Book Synopsis Aepinus's Essay on the Theory of Electricity and Magnetism by : Roderick Weir Home
Download or read book Aepinus's Essay on the Theory of Electricity and Magnetism written by Roderick Weir Home and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-08 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in St. Petersburg in 1759, F.U.T. Aepinus's Tenuimen theoriae electricilatis el magnetismi was one of the outstanding achievements of eighteenth-century physics. Its rigorous mathematical investigation of electricity and magnetism was an important and innovative departure from the primarily qualitative and nonmathematical treatments that preceded it. P. J. Connor's translation of the original Latin edition is the first to appear in any western European language, and the introductory monograph and notes by R. W. Home provide a far more definitive account of Aepinus's life and work than has heretofore been attempted. Originally published in 1979. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the great figures of the American Enlightenment, David Rittenhouse of Pennsylvania rose from his work as a mechanic and clockmaker of exquisite craftsmanship to informed, careful astronomy and effective experimental work in optics, magnetism, and psychology. This book shows how he applied his scientific ability to public projects and, eventually, to the establishment of a 'national mint', and how he used his increasing prestige to further crucial political objectives of the time. This man, considered a brilliant scientist by Franklin and Jefferson, was, according to Benjamin Rush, "one of the luminaries of the eighteenth century." Originally published in 1964. Book Synopsis The Collected Letters of Charles Olson and J. H. Prynne by : Ryan Dobran
Download or read book The Collected Letters of Charles Olson and J. H. Prynne written by Ryan Dobran and published by University of New Mexico Press. This book was released on 2017-06-01 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edited by poet and scholar Ryan Dobran, this volume of correspondence between the American poet Charles Olson (1910–1970) and the English poet J. H. Prynne (b. 1936) sheds light on a little-known but incredibly influential aspect of twentieth-century transatlantic literary culture. Never before published, the letters capture their shared passion for knowledge as well as their distinct writing styles. Written between 1961 and Olson’s death in 1970, the letters display the mutual admiration and intimacy that developed between the two poets after Prynne initiated their exchange when pursuing work for the literary magazine Prospect. This work illustrates how Olson and Prynne influenced each other, and it represents an important step toward understanding their contributions to poetics on both sides of the Atlantic.
Book Synopsis Studies on Gersonides by : Gad Freudenthal
Download or read book Studies on Gersonides written by Gad Freudenthal and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-11-27 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: R. Levi ben Gershom (Gersonides, 1288-1344) is one of the greatest and most original figures of Medieval Jewish thought. He wrote numerous works in philosophy, science and biblical exegesis. Some of his scientific works, most notably his highly innovative Astronomy, were translated from Hebrew into Latin and could thus reach non-Jewish scholars. The twelve studies collected in this bilingual volume (English and French in equal parts) offer for the first time a comprehensive overview and assessment of Gersonides' work in astronomy, mathematics, logic, natural science, and psychology. Gersonides' contributions are analyzed within the context of contemporary philosophy and science in Hebrew, Arabic, and Latin. New light is also shed on the reception of Gersonides' work within European science. The volume includes a very extensive bibliography of writings by and about Gersonides. From the contents: Part I: Gersonides' Astronomy: Bernard R. Goldstein, José Luis Mancha, José Chabas, Henri Hugonnard-Roche, Guy Beaujouan. Part II: Gersonides' Work in Mathematics: Tony Lévy, Karine Chemla, Serge Pahaut. Part III: Gersonides' Science in Its Relations to His Philosophy and Theology: Herbert A. Davidson, Tzvi Y. Langermann, Charles H. Manekin, Amos Funkenstein, Gad Freudenthal.

Book Synopsis Elements of Early Modern Physics by : J. L. Heilbron
Download or read book Elements of Early Modern Physics written by J. L. Heilbron and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2024-03-29 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elements of Early Modern Physics comprises the two long introductory chapters of J. L. Heilbron's monumental work Electricity in the 17th and 18th Centuries: A Study of Early Modern Physics plus a concluding summary of the remaining chapters. Heilbron opens with a presentation of the general principles of physical theory and a description of the institutional frameworks in which physics were cultivated in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. He argues that the single most important contributor to physics in the seventeenth century was the Catholic Church. In the first half of the eighteenth century, Cartesian and Newtonian physicists disagreed over principles but thought in similar terms and cultivated the same sort of qualitative natural philosophy. Work towards an exact physics, which took on important dimensions after 1770, confounded the programs of both. Heilbron shows that by attending too closely to the Copernican revolution and the confrontation of great philosophical systems, historians have seriously misjudged the character of early modern science.
