Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "TOMORROW" My Sister Said, Tomorrow Never Came. (Metis language translated into English) "That's the train you'll ride on," Papa said. Mama muffled sounds as she pulled me close to her, then my two sisters. "My little girls, I'm going to miss you so much!" I was very confused. I wanted to cry. I didn't like seeing my Mama cry. Why aren't Mama and Papa coming with us I thought as we were guided onto the train? I tried looking out the window wanting to see Mama and Papa once more and was told to sit. As the train blew its loud whistle, we slowly began to move. Once more I jumped up and pressed my face to the window. "Mama, Papa," I cried until their faces faded in the distance. I was five years old. I didn't understand where I was going. Several long hours came to pass as an overwhelming sadness continued to engulf me. I could not control my tears. I wanted to go home! I wanted my Mama! I wanted my Papa! The more my sisters, Helene and Lucy, tried to console me, the harder I cried. "Shhh," Helene whispered. As I closed my heavy eyes and laid my head on her lap, I heard her softly say, "Tomorrow tomorrow we'll go home." My sisters were big girls. They were much older than I. They would know when I would get to see my Mama and Papa and my Brother Tommy again. After all, Helene was eight years old and Lucy was seven. They would take care of me. Papa told them to watch over me. My world as I knew it no longer existed. We were shipped off to a government boarding school. It was 1927. "Indians" must be civilized! The Indians must be divorced from his primitive ways! We must recreate him! Make a new personality! Teach them the white man's ways! Helene? Lucy? Where are you? As time passed I began to forget my Mama and Papa and all that was before. Did the government succeeded in recreating me. I was now eight years old. We were told we would get to go home for the summer. I wanted to stay at school. I would miss my friends. Again, another unknown world was thrown at me. A sadness engulfed me again. A sadness I knew I felt before. What did Mama and Papa look like? Where did we live? I tried to picture home family but the memories of when I left home seem to be forgotten. Three long years passed since my sister Helene said these words, "Tomorrow my sister".

Book excerpt: Whidbey, the lovely little island in Puget Sound, was a small world that could be quickly filled with cruel gossip or haunting memories. Yet Ginger Cowan had stayed on long after Deuin MacPherson had married her, confessed on their wedding night he'd been unfaithful, and left for Chicago. She'd gone away to college, come back to open an antique shop and to make a good life for herself, now it seemed only her family's bitterness over the "betrayal" remained, naggingly reminding her that Devin had come back to Seattle...that at any minute he might walk back into her life. Had she really forgiven him? Had she really forgotten? What would she do if he were to reappear, take her in his arms...ask her to trade the hurt and humiliation of yesterday for the joy and promise of tomorrow?
Book Synopsis Totalitarian Dictatorship by : Daniela Baratieri
Download or read book Totalitarian Dictatorship written by Daniela Baratieri and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-08 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume takes a comparative approach, locating totalitarianism in the vastly complex web of fragmented pasts, diverse presents and differently envisaged futures to enhance our understanding of this fraught era in European history. It shows that no matter how often totalitarian societies spoke of and imagined their subjects as so many slates to be wiped clean and re-written on, older identities, familial loyalties and the enormous resilience of the individual (or groups of individuals) meant that the almost impossible demands of their regimes needed to be constantly transformed, limited and recast.

The Rift Bubbles offer much-sought protection, but is the safety they promise anything more than an illusion? A weapon crafted by the nearly extinct Ourankeli may hold the key to gaining the upper hand—or it may be a doomsday bomb too dangerous to chance wielding. The Asterions strive tirelessly to improve upon and create new weapons that can kill Rasu, even as Nika Kirumase draws tantalizingly close to unlocking the true power of kyoseil. Yet for every strategic move Commandant Miriam Solovy makes to thwart the Rasu’s advances, the enemy swiftly counters in a deadly battle of escalation. We don’t need to fear death, for it cannot hold us. Regenesis, long the exclusive domain of Anadens, begins to take root in human society. When a conspiracy to sabotage the future of regenesis is uncovered, an unlikely advocate decides to risk his one-and-only life to bring the perpetrators to justice. And amidst all the conflict, the enigmatic Katasketousya have been playing a secret long game with the fate of the universe. Now events race toward a rendezvous with their unfolding machinations, and the resulting collision is going to change everything. * In Amaranthe, where exotic alien life, AIs, wormholes, indestructible starships and the promise of immortality rule the day, no feat seems out of reach for humanity. Download or read book Erased written by Omer Bartov and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-02-22 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Erased, Omer Bartov uncovers the rapidly disappearing vestiges of the Jews of western Ukraine, who were rounded up and murdered by the Nazis during World War II with help from the local populace. What begins as a deeply personal chronicle of the Holocaust in his mother's hometown of Buchach--in former Eastern Galicia--carries him on a journey across the region and back through history. This poignant travelogue reveals the complete erasure of the Jews and their removal from public memory, a blatant act of forgetting done in the service of a fiercely aggressive Ukrainian nationalism. Bartov, a leading Holocaust scholar, discovers that to make sense of the heartbreaking events of the war, he must first grapple with the complex interethnic relationships and conflicts that have existed there for centuries. Visiting twenty Ukrainian towns, he recreates the histories of the vibrant Jewish and Polish communities who once lived there-and describes what is left today following their brutal and complete destruction. Bartov encounters Jewish cemeteries turned into marketplaces, synagogues made into garbage dumps, and unmarked burial pits from the mass killings. He bears witness to the hastily erected monuments following Ukraine's independence in 1991, memorials that glorify leaders who collaborated with the Nazis in the murder of Jews. He finds that the newly independent Ukraine-with its ethnically cleansed and deeply anti-Semitic population--has recreated its past by suppressing all memory of its victims. Illustrated with dozens of hauntingly beautiful photographs from Bartov's travels, Erased forces us to recognize the shocking intimacy of genocide.
