Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: He walked on the Moon. He flew six space missions in three different programs--more than any other human. He served with NASA for more than four decades. His peers called him the "astronaut's astronaut." Enthusiasts of space exploration have long waited for John Young to tell the story of his two Gemini flights, his two Apollo missions, the first-ever Space Shuttle flight, and the first Spacelab mission. Forever Young delivers all that and more: Young's personal journey from engineering graduate to fighter pilot, to test pilot, to astronaut, to high NASA official, to clear-headed predictor of the fate of Planet Earth. Young, with the assistance of internationally distinguished aerospace historian James Hansen, recounts the great episodes of his amazing flying career in fascinating detail and with wry humor. He portrays astronauts as ordinary human beings and NASA as an institution with the same ups and downs as other major bureaucracies. He frankly discusses the risks of space travel, including what went wrong with the Challenger and Columbia shuttles. Forever Young is one of the last memoirs produced by an early American astronaut. It is the first memoir written by a chief of the NASA astronaut corps. Young's experiences and candor make this book indispensable to everyone interested in the U.S. space program.

He thought he'd finally escaped the violence of his past in the north woods of Wisconsin. He had no idea how wrong he was. As a terrible blizzard descends upon Killdeer, David is awakened by a gunshot, followed shortly by frantic pounding on his front door. He pulls a shotgun from its rack, opens the door and meets Anya, a frightened young woman with a disturbing request: "Help me. Please! Someone's trying to kill me!" David shelters the woman and quickly draws the attention of the killer pursuing her, a relentless hunter who will stop at nothing to claim his victim. Through a series of text messages, the killer makes his presence known and presents David with a deadly ultimatum. More lives than Anya's are now at stake… unless David complies with the killer's wishes. As the weather worsens, the people of Killdeer are forced to take shelter in the local hotel, where emergency preparations have been made for an extended stay. David and Anya go there as well… but the killer may have followed them. When the killer strikes again, David's fears are realized. Worse, as a relative stranger to the town, many suspicious eyes are turning in his direction. Trapped by the weather in an overcrowded hotel slowly boiling over with fear and mistrust, David is faced with three problems: He must protect Anya at all costs, knowing full well that it may cost him, and the people of Killdeer, everything. He must find and stop a killer who has shown the ability to cut power and communications, has eyes and ears everywhere, and is able to strike at will. He must face the darkness rising up within himself, changing him, pulling him far from his faith, and threatening to drag him down forever. Orion, the sequel to the award-winning Victor: The Reloaded Edition*, is more than a tale of suspense, intrigue, and ultimate stakes that will keep you awake deep into the night. It is a story of internal struggle and difficult decisions, highlighting the war for our souls between what we want and what we need. Orion is the story of every reader's heart, and its message will linger long after the final page is read.

But times have changed and the crimes of the past may not stay hidden much longer, especially with a referendum on Scottish independence just around the corner. Who are the saints and who are the sinners? And can the one ever become the other?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doctor Faustus is a classic; its imaginative boldness and vertiginous ironies have fascinated readers and playgoers alike. But the fact that this play exists in two early versions, printed in 1604 and 1616, has posed formidable problems for critics. How much of either version was written by Marlowe, and which is the more authentic? Is the play orthodox or radically interrogative? Michael Keefer’s early work helped to establish the current consensus that the 1604 text was censored and revised; the Keefer edition, praised for its lucid introduction and scholarship, was the first to restore two displaced scenes to their correct place. Most competing editions presume that the 1604 text was printed from authorial manuscript, and that the 1616 text is of little substantive value. But in 2006 Keefer’s fresh analysis of the evidence showed that the 1604 quarto’s Marlovian scenes were printed from a corrupted manuscript, and that the 1616 quarto (though indeed censored and revised) preserves some readings earlier than those of the 1604 text. This edition has been updated and revised. Keefer’s critical introduction reconstructs the ideological contexts that shaped and deformed the play, and the text is accompanied by textual and explanatory notes and excerpts from sources.
