Book Synopsis Martha Maxwell, Rocky Mountain Naturalist by : Maxine Benson
Download or read book Martha Maxwell, Rocky Mountain Naturalist written by Maxine Benson and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1999-01-01 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ?See, there she is!? cried one visitor to the Centennial Exposition. ?Just think! She killed all them animals,? echoed another. ?There, that?s her!? All during the hot Philadelphia summer of 1876, throngs of people pushed and shoved their way into the Kansas-Colorado Building, eager to catch a glimpse of the small, dark-haired woman responsible for creating the extraordinary display of bears, deer, and other mammals cavorting over a Rocky Mountain landscape. Curious, skeptical, friendly?on and on they came, until the policemen stationed at the doors were hard-pressed to maintain control. The fairgoers were intent on seeing for themselves the ?modern Diana? who had come all the way from the wilds of Colorado. Maxine Benson?s finely crafted biography of Martha Maxwell illuminates the little-known but important career of a remarkable woman. Naturalist, taxidermist, museologist, artist?Maxwell pioneered in a number of fields new for women. Born in Pennsylvania in 1831 and educated in the Midwest, she traveled to the gold fields of Colorado with her husband in 1860. A chance encounter with a German taxidermist determined her lifework, and Maxwell soon devoted her boundless energy to hunting and mounting all forms of Rocky Mountain wildlife, which she displayed in unusual habitat settings in her museum in Boulder and later in Denver. Her spreading fame led to an invitation to exhibit her collection at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition, where she achieved international renown. As Maxwell?s major scientific and artistic contributions to natural history taxidermy and display were recognized, her influence carried to the Smithsonian Institution. Separated from her husband and alienated from her daughter, however, she became increasingly unhappy as her professional accomplishments grew. Her tragic and lonely death in 1881 revealed something of the price she paid for daring to be different. Like that of other accomplished women of her era, Maxwell?s fame did not keep pace with the significant influence she had on her profession. Thanks to Maxine Benson, Martha Maxwell now takes her rightful place in the history of the West and of the nation.

Download or read book Haunted Baraboo written by Shelley Mordini and Gwen Herrewi and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2021-08 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For decades, ghosts have been known to inhabit some of Baraboo's most prized historic locations. Buildings and mansions built by the Ringling brothers at the height of their circus empire now harbor apparitions of unidentified children, horse trainers and other circus workers. Residents throughout the Downtown Baraboo Historic District describe disembodied voices, footsteps and items moving on their own. Even historic homes, new homes and roadways have ghosts--a family awakened to find their dining room table set for a party of ten, a little girl realized that her "friend" wasn't getting any older and a Highway 12 hitchhiker materialized despite the highway being rerouted. Founder of Baraboo Tours Shelley Mordini and tour guide Gwen Herrewig share tales of Baraboo's more mysterious side.

Download or read book This Land written by Wayne N. May and published by Hayriver Press. This book was released on 2012-06-18 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wayne May has done more work and research on the North American setting for the Book of Mormon than any single individual. The evidence he has compiled is overwhelming as a witness not only to the setting of this book of scripture, but also to the reality of the Book of Mormon as a historical record. Hugh Nibley remarked that ?...one may well ask what kind of remains the Nephites would leave us from their more virtuous days. A closer approximation to the Book of Mormon picture of Nephite culture is seen in the earth and palisade structures of the Hopewell and Adena culture areas than in the later stately piles of stone in Mesoamerica.? (Hugh Nibley, The Prophetic Book of Mormon [Salt Lake City and Provo: Deseret Book Co., Foundation of Ancient Research and Mormon Studies, 1989], 271.) The Hopewell culture, discussed in Wayne May?s, This Land, is the only civilization in the Western Hemisphere that corresponds directly, in time and space, to the events described in the Book of Mormon and the statements of the prophet and translator, Joseph?Smith. The evaporation of the Hopewell Culture has taken place as the expansion of the settlements and population centers have grown since the early 1800?s. The best preserved details, drawings, and explanations of this culture can only be found in the records of eyewitness accounts and those who were present during the many excavations undertaken before the twentieth century. In this fourth volume of This Land, Wayne has brought together the works of early scholars and archaeologists as well as contemporary authors that have been exploring these settlements, monuments, and mounds of North America in a way that should have been done decades ago. Any serious student of the Nephite record must read This Land before coming to any conclusion about the geographical setting of the Book of Mormon. The evidence contained in This Land stands as another witness and testimony of this important scripture.
