Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Little Book of Our Country Four hundred and fifty years ago no one suspected that there was such a land as America. Europeans knew a little of Africa and of Asia, but nothing of the rest of the world. They were particularly eager to know more of Asia, because from the East, that is, from Japan, China, and India, came many of their luxuries, such as silks, pearls, jewelry, perfumes, and spices. These were brought to Europe by long and wearisome overland journeys, and if there was only some way of reaching the East by water, this trade would be much easier to carry on. How to find such a way was a puzzle. Most people thought the earth was flat, and that if a ship went too near the edge, it would slip over into no one knew what. A few learned men believed that the earth was round and that by sailing west from Europe, one would come to the East, but no one was bold enough to push out into the waters of the unknown Atlantic. This was full of whirlpools and all sorts of sea monsters, people thought, and was the home of evil spirits. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Winning of the West, Vol. 6: An Account of the Exploration and Settlement of Our Country From the Alleghanies to the Pacific To France and then by France to the United States early in the present century, really would not have altered its final destiny, so far at least as concerns the fact that it would ultimately have been inde pendent of both France and Spain, and would have been dominated by an English-speaking peo ple; for when once the backwoodsmen, of whom Boon was the forerunner, became sufficiently numerous in the land they were certain to throw off the yoke of the foreigner; and the fact that they had voluntarily entered the land and put themselves under this yoke would have made no more difference to them than it afterwards made to the Texans. So it was with Aaron Burr. His conspiracy was merely one, and by no means the most dangerous, of the various conspiracies in which men like Wilkinson, Sebastian, and many of the members of the early Democratic societies in Kentucky, bore a part. It was rendered possible only by the temper of the people and by the pecu liar circumstances which also rendered the earlier conspiracies possible; and it came to naught for the same reasons that they came to naught, and was even more hopeless, because it was undertaken later, when the conditions were less favorable. The movement deliberately entered into by many of the Kentuckians in the years 1793 and 1794, to conquer Louisiana on behalf of France, must be treated in this way. The leader in this. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of the Great West As a youth Theodore Roosevelt was an enthusiastic student of Western history and pioneer types. Later, as ranchman and hunter, he grew to know intimately and to love deeply the rough, free life of the Western plains. Mr. Roosevelt's interest in history probably was inherited, but his fondness for outdoor life grew out of his grateful love for his foster mother - the green earth - who took the delicate youth in her rough, but kindly, embrace and gave him a sound body and a clear vision. It was during the quiet evenings, and the otherwise idle hours, spent at Elkhorn," his Dakota ranch, that Theodore Roosevelt penned most of the fascinating pictures of frontier and ranch life that make up this present volume. "The Backwoodsmen of the Alleghanies" and "Lewis and Clark and the Exploration of the Far West" are from The Winning of the West," permission to republish here having kindly been granted by G. P. Putnam's Sons. The other stories are from Hero Tales" and Ranch Life and the Hunting Trail." Some of these stories have been condensed from the original version for reasons of space. They occu pied an utterly untenable position. Their vil lages lay midway between the white settlements southeast of the Ohio and the towns of the In dians round Sandusky, the bitterest foes of the Americans and those most completely under British influence. They were on the trail that the war-parties followed, whether they struck at Kentucky or at the valleys of the Alleghany and Monongahela. Consequently, the Sandusky In dians used the Moravian villages as half-way houses, at which to halt and refresh themselves whether starting on a foray or returning with scalps and plunder. Download or read book Hard Knocks written by Harry Young and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hard Knocks: A Life Story of the Vanishing West In presenting this book, the publishers feel that they need not emphasize either its purpose or its merits. They will speak for themselves. The reader will need no spur to his interest, nor the work require either apology or explanation. Interest is certain from beginning to end, and few readers will wish to lay the book aside until they have reached the end of the rapidly succeeding incidents. If crudity mar in any respect, it will be quickly forgotten in the manifest truthfulness and candor of the narrator. The great lesson of the book is that "truth is stranger than fiction." The life story here given belongs to a generation that has not only seen the world's greatest advancement, but has been a part of the greatest development of our own country. It has been a period rich in story, and the experiences here detailed run like a thread through the entire fabric. In the main, they deal not with the great heroes, - the Carsons, the Custers, and the Buffalo Bills, - but with the great multitude of brave and adventurous spirits that have swept over the West in the past generation, and to whose undaunted courage and tireless energy our development is mainly due.
