Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the anatomy and biomechanics of the trapeziometacarpal joint and explains the pathogenesis and treatment of trapeziometacarpal joint osteoarthritis, also known as rhizarthrosis. The discussion of treatment sets out both conservative and surgical approaches, clearly explaining the indications for the various options, as well as their advantages and disadvantages. The trapeziometacarpal joint is a phylogenetically recent articulation that permits the pinching movements of the index finger and thumb so important in daily activities. Degenerative disease involving the trapeziometacarpal joint is an important disabling condition that affects predominantly females over 50 years old. Although a number of treatments are now available, there is no single gold standard. Conservative treatments can control pain yet are unable to halt progression of the articular aging, while none of the surgical solutions employed when conservative treatments prove insufficient can be considered perfect. For example, use of a spacer can restore strength but does not always completely alleviate pain while arthroplasty eradicates pain within a few weeks but cannot restore strength. In thoroughly reviewing the available treatments, this book will enable the practitioner to select the best option for the individual patient.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early osteoarthritis is novel topic for orthopedic surgeons and its process begins immediately after joint injury. The mechanical restoration of the joint surface or ligamentous stability is not sufficient to restore the homeostatic environment in the joint, and this leads to osteoarthritis, despite mechanical stability and alignment. This book sheds light on the various mechanisms and systems involved in the gradual decline of the injured joint toward manifest osteoarthritis. Published in collaboration with ISAKOS, this volume appeals to all stakeholders in surgical orthopaedics and sports medicine.

Book excerpt: Osteoarthritis is one of the most debilitating diseases affecting millions of people worldwide. However, there is no FDA approved disease modifying drug specifically for OA. Surgery remains an effective last resort to restore the function of the joints. As the aging populations increase worldwide, the number of OA patients increases dramatically in recent years and is expected to increase in many years to come. This is a book that summarizes recent advance in OA diagnosis, treatment, and surgery. It includes wide ranging topics from the cutting edge gene therapy to alternative medicine. Such multifaceted approaches are necessary to develop novel and effective therapy to cure OA in the future. In this book, different surgical methods are described to restore the function of the joints. In addition, various treatment options are presented, mainly to reduce the pain and enhance the life quality of the OA patients.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Osteoarthritis is the most common cause of musculoskeletal disability, affecting five million people in Britain. By far the majority of cases are managed in the community. A considerable proportion of patients self-medicate, while others are treated by a GP and the primary health care team. This book provides an overview of the condition, its causes and natural history. Diagnosis of osteoarthritis is also explained including descriptions of joint examination, monitoring of progression and assessment of disability. The book advocates a practical approach to osteoarthritis care, the mainstay of which is patient education and symptom management. It provides advice on both pharmacological and non-pharmacological pain management, the use of exercise, physiotherapy and weight loss where necessary. Topics discsussed also include: informing the patient of the disease and its prognosis; ways in which patients can adapt their home and their lifestyle to work within their physical capabilities; and surgery options.
