Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1832, John, Walter, and Daniel Pearce, and their brother-in-law, William Smith Wilson, walked west from their homes in Ohio prospecting for land. When they reached the Fox River in the vicinity of modern Oswego, they agreed they had found the place they wanted to settle. The next year, 1833, after selling their Ohio farms, they traveled west by wagon with their families and became the first settlers in Oswego Township. Just two years later, Lewis B. Judson and Levi F. Arnold laid out a new village on land first claimed by Wilson, creating the foundation of todays bustling village of Oswego. A stagecoach route crossroads, the seat of Kendall County for nearly 20 years, and a market town for the surrounding agricultural area, Oswego grew steadily until the Civil War. After the war, growth slowed until the second half of the 20th century when the area began to boom, both in population and economically. This book offers many of the areas newest residents a chance to look back at Oswego Townships rich heritage.

Book Synopsis Around Oswego by : Terrance M. Prior
Download or read book Around Oswego written by Terrance M. Prior and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 1996-09-01 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With Around Oswego, readers are invited to experience satisfying glimpses of over one hundred years of history and change. Active as a busy commercial port city in the 1880s, Oswego would redefine itself as a recreation and tourist destination by the 1980s. This evolution is witnessed through text and pictures, as factories, textile mills, lumber docks, coal trestles, and schooners were replaced with pleasure boats, marinas, hotels, restaurants, and parks. Familiar as well as rare and previously unpublished images document changes in the local landscape. Readers will meet some of Oswego's citizens, from international industrialist Thomas Kingford and Medal of Honor recipient and reformer Dr. Mary E. Walker, to soldiers and factory workers. Celebrate the opening of a turn-of-the-century playground, watch a circus parade, and enjoy a quiet picnic scene on a since-vanished shore line. Discover the outside world's interest in Oswego with photographs from United Nations Week in June 1943, and the World War II refugee center at Fort Ontario.

Neither they nor their families were ever the same, and local author Natalie Joy Woodall relates their diverse experiences. William Adriance enlisted twice, despite suffering from rheumatism, marrying and starting a family during the war. Otis Mason Miner and his brother enlisted shortly after Fort Sumter surrendered, and in later years, Otis and his wife became pillars of their community. Many others made the ultimate sacrifice or suffered from wounds--seen and unseen--for the rest of their lives. Book Synopsis Parley P. Pratt by : Terryl L. Givens
Download or read book Parley P. Pratt written by Terryl L. Givens and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011-09-21 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After Joseph Smith and Brigham Young, Parley P. Pratt was the most influential figure in early Mormon history and culture. Missionary, pamphleteer, theologian, historian, and martyr, Pratt was perennially stalked by controversy--regarded, he said, "almost as an Angel by thousands and counted an Imposter by tens of thousands." Tracing the life of this colorful figure from his hardscrabble origins in upstate New York to his murder in 1857, Terryl Givens and Matthew Grow explore the crucial role Pratt played in the formation and expansion of early Mormonism. One of countless ministers inspired by the antebellum revival movement known as the Second Great Awakening, Pratt joined the Mormons in 1830 at the age of twenty three and five years later became a member of the newly formed Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, which vaulted him to the forefront of church leadership for the rest of his life. Pratt's missionary work--reaching from Canada to England, from Chile to California--won hundreds of followers, but even more important were his voluminous writings. Through books, newspaper articles, pamphlets, poetry, fiction, and autobiography, Pratt spread the Latter-day Saint message, battled the many who reviled it, and delineated its theology in ways that still shape Mormon thought. Drawing on letters, journals, and other rich archival sources, Givens and Grow examine not only Pratt's writings but also his complex personal life. A polygamist who married a dozen times and fathered thirty children, Pratt took immense joy in his family circle even as his devotion to Mormonism led to long absences that put heavy strains on those he loved. It was during one such absence, a mission trip to the East, that the estranged husband of his twelfth wife shot and killed him--a shocking conclusion to a life that never lacked in drama.
