Book Synopsis Nkrumah's Ghana and East Africa by : Opoku Agyeman
Download or read book Nkrumah's Ghana and East Africa written by Opoku Agyeman and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book reinforces the verdict that Pan-Africanism in the Nkrumah era represented the most important indigenous political force on the African continent - the most significant single African attempt to affect in an important way the speed and direction of social change in Africa. The core period in this study, 1957-1966, represents the most potent phase in the history of this redemptive movement in Africa. Nkrumah's efforts at influence could not, and did not, take the same form in the three East African countries. In every case, political-ideological contextual factors dictated the pattern of input. In Tanzania, where Nyerere's calculated and studied "evolutionism" was the main concern, the main line of attack was geared to pushing the Tanzanian leader and his people toward Nkrumah's "immediatist" continental integration formula.
Download or read book At Penpoint written by Monica Popescu and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2020-08-14 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In At Penpoint Monica Popescu traces the development of African literature during the second half of the twentieth century to address the intertwined effects of the Cold War and decolonization on literary history. Popescu draws on archival materials from the Soviet-sponsored Afro-Asian Writers Association and the CIA-funded Congress for Cultural Freedom alongside considerations of canonical literary works by Ayi Kwei Armah, Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o, Ousmane Sembène, Pepetela, Nadine Gordimer, and others. She outlines how the tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union played out in the aesthetic and political debates among African writers and intellectuals. These writers decolonized aesthetic canons even as superpowers attempted to shape African cultural production in ways that would advance their ideological and geopolitical goals. Placing African literature at the crossroads of postcolonial theory and studies of the Cold War, Popescu provides a new reassessment of African literature, aesthetics, and knowledge production.

Book Synopsis Between Solidarity and Economic Constraints by : Christoph Bernhardt
Download or read book Between Solidarity and Economic Constraints written by Christoph Bernhardt and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2023-04-27 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until the end of the Cold War in 1990, building projects and architectural icons played an important role in the self-portrayal of the competing systems. However, as the current research shows, we also find a large variety of forms of cooperation between the East, the South, and the West, not to forget the manifold cross-border entanglements within the South or the East. This book explores the intersection of two strands of research. On the one hand, interaction in the field of architecture and construction between actors from socialist countries and from countries of the Global South have increasingly won interest amongst historians of architecture and planning. On the other hand, in the context of the strongly emerging Cold War Studies, scholars have explored cooperation and circulation across the Iron Curtain with a focus on economic and research planning. This book connects perspectives of planning, construction and architectural design with those on economic interests and conflicts in projects and networks. Furthermore, it opens the view to the hubs of communication and exchange, and on patterns of longterm transformation and appropriation of architecture.

Book Synopsis Institutional interaction in environmental governance by : Peter Narh
Download or read book Institutional interaction in environmental governance written by Peter Narh and published by Cuvillier Verlag. This book was released on 2015-06-08 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this work, the attempt is made to explore and understand the interaction between different institutions in environmental governance, and the role of human livelihood strategies in this interaction. With a case study of teak farming and sand winning in the Dormaa Municipality and Dormaa East district in midwestern Ghana, the work seeks to contribute to understanding the dynamics and role of institutions and human behaviour relationship in environmental governance. The study has been formulated and conducted following some observations of interaction between statutory and customary institutions in regulating human activities on the natural environment in Dormaa. Prior to this study, observations of this author in some communities in the Dormaa Municipality and Dormaa East district showed that statutory and customary environmental governance institutions influenced each other to shape the ways different people acted on the natural environment. Moreover, it was observed that the actions of people in turn influenced how these institutions functioned and affected each other.
