Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although nearly everyone has heard the name of Robin Hood, few have actually read any medieval tales about the legendary outlaw. Stephen Knight and Thomas Ohlgren set out to correct this discrepancy in their comprehensive collection of all pre-seventeenth-century Robin Hood tales. The editors include such other "outlaw" figures as Hereward the Wake, Eustache the Monk, and Fouke le Fitz Waryn to further contextualize the tradition of English outlaw tales. In this text the figure of Robin Hood can be viewed in historical perspective, from the early accounts in the chronicles through the ballads, plays, and romances that grew around his fame and impressed him on our fictional and historical imaginations. This edition is particularly useful for classrooms, with its extensive introductions, notes, and glosses, enabling students of any level to approach the texts in their original Middle English.

Exeter, 1195. Renovations at a school in Smythen Street are disrupted by the shocking discovery of a partially mummified corpse hidden in the rafters, and county coroner Sir John de Wolfe is called in to investigate. Richard de Revelle, the school’s owner – and Sir John’s much-disliked brother-in-law – immediately points the finger at Nicholas de Arundell, an outlawed Cornish knight who now lives rough in the wilds of Dartmoor. As Sir John discovers, Nicholas has a good reason to bear a grudge against his unscrupulous brother-in-law, but is he really a killer? And if so, who exactly is it that he’s killed? The coroner begins to investigate, but then comes news of a second violent death. All signs point to the ‘noble outlaw’ as the culprit – but if Sir John’s to solve the case, he’ll need to find him first . . .

As the Henry II struggles with his rebelious children and the conflict between the Saxon nobility and the Norman conquerors continues on as bloody as ever, there is a figure that has remained firmly fixed in the imagation of generations - Robin Hood, an outlaw and a renegade nobility determined to bring down the men who took his land, his family, and his position. A tough, bloodthirsty warrior, Robin is more feared than any man in the county. And he becomes a mentor for Alan; with his fellow outlaws, Robin teaches Alan how to fight - and how to win. But Robin is a ruthless man - and although he is Alan's protector, if Alan displeases him, he could also just as easily become his murderer...From bloody battles to riotous feast days to marauding packs of wolves, Outlaw is a gripping, action-packed historical thriller that delves deep into the fascinating legend of Robin Hood.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlike such romanticized renegades as Robin Hood and Jesse James, there is another kind of outlaw hero, one who lives between the law and his own personal code. In times of crisis, when the law proves inadequate, the liminal outlaw negotiates between the social imperatives of the community and his innate sense of right and wrong. While society requires his services, he necessarily remains apart from it in self-preservation. The modern outlaw hero of film and television is rooted in the knight errant, whose violent exploits are tempered by his solitude and devotion to a higher ideal. In Hollywood classics such as Casablanca (1942) and Shane (1953), and in early series like The Lone Ranger (1949-1957) and Have Gun--Will Travel (1957-1963), the outlaw hero reconciles for audiences the conflicting impulses of individual freedom versus serving a larger cause. Urban westerns like the Dirty Harry and Death Wish franchises, as well as iconic action figures like Rambo and Batman, testify to his enduring popularity. This book examines the liminal hero's origins in medieval romance, his survival in the mythology of the Hollywood western and his incarnations in the urban western and modern action film.

Shortly thereafter Tucker offers Chase a square meal and a warm bed in a fine hotel. How can they afford it? Easy. When morning comes, they will leave without paying. Tucker is an outlaw, and Chase is grateful to learn his ways. The rules are simple: Never look scared, never get greedy, and never stay in a town more than one night—unless that town is Bandolero, where every thief is welcome. After finding a home in this paradise, Chase quickly earns himself the nickname “Mad Dog.” But when the love of a beautiful woman forces him to turn on his fellow bandits, he finds himself pursued by lawman and outlaw alike, with death at his back and no friend to call his own.

This book was released on 2016-03-31 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arguing that outlaw narratives become particularly popular and poignant at moments of national ecological and political crisis, Sarah Harlan-Haughey examines the figure of the outlaw in Anglo-Saxon poetry and Old English exile lyrics such as Beowulf, works dealing with the life and actions of Hereward, the Anglo-Norman romance of Fulk Fitz Waryn, the Robin Hood ballads, and the Tale of Gamelyn. Although the outlaw's wilderness shelter changed dramatically from the menacing fens and forests of Anglo-Saxon England to the bright, known, and mapped greenwood of the late outlaw romances and ballads, Harlan-Haughey observes that the outlaw remained strongly animalistic, other, and liminal. His brutality points to a deep literary ambivalence towards wilderness and the animal, at the same time that figures such as the Anglo-Saxon resistance fighter Hereward, the brutal yet courtly Gamelyn, and Robin Hood often represent a lost England imagined as pristine and forested. In analyzing outlaw literature as a form of nature writing, Harlan-Haughey suggests that it often reveals more about medieval anxieties respecting humanity's place in nature than it does about the political realities of the period.
