Download or read book Cantos and Strophes in Biblical Hebrew Poetry III written by P. van der Lugt and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-10-10 with total page 634 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume deals with the rhetoric, the formal and thematic framework, of Psalms 90-150 (the Fourth and Fifth Book of the Psalter). It is the conclusion of the Psalms Project started with Psalms 1-41, OTS 53 (2006) , and continued with Psalms 42-89, OTS 57 (2010). Formal and thematic devices demonstrate that the psalms are composed of a consistent pattern of cantos (stanzas) and strophes. The formal devices especially include quantitative balance on the level of the cantos in terms of verselines, verbal repetitions, and (on the level of the strophes) transition markers. The quantitative approach to a psalm in terms of verselines, cola and/or words in most cases clearly discloses a focal message. This massive study is rounded off by an updated introduction to the canto design of biblical poetry (including the book of Job, Lamentations, the Songs of Songs, Deutero-Isaiah and other major poems of the Hebrew Bible).

Download or read book Cantos and Strophes in Biblical Hebrew Poetry II written by P. van der Lugt and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2010-01-11 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume deals with the poetic framework and material content of the Second and Third Books of the Psalter (Psalms 42-72 and 73-89). It is a continuation of the Psalms Project started in OTS 53 (2006). Formal and thematic devices demonstrate that the psalms are composed of a consistent pattern of cantos (stanzas) and strophes. The formal devices include quantitative balance on the level of cantos in terms of the number of verselines, verbal repetitions and transition markers. A quantitative structural approach also helps to identify the focal message of the poems. Introductions to the design of biblical poetry and the rhetorical centre of the psalms conclude this massive study. The third volume, dealing with the Fourth and Fifth Books of the Psalter (Psalms 90-106 and 107-151), is in preparation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This three-volume commentary on the Psalms engages hermeneutics for preaching, employing theological exegesis that enables the preacher to utilize all the psalms in the Psalter to craft effective sermons. It unpacks the crucial link between Scripture and application: the theology of each preaching text/psalm--what the author is doing with what he is saying in each psalm--is explored and explicated. While the primary goal of the commentary is to take the preacher from text to theology, it also provides a sermon outline for each of the preaching units in the Psalms. The unique approach of this work results in a theology-for-preaching commentary that promises to be useful for anyone teaching from the Psalter with an emphasis on application.

Book excerpt: This book, the initial volume in a small collection of re-mixed psalms, showcases the first forty-one psalms. It aims to engage them in their ancient Hebrew language and context, transforming them into vibrant, contemporary English spoken word. While doing so, it maintains a deep respect for the original, honoring its roots while giving it a fresh twist for a new generation. Each remix follows the original verse by verse, ensuring that every emotion and piece of wisdom remains. Yet, the transformation isn't just in the words. Every remixed psalm gets a new title that reflects its modern makeover. each psalm is also paired with a powerful photo to highlight and deepen its message, a move which really gives this volume a nice magazine feel. These photos, like the spoken word, invite each reader to stop, think, feel, and connect with God through the psalm. As an added bonus, the audio/video for each psalm can be obtained for free on the ProveText podcast.
