Book excerpt: Earth is only but a flourishing and lively rock floating through space and time. As we expand further and further away from our world, we can truly see how puny and insignificant we are. Humans evolved from our given green and blue paradise and developed into a unique and powerful species with beautiful culture, extensive knowledge, and striking diversity that is surprisingly not yet found anywhere else in our - potentially finite but probably infinite - universe. While it is easy to fall into a sense of egotism and feel special, we forget that we are indeed nothing in the vastness of the cosmos. And while we haven't yet encountered anyone else like us, our search for other intelligent forms of alien life is far from over. However, covering this sense of insignificance isn't to make us feel less than we are. We are marvelous creatures; we have the remarkable ability to create our destinies based on the theories, concepts, and gifts of the universe. The purpose of this book is for self-awareness in discovering your place in the universe. We are, in fact, quite puny in the magnitude of the cosmos and beyond, but we can connect with our cosmic selves, become immense, make the most out of each of our lives, and leave behind, what I like to call, your Astrolegacy.Humans are curious animals, and while ignorance may be bliss, the consciousness of who we are, where we come from, and what is in store for us, is the most beautiful and grandiose accomplishment we can have. We all should ask the difficult yet necessary questions of who are we? What is human? What is real? What do we actually know? In this book, I will pose existential interrogations and give you the answers through Astrobiology, Medicine, Astrosociology, Psychology, and Evolution. We are a part of the universe that is observably billions of light-years in extent and billions of years old. All segments of the cosmos are evolving and interconnected; our galaxy is no exception. The stories of our solar system, our planet, and ourselves are part of the grand ultimate narrative of the universe. We are a part of the cosmic evolution. Whether you already believe in this cosmic connection or not, all of us already have an inborn relationship to the ether, as humankind is of stardust. It is scientifically proven that in each of our bodies, our atoms were created in nuclear reactions in astral ovens spilled into the cosmos through supernovae eruptions, and finally merged into each of us through the long process that is the evolution of life. This proves that our existence is of the universe, that our human destinies are intimately connected to the cosmos and cosmic evolution. Therefore, in this book, while I ask the potentially fearing questions of what is real? And who are we? - it is to inspire motivation to make your own destiny, give you further appreciation of your beautiful and unique existence, and uncover your impact on the expansive size and timeline of the universe. Let me introduce you to your Astrolegacy.

Book excerpt: A daughter's journey to rediscover her father and understand the culture of space engineers During the late 1960s, while M. G. Lord was becoming a teenager in Southern California and her mother was dying of cancer, Lord's father-an archetypal, remote, rocket engineer- disappeared into his work at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, building the space probes of the Mariner Mars 69 mission. Thirty years later, Lord found herself reporting on the JPL, triggering childhood memories and a desire to revisit her past as a way of understanding the ethos of rocket science. Astro Turf is the brilliant result of her journey of discovery. Remembering her pain at her father's absence, yet intrigued by what he did, Lord captures him on the page as she recalls her own youthful, eccentric fascination with science and space exploration. Into her family's saga she weaves the story of the legendary JPL- examining the complexities of its cultural history, from its start in 1936 to the triumphant Mars landings in 2004. She illuminates its founder, Frank Malina, whose brilliance in rocketry was shadowed by a flirtation with communism, driving him from the country even as we welcomed Wernher von Braun and his Nazi colleagues. Lord's own love of science fiction becomes a lens through which she views a profound cultural shift in the male-dominated world of space. And in pursuing the cause of her father's absence she stumbles on a hidden guilt, understanding "the anguish his proud silence caused both him and me, and how rooted that silence was in the culture of engineering."

Book excerpt: A spellbinding literary thriller about terror, war, greed, and the darkest secrets of the human soul, by the author of the million-copy bestseller The Interpretation of Murder. Under a clear blue September sky, America's financial center in lower Manhattan became the site of the largest, deadliest terrorist attack in the nation's history. It was September 16, 1920. Four hundred people were killed or injured. The country was appalled by the magnitude and savagery of the incomprehensible attack, which remains unsolved to this day. The bomb that devastated Wall Street in 1920 explodes in the opening pages of The Death Instinct, Jed Rubenfeld's provocative and mesmerizing new novel. War veteran Dr. Stratham Younger and his friend Captain James Littlemore of the New York Police Department are caught on Wall Street on the fateful day of the blast. With them is the beautiful Colette Rousseau, a French radiochemist whom Younger meets while fighting in the world war. A series of inexplicable attacks on Rousseau, a secret buried in her past, and a mysterious trail of evidence lead Young, Littlemore, and Rousseau on a thrilling international and psychological journey-from Paris to Prague, from the Vienna home of Dr. Sigmund Freud to the corridors of power in Washington, D.C., and ultimately to the hidden depths of our most savage instincts. As the seemingly disjointed pieces of what Younger and Littlemore learn come together, the two uncover the shocking truth behind the bombing. Blending fact and fiction in a brilliantly convincing narrative, Jed Rubenfeld has forged a gripping historical mystery about a tragedy that holds eerie parallels to our own time. Watch a video

Book excerpt: "Wise, witty, readable, and very, very useful. A tour de force from the world's leading authority on branding." —Anthony Hopwood, Said Business School, Oxford Brands are a cultural phenomenon of our time. Yet, whether praised or derided, they have suffered from a critical debate characterized by routine thinking, glib assumptions, or mere prejudice. Wally Olins draws on a lifetime of marketing experience to explain why it is time to throw the old mission statements away, what happens when a brand goes global, when we shouldn't automatically assume that the customer comes first, and how it might be good news that branding is set to spread even further. Above all, Olins provides a positive rejoinder to the new orthodoxies of the "No Logo" critics of branding by showing how they confuse their views about brands with their views about capitalism. As he argues, brands are no longer just about corporations, products, and services. In fact, all the significant institutions in our lives—the towns, cities, regions, or countries in which we live, our sports teams and museums, our consumer groups and charities—are given strength, identity, a defining role, and a satisfying cohesion via branding, one of the most significant social—as well as business—developments of modern times. Always wise, questioning, and iconoclastic, Wally Olins takes us to the literal heart of the matter: our crucial neglect of the way in which consumer decisions about brands are as emotional as all the other important decisions in our lives. For everyone in marketing, advertising, design, and business, and for anyone who wants to understand how the world works in the early twenty-first century, this is one of those rare books that breaks the mold.

Book excerpt: In his work as a spiritual teacher interacting with seekers and activists from around the world, Chris Saade has witnessed a remarkable recent phenomenon: an emerging wave of spirituality that is socially and globally engaged in the pursuit of justice, earth care, and solidarity. Saade calls this movement "second wave spirituality," and in this book he maps out the cutting-edge ideas that are fueling this burgeoning wave of engaged spirituality. He challenges us to rise to our spiritual task and join the millions of all faiths who are awakening to the suffering and social struggles of all living beings. According to Saade, second wave spirituality holds a vision of the intrinsic values of love: justice, global peace, solidarity, inclusion, democratic freedom, compassion, and reconciliation. Saade explores current trends of thought that are shaking the foundations of our belief systems and propelling us toward an evolutionary leap. We are in the midst of a spiritual renaissance, Saade asserts, a universal reawakening that will steer us away from the abysmal global dangers we are facing. The book also includes a collection of quotations as a resource for those working for peace, justice, and inclusion. By dividing the selections into theme-specific chapters, Saade helps us easily access the wisdom and companionship of other souls committed to our diversity, our oneness, and our pursuit of justice.
