Book excerpt: The Montane Alternative Silvicultural Systems (MASS) project was established in 1993 on eastern Vancouver Island to test alternative silvicultural approaches for regeneration that retain different patterns and densities of overstorey trees. In 1994, western redcedar, yellow-cedar and Douglas-fir container stock was planted at the MASS site to compare outplanting performance in shelterwood (high-density dispersed retention), patch cut (aggregated retention), green tree (low-density dispersed retention) and conventional clearcut silvicultural systems. This report presents the growth results and responses to silvicultural systems.--Includes text from document.

Chamaecyparis nootkatensis]) was held at the Univ. of Victoria in British Columbia, Canada. The symposium brought together experts to present cultural, biological, management and economic information on the two species. Although some papers or posters focused on just one of the cedars, many of the presenters covered both species and discussed the similarities and differences between them. This proceedings includes abstracts or short papers from all of the formal presentations or posters presented at the symposium. Charts and tables. This is a print on demand edition of an important, hard-to-find publication.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the origin, design, establishment and measurement procedures and first results of a large long-term cooperative study comparing a number of widely different silvicultural regimes applied to young-growth Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) stands managed for multiple objectives. Regimes consist of (1) conventional clearcutting followed by intermediate thinning; (2) retention of reserve trees to create a two-aged stand; (3) small patch cuts dispersed within a thinned matrix, repeated at approximately 15-year intervals to create a mosaic of age classes; (4) group selection within a thinned matrix on an approximate 15-year cycle; (5) continued thinning on an extended rotation; and (6) an untreated control. Each of these regimes is on operationsize units (about 30 to 70 acres each). Output variables to be evaluated include conventional timber growth and yield statistics, harvest costs, sale layout and administration costs, aesthetic effects and public acceptance, soil disturbance, bird populations, and economic aspects. Descriptive statistics and some initial results are presented for the first replicate, established in 1997-98.

Ministry of Forests. This book was released on 2007 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decisions about planting mixtures require an understanding of the survival and growth rates of the different species when grown together at different spacings; too many trees of either species may result in volume loss to overcrowding and mortality. The experiment described in this report examines the effects on growth and development of Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii [Mirb.] Franco) and western redcedar (Thuja plicata Donn ex D. Don in Lamb) after 14 years when grown at 500, 1000, or 2000 stems per hectare in Douglas-fir-western redcedar mixes of 1:0, 1:1, 1:3, and 0:1. Survival and height, diameter at breast height (dbh), volume, and crown growth were measured.--Document.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fundamental changes have occurred in all aspects of forestry over the last 50 years, including the underlying science, societal expectations of forests and their management, and the evolution of a globalized economy. This textbook is an effort to comprehensively integrate this new knowledge of forest ecosystems and human concerns and needs into a management philosophy that is applicable to the vast majority of global forest lands. Ecological forest management (EFM) is focused on policies and practices that maintain the integrity of forest ecosystems while achieving environmental, economic, and cultural goals of human societies. EFM uses natural ecological models as its basis contrasting it with modern production forestry, which is based on agronomic models and constrained by required return-on-investment. Sections of the book consider: 1) Basic concepts related to forest ecosystems and silviculture based on natural models; 2) Social and political foundations of forestry, including law, economics, and social acceptability; 3) Important current topics including wildfire, biological diversity, and climate change; and 4) Forest planning in an uncertain world from small privately-owned lands to large public ownerships. The book concludes with an overview of how EFM can contribute to resolving major 21st century issues in forestry, including sustaining forest dependent societies.

The requirements of each of the 63 species from 35 genera are described for areas in which they are likely to do well. Further, the book provides information about the origin and introduction (where applicable) of each species, climatic and site requirements, other silvicultural characteristics, pests and diseases, natural regeneration, provenance, seed production, nursery treatment, yield and timber characteristics. The book concludes with two simple keys for identifying the tree most likely to be encountered in woods.
