Book excerpt: The search for materials with high optical nonlinearity has driven decades of research, with little success in developing materials that are suitable for third-order nonlinear optical applications that utilize the intensity-dependent refractive index or intensity-dependent absorption, for example. Organic materials, with their highly delocalized electron systems that lead to large nonlinearities and fast (10-15 s) optical response times and the relative ease at which their molecular properties can be tailored (allowing certain molecular properties to be isolated and optimized through molecular structure variations), are ideal candidates for the next generation of nonlinear optical materials. These materials have led to the largest molecular nonlinearities measured, but still remained several orders of magnitude below their theoretical limits. Our aim in this work is to approach the absolute limit, but also to keep the molecular size small. This research direction should lead to a dense packing of molecules with high nonlinearity in the solid state, which will then lead to the large bulk nonlinearities necessary for all-optical applications. With donor-substituted cyanoethynylethene molecules, we have measured off-resonant nonlinearities within a factor of 50 of their theoretical limits and predict that solid-state devices made from these materials can be up to an order of magnitude larger than other materials made from organic molecules. By measuring a large number of molecules with different structural variations, we have isolated the electron donor and acceptor structures as necessities for large third-order nonlinearities in small molecules. Our best molecule has a molecular third-order polarizability per mass of g & d5; rot = 6.5 x 10-23 m5V-2Kg-1, the highest value measured to date. We have also measured our molecules on resonance, which leads to measurements of the two-photon absorption cross-section sigma TPA. These measurements give a value of 9 x 10 -48 cm4s/photon for our best molecule, which is an order of magnitude larger than a chromophore optimized for two-photon absorption. Because of the record high results measured in these molecules, along with their ability to be vapor deposited into integrated devices, we suggest that this family of molecules may be the predecessors to the next generation of applied third-order nonlinear optical materials.

Book excerpt: The determination of the wavelength dependence of the complex third-order polarizability of organic molecules delivers information on the mechanisms of resonance enhancement and allows for comparison of the two-photon absorption cross sections on their peak to the off-resonant third-order polarizabilities. The experimental technique of degenerate four-wave mixing offers several advantages over other comparable techniques, including sensitivity, background-free signal, automatization, and information on excited state lifetimes. This work uses experimental data, computational chemistry, and analysis of the relevant terms in the sum-over-states quantum mechanics expression to analyze the significant contributions to the third-order polarizability, mechanisms of resonance enhancement, and comparison of the off resonant values, to peak resonant values. This information provides insight to the structure-property relationships for the third-order polarizability, allows for comparison to fundamental limits, and assessment of the potential for molecules to form solid state materials with a large third-order susceptibility. The use of donor-acceptor (D/A) substitution allows for the realization of small molecules with large third-order polarizabilities. However, in contrast to symmetric non-D/A oligomers that have third-order polarizabilities which scale by a power law as the molecule is made larger, D/A substituted molecules only scale up to a certain length, beyond which the molecule is over-extended and the third-order polarizability does not increase further. This work will analyze the scaling of non-D/A and D/A substituted molecules, determine the optimum length for D/A substituted molecules, and explain the physics of the saturation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main goal of this dissertation is to investigate the third-order nonlinearity of organic molecules. This topic contains two aspects: two-photon absorption (2PA) and nonlinear refraction (NLR), which are associated with the imaginary and real part of the third-order nonlinearity ([chi]3) of the material, respectively. With the optical properties tailored through meticulous molecular structure engineering, organic molecules are promising candidates to exhibit large third-order nonlinearities. Both linear (absorption, fluorescence, fluorescence excitation anisotropy) and nonlinear (Z-scan, two-photon fluorescence, pump-probe) techniques are described and utilized to fully characterize the spectroscopic properties of organic molecules in solution or solid-state form. These properties are then analyzed by quantum chemical calculations or other specific quantum mechanical model to understand the origins of the nonlinearities as well as the correlations with their unique molecular structural features. These calculations are performed by collaborators. The 2PA study of organic materials is focused on the structure-2PA property relationships of four groups of dyes with specific molecular design approaches as the following: (1) Acceptor-[pi]-Acceptor dyes for large 2PA cross section, (2) Donor-[pi]-Acceptor dyes for strong solvatochromic effects upon the 2PA spectra, (3) Near-infrared polymethine dyes for a symmetry breaking effect, (4) Sulfur-squaraines vs. oxygen-squaraines to study the role of sulfur atom replacement upon their 2PA spectra. Additionally, the 2PA spectrum of a solid-state single crystal made from a Donor-[pi]-Acceptor dye is measured, and the anisotropic nonlinearity is studied with respect to different incident polarizations. These studies further advance our understanding towards an ultimate goal to a predictive capability for the 2PA properties of organic molecules. The NLR study on molecules is focused on the temporal and spectral dispersion of the nonlinear refraction index, n2, of the molecules. Complicated physical mechanisms, originating from either electronic transitions or nuclei movement, are introduced in general. By adopting a prism compressor / stretcher to control the pulsewidth, an evolution of n2 with respect to incident pulsewidth is measured on a simple inorganic molecule--carbon disulfide (CS2) in neat liquid at 700 nm and 1064 nm to demonstrate the pulsewidth dependent nonlinear refraction. The n2 spectra of CS2 and certain organic molecules are measured by femtosecond pulses, which are then analyzed by a 3-level model, a simplified "Sum-over-states" quantum mechanical model. These studies can serve as a precursor for future NLR investigations.

Book excerpt: Nonlinear Optical Properties of Organic Molecules and Crystals, Volume 2 deals with the nonlinear optical properties of organic molecules and crystals, with emphasis on cubic nonlinear optical effects and and the intermolecular bond. Topics covered include the basic structural and electronic properties of polydiacetylenes; cubic effects in polydiacetylene solutions and films; and degenerate third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility of polydiacetylenes. Dimensionality effects and scaling laws in nonlinear optical susceptibilities are also considered. This volume is comprised of seven chapters divided into two sections and begins with a discussion on the basic structural and electronic properties of polydiacetylenes as well as their methods of preparation. Cubic nonlinearities in polydiacetylene solutions and films are then examined, paying particular attention to polarization in one-dimensional media; multiple reflections of fundamental and harmonic waves; and harmonic generation in an absorbing medium. The following chapters focus on degenerate third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility of polydiacetylenes; dimensionality effects and scaling laws in nonlinear optical susceptibilities; polarizabilities and hyperpolarizabilities of long molecules; and resonant molecular optics. The final chapter analyzes the nonlinear optics of a wide range of compounds that are held together by intermolecular bonding and form supramolecular assemblies. This monograph will be a useful resource for physicists, physical and organic chemists, and those in the field of quantum electronics.
