Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a caravan of gypsies arrives at Alta Novis, looking to make a deal, these new visitors raise suspicions. It isn’t until the battle lord sees what they have for sell that his concerns and reservations are raised even more—a cannon, guns, and other weapons that haven’t been seen in hundreds of years, and only heard about in stories these days. The group isn’t happy when Yulen denies their requests, confiscates their weapons, and sends them on their way, but not before loading their wagons with supplies in a show of good will. But it isn’t enough for the gypsy leader. When one of their own goes missing, Yulen and Atty will stop at nothing to get the battle prince back, but at what cost? Do their swords and arrows stand a chance against guns? A number of obstacles stand in their way as they go to retrieve their son, but the connection between a Mutah mother and her child will conquer all.

Unexpected visitors with an invitation to a horse sale and auction from an unknown battle lord piques Yulen D’Jaques’ interest. The opportunity to renew their horses’ bloodlines is too good to pass up, although he knows the trek will be long and dangerous. Yulen worries Atty isn’t yet up to the trip, but she refuses to let him go without her, even if that means leaving the children behind. The decision is a hard one, but they won’t risk Mattox and Mistelle’s lives along with their own. Although Bloods are still a threat, along with any number of other creatures, they plan to make a few stops and hopefully pick up some allies along the way, both Mutah and Normal. The scenes they stumble upon along the way are vicious. Entire settlements have been slaughtered, soldiers mutilated. And just when the group think they’ve made it to the safety of the compound for the sale, they learn that Normals can be more brutal than Bloods. The new battle lord is anti-Mutah, and when his plot to take advantage of his visitors comes to light, Yulen won’t stand for it. Ghosts from Yulen’s past also resurface, bringing a secret to light. Can Yulen and Atty work through it? Will he be able to step up and do what’s right? Of course he will. It’s what a good battle lord would do. And it’s time to teach everyone else that lesson.

Download or read book Henry V written by William Shakespeare and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 2014-05-09 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Upon opening their expensive new book in 1623, buyers of the folio collection of William Shakespeare’s plays were promised The Life of Henry the Fift. What they went on to read, however, was not a full “life” in the modern biographical sense. The battle of Agincourt is the play’s main event; every scene leads up to or follows directly from the climax of one of England’s most one-sided and famous victories. The play’s ambiguous portrayal of war has spurred critical debate for centuries, and its performances have reflected shifting political and cultural views. James D. Mardock’s Introduction provides an extensive discussion of Henry V’s critical and stage histories and explores the play’s complex relationship with other history plays (and with history itself). The appendices provide materials on the play’s historical background and sources, as well as documents on contemporary warfare. Additional materials, including an annotated text of the 1600 quarto (Q1) edition, are available on the Internet Shakespeare Editions website. A collaboration between Broadview Press and the Internet Shakespeare Editions project at the University of Victoria, the editions developed for this series have been comprehensively annotated and draw on the authoritative texts newly edited for the ISE. This innovative series allows readers to access extensive and reliable online resources linked to the print edition.

Book Synopsis The Case for Shakespeare's Authorship of The Famous Victories, with the Complete Text of the Anonymous Play by : Seymour M. Pitcher
Download or read book The Case for Shakespeare's Authorship of The Famous Victories, with the Complete Text of the Anonymous Play written by Seymour M. Pitcher and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1961-06-30 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the opinion of the author, the anonymous sixteenth-century playscript entitled "The Famous Victories of Henry the Fifth" is actually one of the first efforts by the young but spirited dramatist, William Shakespeare. Produced about 1586—when the still unknown playwright-actor was 22 years old—the play in question is neither poetic nor highly distinguished. But Professor Pitcher, an ardent Shakespearean scholar, here presents an interesting and ingenious argument for his belief that the unknown playwright was the Bard himself. The object of much critical disparagement and scholarly dispute, "The Famous Victories" covers approximately the same span of events as that in the playwright's famous trilogy immortalizing Henry of Monmouth. In its own time, it was considered exciting. "What a glorious thing it is," wrote Thomas Nash in 1592, "to have Henry the Fifth represented on the stage leading the French king prisoner and forcing him and the dolphin to swear fealty." Dr. Pitcher believes that Heming and Condell omitted "The Famous Victories" from their First Folio in 1623 because they felt it was not worthy of a place with the later, highly professional plays of Shakespeare, none of which contains such inexperienced writing. If Dr. Pitcher's line of reasoning is correct, his conclusion is of great value in dissipating some of the mystery surrounding Shakespeare's early years. For despite the play's slapstick and buffoonery, it shows that its 22-year-old author was no mere holder of horses at theatre doors, but was already well read enough among "rusty brass and wormeaten books" to piece together his story of "The Famous Victories" from the chronicles of Edward Hall, Raphael Holinshed, and John Stow. Certain to arouse violent discussion among Shakespearean scholars, Dr. Pitcher's book is the considered product of many years of thought and study. The text of the Elizabethan play concerned will in itself be of interest to students of the drama, and the possibility that Shakespeare himself penned its lines will lend an excitement to the reading of the scenes. The famous "Grafton portrait" of a youth believed to be the young Shakespeare appears as frontispiece.
