Book excerpt: In order to justify the feasibility of small-scale concrete masonry modeling technique for the construction of the 1/3-scale masonry test building, model masonry materials and assemblages performance related to nominal full-scale concrete masonry tests must be clearly established. This will be accomplished by conducting a suite of material tests (block units, mortar, grout, and reinforcing steel), assemblage tests (axial compression prism, bed-joint shear (cross specimens), diagonal tension, and flexural tension), and component tests (out-of-plane and in-plane walls) using both full-scale and reduced scale units. This experimental study is intended to investigate the feasibility of using of 1/3-scale direct modeling techniques of concrete block masonry materials and assemblages under different loading conditions. The methodology and techniques of fabrication 1/3-scale direct models of concrete block masonry components material and masonry assemblages were evaluated. For concrete masonry components material, the strength of block unit, mortar and grout and the stress-strain and ductility characteristics of reinforcement were examined. The behavior of ungrouted and grouted 1/3-scale assemblages were investigated by conducting axial compression, bed-joint shear, diagonal tension and modulus of rupture tests. Direct correlation between the model and prototype test results was performed. Good correlation of failure modes, strength and deformation characteristics was achieved. The experimental results demonstrated that direct modeling techniques applied to the investigation of behavior characteristics of masonry materials and assemblages is effective in understanding the overall behavior of full-scale concrete block masonry.

Book excerpt: Masonry, as a conventional construction material, is widely used due to its durability, strength, hygrothermal performance, and aesthetics. However, the behaviour of masonry structures is not fully comprehended, especially in the face of uncertainty. This lack of understating on the behaviour of masonry structures is usually compensated by imposing overly conservative design provisions. Inherent uncertainties in the material and geometric properties of masonry structures result in large scatter in the experimentally or analytically predicted behaviour. Thus, understanding the influence of these uncertainties on the structural behaviour of masonry structures is of paramount importance to lay down the basis for reliable structural design. This thesis focuses on the uncertainty analysis of the out-of-plane behaviour of reinforced concrete masonry walls using mechanics-based finite element (FE) models and experimental testing data. Specifically, this thesis includes three main phases. In the first phase, the probabilistic behaviour of reinforced concrete masonry walls is investigated, employing mechanics-based macro FE models in conjunction with Monte Carlo simulations (MCS). The effect of the inherited uncertainties in the material and geometric properties on different response quantities (e.g., load capacity and deformation capacity) is also investigated through a variance-based global sensitivity analysis. Additionally, the model uncertainty in FE-predicted load capacity is quantified to characterize the model error, which is found to be influential compared to geometric and material uncertainties, though FE models are commonly used for numerical studies. The second phase focuses on assessing the reliability of reinforced concrete masonry walls loaded out-of-plane with the limit state functions formulated employing the developed macro FE models. In this phase, the importance of model uncertainty on the reliability assessment is revealed. The reliability assessment conducted considering different global and local failure criteria provides insights into their effect on the safety levels of walls. The reliability assessment is found to be sensitive to the adopted failure criteria. In addition, different factors are found to influence the reliability assessment of the walls designed according to the masonry design code; specifically, walls with different slenderness ratios and load eccentricities show inconsistent reliability levels. The model errors associated with the out-of-plane load capacity provided in masonry design codes in North America (i.e., CSA S304-14 and TMS 402-16) are investigated in the third phase. FE based and experimental data are used to quantify the model error associated with design code based models. In addition, the sensitivity of the model error to the variations associated with different design parameters is investigated. It is found that CSA S304-14 is overly conservative for highly slender walls with low load eccentricities, while TMS 402-16 gives more reasonable capacity predictions for such walls. However, TMS 402-16 is found to overestimate the capacities of highly slender walls with relatively high reinforcement ratios and load eccentricities. The code based models are employed in reliability assessment to investigate the influence of the accuracy of the behavioural model on the reliability of the masonry walls. It is found that using the code based models in the reliability assessment without considering their model error results in significantly biased reliability results. This highlights the need and potential room for design code model improvement.

Book excerpt: This text provides a basis for a standardized approach to structural masonry, using an integration of experimental and computational techniques. Accurate displacement-controlled materials experiments have produced an extensive database of strength, stiffness and softening properties for tension, compression and shear, and this data has been transferred into numerical models for simulating the deformational behaviour of masonry structures. The models have been implemented into finite and distinct element codes and have subsequently been verified against shear wall experiments and analytical solutions for masonry parts.

Book excerpt: "A number of researchers have conducted experimental tests on unreinforced masonry walls (URM) strengthened with advanced composite materials. Consequently, the strengthening design guidelines are limited in their scope to URM. This research aimed to investigate the behavior of reinforced masonry walls strengthened with advanced composite and subjected to out-of-plane pseudo-static cyclic load. Experimental and analytical studies were conducted to evaluate the performance of different techniques such as near surface mounted (NSM) and externally bonded (EB) fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) with epoxy resin, in addition to NSM with cementitious adhesive and fiber reinforced cementitious material (FRCM). The experimental part included three phases. In the first phase, a series of 42 reinforced masonry walls were tested to study the effectiveness of advanced composites in enhancing out-of-plane flexural capacity. The effect of long-term environmental exposure on strengthening systems was investigated in the second phase of study by testing 10 reinforced masonry walls. The third phase focused on bond behavior between the advanced composite and the concrete masonry unit at different temperatures; 56 specimens were used for this purpose. The results indicated that the non-arching strengthened reinforced masonry wall's behavior was significantly dependent on the type of fiber and fiber reinforcement ratio. The specimens strengthened with glass under combined environmental cycles exhibited an insignificant change in terms of ultimate strength as compared to laboratory conditioned specimens. The theoretical part included the investigation of bond reduction factors, seismic performance, and the nonlinear analysis of strengthened reinforced masonry wall using moment-curvature analysis. As a result of this study, the proposed model for predicting debonding strain and the moment-curvature relation presented an excellent prediction compared to the experimental results"--Abstract, page iv.

Book excerpt: In the last few decades, a considerable amount of experimental and analytical research on the seismic behaviour of masonry walls and buildings has been carried out. The investigations resulted in the development of methods for seismic analysis and design, as well as new technologies and construction systems. After many centuries of traditional use and decades of allowable stress design, clear concepts for limit state verification of masonry buildings under earthquake loading have recently been introduced in codes of practice.Although this book is not a review of the state-of-the-art of masonry structures in earthquake zones, an attempt has been made to balance the discussion on recent code requirements, state-of-the-art methods of earthquake-resistant design and the author's research work, in order to render the book useful for a broader application in design practice. An attempt has also been made to present, in a condensed but easy to understand way, all the information needed for earthquake-resistant design of masonry buildings constructed using traditional systems. The basic concepts of limit state verification are presented and equations for seismic resistance verification of masonry walls of all types of construction, (unreinforced, confined and reinforced) as well as masonry-infilled reinforced concrete frames, are addressed. A method for seismic resistance verification, compatible with recent code requirements, is also discussed. In all cases, experimental results are used to explain the proposed methods and equations. An important part of this book is dedicated to the discussion of the problems of repair, retrofit and rehabilitation of existing masonry buildings, including historical structures in urban centres. Methods of strengthening masonry walls as well as improving the structural integrity of existing buildings are described in detail. Wherever possible, experimental evidence regarding the effectiveness of the proposed strengthening methods is given.
