The book examines how particular ecosystem components come to be understood as natural resources and how these resources in turn are used to organize life in Canada. In tracing transitions from "ecosystem component" to "resource," this book weaves together the roles that commodification, Indigenous dispossession, and especially a false nature-society binary play in facilitating the conceptual and material construction of resources. Alice Cohen and Andrew Biro present an alternative to this false nature-society binary: one that sees Canadians and their environments in a constant process of making and remaking each other. Through a series of case studies focused on specific resources – fish, forests, carbon, water, land, and life – the book explores six channels through which this remaking occurs: governments, communities, built environments, culture and ideas, economies, and bodies and identities. Ultimately, Organizing Nature encourages readers to think critically about what is at stake when Canadians (re)produce myths about the false separation between Canadian peoples and their environments.

Fortunately this enabled us to incorporate new important results that had just been obtained. The ASSOM (Adaptive-Subspace SOM) is a new architecture in which invariant-feature detectors emerge in an unsupervised learning process. Its basic principle was already introduced in the first edition, but the motiva tion and theoretical discussion in the second edition is more thorough and consequent. New material has been added to Sect. 5.9 and this section has been rewritten totally. Correspondingly, Sect. 1.4, which deals with adaptive subspace classifiers in general and constitutes the prerequisite for the ASSOM principle, has also been extended and rewritten totally. Another new SOM development is the WEBSOM, a two-layer architecture intended for the organization of very large collections of full-text documents such as those found in the Internet and World Wide Web. This architecture was published after the first edition came out. The idea and results seemed to be so important that the new Sect. 7.8 has now been added to the second edition. Another addition that contains new results is Sect. 3.15, which describes the acceleration in the computing of very large SOMs. It was also felt that Chap. 7, which deals with 80M applications, had to be extended.

During deployment, armies are confronted with dangers, cunning enemies, unexpected changes, and a general level of uncertainty. The obvious implication is that armies need to be able to deal with complexity, or dynamic complexity as it will be labelled in this book. This study develops an analytical framework that is composed of different ingredients of formal theory. Central to this framework is the idea that the ability to 'doubt' is of crucial importance for organisations that are confronted with dynamic complexity. From this it follows that organisations need to organise their ability to doubt in such environments. The framework is used to analyse the way military units of the Dutch Armed Forces, when deployed to perform peace operations, dealt with dynamic complexity. Subsequently, it is analysed how specific organisational characteristics of the mother organisation in the Netherlands influenced the ability of the deployed units to organise doubt.
