investigation of academic fraud, blackmail, arson and murder. When Brand begins looking into the first murder, he discovers the dean's secret notes about the faculty in hidden files in his computer. Knowledge of these secrets turns out to be explosive in more sense than one. The identification of the murderer takes place at a wine tasting, proving once again the truth of the saying, in vino veritas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the early 1990s, the diet drugs fen-phen and Redux achieved tremendous popularity. The chemical combination was discovered by chance, marketed with hyperbole, and prescribed to millions. But as the drugs' developer, pharmaceutical giant American Home Products, cashed in on the miracle weight-loss pills, medical researchers revealed that the drugs caused heart valve disease. This scandal was, incredibly, only the beginning of an unbelievable saga of greed. In Fat Chance, Rick Christman recounts a story that a judicial tribunal later described as "a tale worthy of the pen of Charles Dickens." Bill Gallion, Shirley Cunningham, and Melbourne Mills contrived to bring a class-action lawsuit against American Home Products in Covington, Kentucky. Their hired trial consultant, Mark Modlin, had a bizarre relationship with the presiding judge, Jay Bamberger of Covington, who was once honored as the Kentucky Bar Association's "Judge of the Year." Soon after, Stan Chesley, arguably the most successful trial attorney in the United States, joined the class-action suit. Ultimately, their efforts were rewarded with $200 million for the 431 plaintiffs, and the four lawyers immediately began to plunder their clients' money. When the fraud was discovered, two of the attorneys received long prison sentences and another was acquitted after claiming an alcoholism defense. All four were permanently banished from the practice of law and Judge Bamberger was disbarred and disrobed. Recounting a dramatic affair that bears conspicuous similarities to opioid-related class-action litigation against the pharmaceutical industry, Christman offers an engaging, if occasionally horrifying, account of one of America's most prominent product liability cases and the settlement's aftermath.
