Après avoir enseigné la théologie en Argentine en partageant la vie des favellas de Buenos Aires, il fut séquestré en 1976 par un groupe militaire d'extrême droite. Cet événement a changé sa vie. Depuis 1978, il donne des retraites d'initiation à la contemplation en Allemagne. L'itinéraire qu'il propose ici est marqué par la conviction que l'activité mentale dans la prière, comme la conscience des blessures psychiques mal cicatrisées peuvent gêner l'accès à la source de la vie spirituelle profonde. Au long d'un cheminement en dix étapes, il accompagne ses retraitants vers la conscience intime du réel, qui est la présence aimante de Dieu. Le chemin passe par l'exercice des sens, la respiration, le corps, le silence du raisonnement, l'acceptation des sentiments douloureux et la guérison intérieure, vers la prière du nom de Jésus. Devenir contemplatif dans l'oraison comme dans la vie, telle est la visée, et la grâce à accueillir, dans la ligne de la " Contemplation pour obtenir l'amour " des Exercices de saint Ignace. C'est dire qu'un tel chemin, qui rejoint la tradition chrétienne de la prière profonde, suppose que l'on soit devenu familier de l'Evangile. L'originalité du parcours réside dans les dialogues avec les participants, à la manière d'un accompagnement qui permet au lecteur de trouver l'attitude juste, d'éviter les dérives et de progresser dans l'attention active à la Réalité qui le porte, le Christ Jésus qui invite à demeurer en lui. Le Père Jalics a déjà animé plusieurs centaines de sessions. Son livre, qui a suscité un vif intérêt et provoqué de nombreuses réflexions en Allemagne, où il connaît sa septième édition, a été traduit en anglais, espagnol, italien, hongrois et néerlandais.
