Book excerpt: Nothing can sap a person's strength and hope quite like a cancer diagnosis--unless it is the energy-stealing chemotherapy and surgeries faced in the fight against cancer. But one can find hope and strength in the pages of Scripture and in the experience of someone who has been there. Strength Renewed is an encouraging devotional for those living in the valley of cancer. Meditations combine Scripture and stories from the author's own experience and can be read in sequential order to move the reader through a typical cancer journey from diagnosis through treatment. Each devotion also stands on its own, so readers can go directly to the entry that speaks to their need. Each devotional includes a short prayer and a Scripture verse for encouragement.

In Hope for the Journey through Cancer, she shares with readers her personal triumphs and setbacks with humor and refreshing candor, always reminding us of God's desire to meet us exactly where we are. These sixty devotions are divided into sections--diagnosis, surgery, treatment, and recovery--each incorporating Scripture into daily life. Book excerpt: An Emotional Journey Humor and Hope Through Breast Cancer is a cartoon book drawn with a unique humorous twist on an emotional journey of breast cancer patients. The chapters are broken into the stages a person undergoes: discovery of the cancer, surgery, radiation, chemo, and finally, the happier days after all treatments. Heather did not back away from the silent emotions one goes through; it truly touches on many of the emotions of this journey in a distinctive way to assist that others will know they are not alone and understand there is hope. This book has been reviewed by cancer survivors, mental health professionals, and clergy, and has been found to be supportive for those fighting for their lives. Regardless of where you or a loved one is along this individual journey; these cartoons will be inspiring and humorous. Reading this gem of a book will make you laugh and sometimes cry-it's a cathartic experience for all. -Irene K. Rickus, MS, LMHC Hess leads us through Humor and Hope to the other banks of the ocean of pain and anxiety where one can sprout again with hope and peace from the rubbles of cancer. -Father Sebastian Earthedath, MST, Pastor, Our Lady Queen of Peace. When Heather called me after her breast cancer diagnosis, I was heartbroken. Our sorority of breast cancer fighters and survivors is exclusive, but not coveted. The attitude Heather had was positive, just like her attitude toward life. Her unique insight into life situations has been well-illustrated within her artwork for many years. I know her collection of comical viewpoints of the uncomfortable, quirky positions that cancer fighters and their caregivers face will bring many laughs, lighten the uneasiness of sensitive topics, and encourage hope for the future. -Paula S. O'Neil, PhD, Author of Fighting Cancer like a Girl, Pasco County Clerk & Comptroller

Book excerpt: A surprisingly open memoir co-authored by the married duo of a world class oncologist and a cancer survivor about love, pain, hope, strength and resilience while navigating the overwhelming breast cancer advocacy movement. Off Our Chests recounts the story of Liza and John's experience with her diagnosis and treatment. Written in alternating voices, Liza details her treatment, the complex decisions she had to make throughout her course of chemotherapy and radiation, including clinical trial participation and an elective double mastectomy, the added complexity of being treated at the cancer center of which John was the chief of hematology and oncology, and the emotional impact of knowing she may die as a young woman with young children. John, who lost his own mother to cancer at the age of 13, provides an inside look into the world of cancer care and research, but also the perspective of someone who understands the medicine but who was unprepared for assuming the role of caregiver and worried husband. John adds insights into his world of running the clinical operations of the cancer center where Liza would receive her care, commentary on the breast cancer machine, the need for clinical research, the high cost of cancer care, and an easy to understand explanation of the clinical and scientific background of oncology. While they both felt that they were already expert commentators on their own "Cancer Channel" during the course of Liza's illness, they both came to realize how little understanding they truly had of what a cancer diagnosis does to the patient, caregivers, children, family members, and friends. Liza and John share their most intimate thoughts, including many that were previously unsaid--even between the two of them. Both gain an understanding of the other's life, a deeper appreciation of what it means to be a cancer patient, and of the emotional strains of being an oncologist where so many of the patients die on their watch.

Book excerpt: In February of 2009 the author heard five of the most terrifying words in the English language, "Mr. Metzler, you have cancer." Mike was given a 50/50 chance of surviving for five years, even with being treated with chemotherapy and radiation. That diagnosis started what would become two journeys in Cancer World, a physical and psychological place unwillingly inhabited by cancer patients, their caregivers, families, and friends. The first journey was that of a patient being successfully treated for Stage 4 head and neck cancer for nine months. That journey included numerous medical appointments and scans, many visits to the Emergency Room, and one 4-day stay in the hospital after nearly dying from a reaction to his chemotherapy. His second and much longer journey has been that of a 10-year survivor who has coped with many debilitating and permanent side effects from chemotherapy and radiation treatments. It has left his body, his "Brokedown Palace," with numerous surgical scars, poorly functioning muscles, a speech disability, and a very limited choice of foods that can be eaten and swallowed safely. That last condition has led to him needing a feeding tube for the rest of his life. Most of his story is told in real time, as written in the blog he started when treatments began in 2009 and maintained for the next nine years. Other parts of the story are told through his reflections on the many ups and downs he experienced along the way. Team Mike was the large group of family members, friends, medical professionals, fellow members of the Cancer Survivors' Network community, and even a pet cat who helped Mike through his most difficult times over the years. Its captain was his wife, Terry, who contributes a key chapter from the perspective of his primary caregiver-a viewpoint rarely expressed in the many books written about cancer today. Mike's tells his story with great emotion, clarity, sometimes uncomfortable honesty, and an unfailing sense of humor. In the end, it's a story of perseverance, survival, and optimism-even when there was little to be optimistic about so many times on his journeys. Mike chooses not to dwell on the many things that cancer and its treatments have taken from his life. Rather, he is grateful for the many good things he still has in his life, and the many good things yet to come in the future.

For most people, cancer is a hard, reluctant journey through rugged, unfamiliar terrain. Ultimately, however, there are really only two ways to face cancer: in our own strength or with the help and strength that God supplies. Strength for the Cancer Journey provides empathetic, daily reminders that God is present for anyone facing the challenges of cancer. Each of these thirty devotionals draws upon anecdotes and insights from God’s Word to help readers invite God into the realities, uncertainties, and frustrations of their cancer experience. While cancer is a journey no one wants to take, no one ever has to walk that road alone. This devotional book will help both patients and caregivers to engage deeply with God, gaining new strength for the cancer journey.
